7 – The Letter Was Supposed to Stay Locked Until Margot Turned Eighteen, But an Unexpected Question Forced Me to Reconsider

The following months were peaceful.

Almost too peaceful.

Margot went back to school.

Claire returned to work.

Emmett became absorbed in a new project.

Life moved forward.

That is what life does.

It refuses to remain dramatic simply because something important happened.

Sometimes the most meaningful changes happen while nobody is watching.

Claire began spending more time with Margot.

They developed their own traditions.

Saturday pancakes.

Tuesday library trips.

A ridiculous annual competition to see who could build the tallest gingerbread house.

Claire always lost.

Margot never let her forget it.

One evening, Margot asked me why Claire was not her stepmother.

I looked at her.

“Who told you that?”

“No one.”

“Then why are you asking?”

“Because people at school call her that.”

I thought for a moment.

“Do you want her to be?”

Margot shrugged.

“I don't know.”

“That's okay.”

“She loves Daddy.”

“Yes.”

“She loves me.”

“Yes.”

“Does that make her my stepmother?”

“Labels don't decide relationships.”

Margot frowned.

“Then what does?”

“What people do.”

She thought about that.

“I think she's family.”

I smiled.

“That sounds right.”

The subject disappeared.

For a while.

Then came the school assignment.

Every student had to bring in a photograph of someone important and explain why that person mattered.

Margot chose Phoebe.

She brought the picture of her mother holding her as a newborn.

Her teacher asked whether she wanted to write about her mother.

Margot said yes.

The assignment came home on a Thursday.

I read it at the kitchen table.

My daughter had been described in eight-year-old handwriting.

My mother was named Phoebe.

She died when I was little.

I don't remember her voice but my family tells me she laughed loudly.

She liked strawberries and hated tomatoes.

She loved my dad.

She loved me.

Then came a sentence that made me stop.

I think she would like my family now.

I looked at Margot.

“You wrote this?”

She nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Claire is in my family.”

I smiled.

“That’s true.”

Margot pointed at the paper.

“But I don't know if Mommy would like everything.”

I looked at her carefully.

“What do you mean?”

“I don't know.”

She pushed the paper away.

Then she asked, “Grandpa, what if Mommy was unhappy before she died?”

I felt the room grow colder.

“Why would you think that?”

“Because adults always say she was happy.”

“That doesn't mean she was never scared.”

“Did she have secrets?”

I hesitated.

“Yes.”

“Like the letter?”

“Yes.”

“What if the letter says she didn't want me?”

The question broke something inside me.

I reached across the table.

“Margot.”

She looked at me.

“Your mother wanted you.”

“How do you know?”

“Because I knew her.”

“But what if she changed her mind?”

“She didn't.”

“You don't know.”

“I do.”

She looked down.

I realized then that the sealed letter had become something larger in her imagination.

A mystery.

And mysteries can frighten children.

Especially when the mystery involves a parent they never knew.

I called Emmett.

He came over.

We sat with Margot.

He took her hand.

“Your mother loved you.”

“How do you know?”

“Because I saw it.”

“Before I was born?”

“Yes.”

“She wrote Grandpa a letter.”

“Yes.”

“And one for me.”

“Yes.”

“What if she doesn't want me to read it?”

Emmett looked at me.

Then at Margot.

“She wanted you to read it.”

“Then why wait?”

“Because she believed you would understand it better when you were older.”

Margot frowned.

“I'm already eight.”

“I know.”

“That's old.”

Emmett smiled.

“It feels old to you.”

Margot crossed her arms.

“I can understand things.”

“I know you can.”

“Then can I read it?”

I looked at Emmett.

He looked at me.

We had made a promise to Phoebe.

But Phoebe had also written the letter for her daughter.

Not for some future adult version of Margot.

For Margot herself.

The question was whether eight was too young.

I did not know.

That night, after Margot went to bed, Emmett and I talked.

“I don't want to break Mom's promise,” he said.

“Neither do I.”

“But I don't want the letter becoming something she fears.”

I nodded.

“That is the problem.”

“What would you do?”

I looked at the locked box.

“I would keep the promise.”

He sighed.

“I think so too.”

We agreed.

But the next morning, Claire came to me.

She had heard part of the conversation.

“I think you should read it.”

I looked at her.

“You do?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Margot isn't asking for gossip.”

I said nothing.

“She is asking whether her mother loved her.”

“She knows.”

“She knows what we tell her.”

Claire paused.

“But she wants something from Phoebe herself.”

That was true.

I looked toward the window.

“I don't want to betray Phoebe.”

“Then don't.”

“How?”

“Read it first.”

I stared at her.

“It's sealed.”

“You can open it.”

I shook my head.

“I promised.”

Claire sat down.

“What if the promise was never meant to be a punishment?”

“What do you mean?”

“What if Phoebe only wanted Margot to read it when she was capable of understanding it?”

I thought about that.

“She may already be.”

“She is eight.”

“I know.”

“But she understands love.”

I looked at Claire.

“She understands loss too.”

That afternoon, I took the box out.

I stared at the envelope.

Margot's name was still there.

The ink had faded slightly.

I almost opened it.

Then I stopped.

Not because I believed Margot was incapable of understanding.

Because I realized the letter was not mine.

It belonged to her.

I called Emmett.

“We're waiting.”

He understood.

“All right.”

“But we're going to tell her that the letter exists.”

“We already did.”

“No.”

I meant something different.

“We're going to tell her that it contains her mother's words for her.”

He was quiet.

“That might help.”

“It might.”

That evening, we told Margot.

She listened.

“Mommy wrote it for me?”

“Yes.”

“Only me?”

“Yes.”

“Then I want to wait.”

I blinked.

“You do?”

She nodded.

“I want to read it when I'm eighteen.”

“Why?”

“Because Mommy said so.”

I looked at Emmett.

He smiled.

Margot returned to her drawing.

I felt something release inside me.

The mystery remained.

But the fear had disappeared.

She no longer imagined the letter as a threat.

She imagined it as a gift waiting for her.

And that changed everything.

Years passed.

Margot grew.

Nine.

Ten.

Eleven.

Twelve.

The letter remained locked away.

Claire kept her promise.

Emmett kept his.

I kept mine.

Sometimes Margot asked about it.

Sometimes she didn't.

By fourteen, she stopped asking.

By fifteen, she barely mentioned it.

At sixteen, she found the photograph again.

She held it for a long time.

Then she asked me something unexpected.

“Grandpa, do you think Mommy was afraid of dying?”

I answered honestly.

“Yes.”

“Were you?”

“Yes.”

“Daddy?”

“Yes.”

“Claire?”

“I don't know.”

Margot nodded.

Then she said, “I'm not afraid anymore.”

“Of what?”

“Of reading what she wrote.”

She looked toward the locked cabinet.

“I think I'm ready.”

I knew immediately.

The promise was about to end.

And whatever Phoebe had written would finally become part of Margot's life.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: At Sixteen, Margot Asked for the Letter Her Mother Had Hidden Away, and What
