at me.

“She told me she was jealous of Mommy.”

I considered that.

“That sounds painful.”

“For Claire?”

“For everyone.”

Margot nodded.

“She said she hated feeling like she was walking into a family where someone else had already been loved.”

“That was how she felt.”

“Yes.”

“She also said she was ashamed.”

“Why?”

“Because she took that feeling out on me.”

Margot was quiet.

Then she said, “I think I understand.”

“You don't have to.”

“I do.”

She looked toward the street.

“People can be afraid and still hurt someone.”

“Yes.”

“And being afraid doesn't make the hurt okay.”

“No.”

“But it can explain it.”

“Yes.”

Margot smiled faintly.

“That's what Mommy meant.”

I looked at her.

“How?”

“She said people me the truth.”

“That matters.”

“She never pretends she was right.”

I nodded.

“She tells me she was wrong.”

“That matters even more.”

Margot looked at me.

“Did you hate her?”

I was silent.

It was an honest question.

“Yes.”

She looked surprised.

“For a little while?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because you were crying.”

Margot nodded.

“I understand.”

“I wanted someone to blame.”

“Did you blame Mommy?”

“No.”

“Daddy?”

“No.”

“Claire?”

“Yes.”

I looked at her.

“But I learned that blame isn't the same as accountability.”

“What does that mean?”

“Blame asks who deserves pain.”

I paused.

“Accountability asks what needs to change.”

Margot thought about it.

“I like that.”

“So do I.”

She smiled.

Then she said, “I don't hate Claire.”

“I know.”

“I love her.”

“I know.”

“Is that strange?”

“No.”

“Even though she hurt me?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because love is not an award for perfect behavior.”

Margot laughed.

“That sounds like something you would say.”

“It is.”

She leaned her head against my shoulder.

“I’m glad you didn't make me choose.”

I looked toward her.

“Between what?”

“Between Mommy and Claire.”

I swallowed.

“Neither of them ever needed you to choose.”

“I know.”

She was quiet.

Then she said, “I think that was the real problem at the wedding.”

“What?”

“Claire thought I had to choose.”

“Yes.”

“And you knew I didn't.”

“Yes.”

Margot looked at me.

“So you spoke.”

“I did.”

“And that changed everything.”

“Not everything.”

She smiled.

“Enough.”

The months passed quickly.

Margot prepared for college.

Emmett became unbearable.

He checked travel plans six times.

Claire bought things Margot didn't need.

I gave her practical advice.

“Learn how to cook three meals.”

“I can cook.”

“Three meals.”

“I can make pasta.”

“Pasta counts as one.”

“What are the other two?”

“Eggs.”

“That is not a meal.”

“It is if you're hungry.”

She laughed.

Then she hugged me.

“You're ridiculous.”

“I'm experienced.”

The night before she left, the family gathered in the hallway.

The three photographs were still there.

The copy of Phoebe's letter remained beneath them.

Margot stood in front of the display.

She looked at it for a long time.

Then she said, “I want to change one thing.”

Emmett looked concerned.

“What?”

“I want to add one more photograph.”

She held up her phone.

It was a picture of the four of us.

Emmett.

Claire.

Margot.

Me.

It had been taken that summer at a lake.

Nobody looked perfect.

Everyone was sunburned.

Margot was laughing.

Claire was holding a towel.

Emmett was squinting.

I was carrying too much food.

Margot wanted that photograph beside the others.

She framed it.

Then she placed it at the end.

Phoebe.

The wedding.

Margot.

The family.

I understood.

She wasn't rewriting history.

She was showing what history had become.

Claire stood beside her.

“Are you sure?”

Margot nodded.

“Absolutely.”

Claire looked at Phoebe's photograph.

“I wish I could have known her.”

Margot smiled.

“You know her a little.”

“How?”

“Through me.”

Claire's eyes filled.

“That is the nicest thing you've ever said to me.”

“I know.”

Everyone laughed.

Later that night, Emmett and I sat outside.

“She’s ready,” he said.

“She is.”

“I don't know if I am.”

“You don't have to be.”

He smiled.

“Dad?”

“Yes?”

“Do you ever wish you hadn't made that speech?”

I thought about it.

“No.”

“Not even once?”

“No.”

“Even knowing how close we came to losing everything?”

“That speech didn't almost destroy the family.”

“What did?”

“The choice to hurt a child.”

He nodded.

“And the choice to repair it saved us.”

“Yes.”

He looked toward the house.

“Claire changed.”

“She did.”

“So did I.”

“Yes.”

“I think Margot changed most.”

I smiled.

“She stopped asking whether she belonged.”

He nodded.

“That was always the point.”

The next morning, we drove Margot to college.

She cried when she hugged Claire.

She cried when she hugged Emmett.

She tried not to cry when she hugged me.

It didn't work.

“Call me,” I told her.

“I will.”

“Eat properly.”

“I will.”

“Don't trust people who hate breakfast.”

She laughed.

“Okay.”

Then she got into the car.

Before leaving, she rolled down the window.

“Grandpa!”

“Yes?”

“I know where I belong.”

I smiled.

“Good.”

The car drove away.

I stood beside Claire and Emmett.

The driveway became empty.

Claire wiped her face.

“I miss her already.”

“So do I.”

Emmett put an arm around both of us.

For once, nobody said anything.

There was nothing left to explain.

Click here to continue reading: PART 12: On the Day Margot Became a Mother Herself, She Finally Understood Why Her
