Around her, twenty people were cheering, someone was clapping too loudly, and my sister had already started shouting that she was going to buy the baby a ridiculous collection of pink clothes. Then Chloe lifted the first piece from the cake, saw the bright pink filling, and began to cry. Not the laughing, relieved tears I had expected. These were slow, frightened tears that seemed to surprise even her.

For four years, I had watched my daughter learn how to protect herself from hope. She had endured two miscarriages and three unsuccessful fertility treatments, and every time another attempt failed, a little more of the carefree woman I remembered disappeared. When she finally called me one morning and said the pregnancy test was positive, she sounded almost apologetic about being happy.

“I’m pregnant,” she had whispered.

I had gripped the edge of my kitchen counter.

“Are you sure?”

She laughed softly, but there was no confidence in it. “The doctor says everything looks good.”

I remember closing my eyes for a moment before answering. I wanted to scream with happiness, but I knew better. Chloe had spent too many years watching joy turn into grief. So I simply told her that I loved her and that this time, we would take every day as it came.

She chose a small gender-reveal gathering instead of anything elaborate. My backyard was large enough for family and a few close friends, and she wanted the afternoon to feel ordinary. No rented hall. No photographer. No enormous decorations. Just food, people she trusted, and a white cake hiding either pink or blue inside.

Only the bakery was supposed to know the result.

The sealed envelope from the clinic had been taken to Sweet Delights Bakery, where the baker, Nora, was instructed not to tell anyone whether the baby was a boy or a girl. Chloe had joked about the secrecy while we prepared the backyard.

“It feels ridiculous,” she said, arranging paper plates beneath the patio cover. “They probably guard that envelope like it’s classified information.”

“After everything you’ve been through, I think you’ve earned a little suspense.”

She smiled at me then, and that smile had stayed with me for days.

Her husband, Spencer, seemed excited too. At least, that was what I believed. He moved chairs, carried coolers, checked the grill, and kept asking whether I needed help with anything. Every so often, I caught him watching Chloe. At the time, I interpreted his expression as tenderness.

Now I wonder how many things we mistake for love simply because we desperately want them to be love.

Nora arrived shortly before noon carrying the cake in both hands. She was a petite woman with dark hair twisted into a loose knot and a streak of flour across one sleeve. She apologized for being a few minutes early and asked where we wanted the cake placed.

I led her beneath the patio canopy.

The cake was beautiful without being extravagant. White frosting covered every inch, with thin decorative piping around the edges and tiny sugar flowers scattered across the top. There was no clue about what waited inside.

Nora set the box down and glanced toward the house.

“Everything should be ready,” she said.

“Thank you. Chloe is going to love it.”

Nora gave me a brief smile, but something about her expression seemed distracted. I assumed she was tired. She had probably spent the morning baking half the town’s weekend orders. I thanked her again, and she left.

The afternoon passed almost normally.

Children chased each other across the lawn. My brother-in-law argued with my sister about whether the grill needed more charcoal. Chloe sat beneath the shade with one hand resting over her stomach while friends asked about names. Spencer stayed close to her, occasionally touching her shoulder or whispering something that made her nod.

I noticed, however, that Chloe seemed quieter whenever he spoke.

At the time, I told myself it was exhaustion.

When the moment finally came, everyone crowded around the table. Chloe laughed nervously as Spencer handed her the knife. Her fingers were trembling.

“You don’t have to do it slowly,” he teased.

“I know. I’m just trying not to destroy the whole cake.”

“You could drop it on the ground and nobody would care.”

“I would care.”

That made everyone laugh.

Then she cut.

The knife passed through the white frosting, then the soft layers beneath it. Chloe made a second cut and carefully slid the server under the slice. Everyone leaned closer.

She lifted it.

Pink.

For one second, the yard exploded.

“A girl!”

“Oh my gosh!”

“Congratulations!”

My sister threw both arms into the air. Someone started taking photographs. Chloe’s closest friend covered her mouth and began crying. Spencer stepped forward and wrapped his arms around Chloe from behind.

“We’re having a little girl,” he whispered.

Chloe stared at the cake.

Her face had gone pale.

Then a tear slid down her cheek.

Another followed.

Spencer tightened his arms around her.

“Hey,” he murmured. “It’s okay.”

Chloe didn’t answer.

People began interpreting her tears for her.

“She’s overwhelmed.”

“After all those years, I don’t blame her.”

“This is the moment she dreamed about.”

I wanted to believe them.

But I knew my daughter.

There was nothing joyful in the way she was staring at that pink filling. Her lips had parted slightly, and her fingers had tightened around the knife handle until her knuckles were white.

She looked less like a woman receiving wonderful news than someone watching a terrible prediction come true.

I started toward her.

Then I noticed Nora.

The baker was standing beside the gate.

She shouldn’t have been there.

She had delivered the cake hours earlier, and I had assumed she left. Yet now she stood rigidly near her delivery van, staring across the yard. Her eyes weren’t on Chloe.

They were fixed on Spencer.

When she caught me looking at her, she raised one hand.

Come here.

I hesitated.

She repeated the gesture, more urgently this time.

I excused myself from the group and walked across the grass.

“Is something wrong?” I asked.

Nora glanced toward the guests.

“Can we talk somewhere private?”

My stomach tightened.

“What happened?”

“I don’t know how to explain this without making everything worse.”

“That isn’t reassuring.”

She looked toward Chloe again.

“I came back because I couldn’t leave it alone.”

“What?”

Nora pulled her phone from her apron pocket.

“This morning, Spencer came to the bakery.”

For a moment, I simply stared at her.

“Why?”

“He said there had been an error with the medical envelope.”

My first reaction was confusion.

“An error?”

Nora nodded.

“He brought another sealed envelope. He said the clinic had contacted him and told him the original result was incorrect.”

I glanced over my shoulder.

Spencer was still beside Chloe.

“Did you believe him?”

“No.”

Her answer came immediately.

“Then why did you use the second result?”

“Because he wasn’t alone.”

I looked at her.

Nora unlocked her phone.

“There was a woman with him.”

The screen showed security footage from inside the bakery. Spencer stood at the counter, unmistakable even through the grainy image. Beside him was a woman I had never seen before.
