Her hair was loose, her sunglasses were crooked, and one hand was lifted as though she had been caught in the middle of telling a joke.

In the other, Margot stood between Emmett and Claire.

Three generations of photographs.

Three different versions of a family.

Margot grew up beneath them.

She saw her mother's face every morning when she came downstairs.

She saw her own face changing in the mirror.

And she saw Claire become something she had not been on that wedding day.

Not her mother.

Not a replacement.

Something different.

A trusted adult.

A woman who remembered how Margot liked her pancakes.

A woman who attended school performances and clapped too loudly.

A woman who knew that Margot hated having her hair brushed but loved having it braided.

Their relationship developed slowly.

There were no grand declarations.

No dramatic moment when Margot suddenly decided Claire was family.

It happened in dozens of ordinary ways.

Claire remembered to bring strawberry yogurt when Margot stayed over.

She kept spare pajamas in a drawer.

She learned that Margot needed ten quiet minutes after school before answering questions.

She never again asked Margot to prove where her loyalty belonged.

And she stopped flinching whenever Phoebe's name came up.

That mattered more than anything.

Emmett changed too.

He became more attentive.

Not perfect.

Nobody becomes perfect because of one difficult day.

But he learned to notice the little things.

When Margot went quiet, he asked why.

When Claire looked uncomfortable, he asked what was wrong.

When family decisions were being made, he remembered that Margot was part of the family rather than someone being accommodated by it.

For several years, everything seemed to settle.

Then, on an ordinary Saturday afternoon, Margot found the old photograph.

She was helping me clean out a cabinet in the hallway.

The cabinet had belonged to Phoebe.

I had avoided opening some of its drawers for years.

Not because they contained anything terrible.

They simply contained too much.

Old receipts.

Letters.

Birthday cards.

A pair of earrings.

A movie ticket from a date Phoebe had once gone on with Emmett.

A tiny hospital bracelet from the day Margot was born.

Margot pulled open the bottom drawer.

“What’s this?”

I looked over.

She was holding a small envelope.

“Put that back.”

She frowned.

“Why?”

“Because it belongs to your mother.”

That made her more curious.

“What is it?”

I walked over.

The envelope was yellowed with age.

Inside was a photograph.

I recognized it immediately.

Phoebe was sitting on a porch step.

She was pregnant.

Very pregnant.

She was laughing at something outside the frame.

Beside her stood Emmett.

His hand rested on her shoulder.

Margot stared at the picture.

“That’s Mommy?”

“Yes.”

“She looks different.”

“She was twenty-five.”

Margot studied the photograph.

“Was I in her belly?”

“Yes.”

She touched the photograph carefully.

“I wish I remembered her.”

I sat beside her.

“So do I.”

Margot looked at me.

“You remember everything?”

“No.”

She seemed surprised.

“I thought you did.”

“Memory doesn't work that way.”

“What do you remember?”

I smiled.

“I remember she hated tomatoes.”

Margot laughed.

“You hate tomatoes too.”

“I learned from her.”

She looked back at the picture.

Then her expression changed.

“Why is there another picture behind it?”

I froze.

There was a second photograph inside the envelope.

I had never seen it.

Margot pulled it out.

It showed Phoebe standing outside a hospital.

She was holding a newborn baby.

Margot.

I knew the hospital.

I knew the date.

But there was something written on the back.

Margot turned it over.

“Grandpa?”

“What?”

“There’s writing.”

I took the photograph.

The handwriting was Phoebe's.

I recognized it instantly.

My hands tightened.

“What does it say?”

I read it silently.

Then again.

Margot watched me.

“What does Mommy say?”

I didn't answer immediately.

The message was short.

Only one sentence.

If anything happens to me, please make sure Margot always knows that her father loves her more than anything.

I closed my eyes.

Phoebe had written it before Margot was born.

I remembered the pregnancy.

I remembered the fear.

There had been complications.

Phoebe had laughed them off.

She had told me not to worry.

But apparently, some part of her had worried.

Margot was watching me.

“Why did she write that?”

I folded the photograph carefully.

“She was afraid.”

“Of what?”

“I don't know.”

That was the honest answer.

Or at least, part of it.

The photograph brought back memories I had not examined in years.

Phoebe had been unusually serious during the last month of her pregnancy.

She had asked me strange questions.

Whether I would always stay close to Emmett.

Whether I would help him if something happened.

Whether I would make sure Margot knew about her.

At the time, I had told her to stop talking nonsense.

Now I wondered whether I had been too quick to dismiss her fear.

Margot touched my arm.

“Grandpa?”

“Yes?”

“Did Mommy know she might die?”

I looked at her.

“I don't think she knew.”

“But she was scared.”

“She was preparing for possibilities.”

Margot looked down.

“Did Daddy know?”

“I don't think so.”

She was quiet.

Then she asked, “Should we tell him?”

I considered it.

“Yes.”

That evening, Emmett came over.

Claire came with him.

Margot was sitting at the kitchen table.

The photograph lay in front of her.

Emmett saw it.

His face changed.

“Where did you get that?”

“I found it in Mom's cabinet,” Margot said.

Emmett picked it up.

He read the writing.

His eyes moved across the sentence.

Then he sat down.

For a long time, he said nothing.

Claire stood behind him.

I watched my son hold the photograph with both hands.

“I didn't know.”

“I didn't either.”

He looked at me.

“Why didn't she tell me?”

“I don't know.”

He turned the photograph over again.

“She was worried about me.”

“She was worried about Margot.”

He swallowed.

“She knew.”

“What?”

“That I would always love her.”

He looked toward Margot.

“I hope she knew that.”

Margot stood.

“Daddy?”

He looked up.

“I know you love me.”

His face broke.

He reached for her.

She climbed into his arms.

Claire turned away.

I looked toward the hallway.

The two photographs were still hanging beside each other.

And for the first time, I wondered whether there were other things Phoebe had left behind.

Things none of us had found.

Things she had never managed to say.

That thought stayed with me.

It would not leave.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: The Envelope Hidden Beneath My Daughter’s Old
