He arrived when he said he would. He called when he was running late. He sent Chloe medical updates about his daughter when they affected both children.

He never asked Chloe to reconsider the divorce.

That mattered.

He understood that remorse did not create entitlement.

His daughter, meanwhile, had become a familiar presence in Chloe's home.

She came over on weekends.

She played with blocks on the living-room floor.

She sat beside Chloe while the baby crawled around her.

She called Chloe by her first name.

Never Mom.

Chloe never encouraged anything different.

Their relationship developed naturally.

One afternoon, the girl brought a drawing.

“This is for you.”

Chloe took it.

There were four people holding hands beneath a yellow sun.

“This is beautiful.”

“This is us.”

Chloe pointed.

“Who's this?”

“Daddy.”

“And this?”

“Me.”

She pointed to the smaller figure.

“Your brother.”

“And who's this?”

The girl looked at Chloe.

“You.”

Chloe smiled.

“You put me in the picture.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

The girl shrugged.

“Because you're there.”

Simple.

Matter-of-fact.

Chloe folded the drawing carefully and placed it on the refrigerator.

That evening, Spencer noticed it.

He stood in front of it for a long time.

“You don't have to keep that,” he said.

“I know.”

“Thank you.”

Chloe looked at him.

“Don't make it about you.”

He nodded.

“I'll try.”

She smiled slightly.

“You really need to stop saying that.”

He laughed.

“I'll work on it.”

For a moment, the house felt almost normal.

Then the phone rang.

It was Spencer's attorney.

He stepped into the hallway to answer.

Chloe continued cleaning the kitchen.

She heard only one sentence.

“She found the account?”

Chloe stopped.

Spencer lowered his voice.

“No. That isn't possible.”

Her hand remained on the countertop.

The conversation lasted another minute.

When Spencer returned, Chloe was waiting.

“What account?”

His face tightened.

“What?”

“I heard you.”

He looked uncomfortable.

“It's nothing.”

She stared at him.

“Don't.”

He exhaled.

“There was an old savings account.”

“For what?”

“For my daughter.”

Chloe waited.

“Then why were you surprised that she found it?”

“Because Vanessa wasn't supposed to know about it.”

“What was in it?”

He hesitated.

“Money.”

“That doesn't answer the question.”

“It was money I'd set aside before we got married.”

“For your daughter?”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

He told her.

It was substantial.

Chloe stared at him.

“You hid that too?”

“I didn't hide it from you.”

“You never told me.”

“It wasn't your money.”

“That isn't the point.”

She looked toward the hallway.

“Was it connected to our finances?”

“No.”

“Did any of our money go into it?”

“No.”

“Then I don't care about the account.”

Spencer looked relieved.

“But I care that you still have secrets.”

His relief disappeared.

“I know.”

“Is there anything else?”

He didn't answer.

Chloe's expression hardened.

“Spencer.”

“There is one thing.”

She closed her eyes.

Of course there was.

“What?”

He sat down.

“When Vanessa and I separated, she asked me to sign a document.”

“What kind?”

“A parental agreement.”

“And?”

“I signed it.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“I didn't think it mattered anymore.”

“What did it say?”

“That I would provide financial support.”

“That sounds reasonable.”

“There was another clause.”

Chloe waited.

“It gave her sole decision-making authority.”

“Over your daughter?”

“Yes.”

“And you agreed?”

“I was trying to avoid a custody fight.”

Chloe understood.

He had chosen avoidance again.

“What changed?”

“Vanessa now wants shared legal custody.”

“Does that affect you?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because she says I have become more involved.”

Chloe looked at him.

“You are her father.”

“I know.”

“And you want more involvement?”

“Yes.”

“Then fight for it honestly.”

He stared at her.

“You think I should?”

“I think you should decide what kind of father you want to be.”

He nodded.

“Thank you.”

“Don't thank me.”

She turned away.

“Just don't make your daughter pay for another adult's fear.”

He sat silently.

Later that week, Vanessa came over.

She and Chloe sat at the kitchen table while the children played in the next room.

“I heard you told Spencer to pursue custody,” Vanessa said.

“I told him to be honest about what he wants.”

“That means the same thing.”

“Maybe.”

Vanessa looked nervous.

“I don't want to fight him.”

“Then don't.”

“She deserves stability.”

“She does.”

“I thought keeping sole custody was stability.”

“It may have been at first.”

Vanessa looked down.

“But things have changed.”

“Yes.”

“She's attached to him now.”

“She should be.”

Vanessa nodded.

“I was afraid that if I let him become important to her, he would eventually leave.”

Chloe understood that fear.

She also recognized it.

“That's what Spencer was afraid of too.”

Vanessa looked at her.

“You really think we're alike?”

“In some ways.”

“That's uncomfortable.”

“Truth usually is.”

Vanessa laughed softly.

The children ran into the kitchen.

The little girl carried a toy rabbit.

The boy followed behind her, unsteady on his feet.

“Look!”

She held up the rabbit.

“Your brother gave it to me.”

Chloe smiled.

“He did?”

“He picked it up.”

The boy babbled.

His sister laughed.

For a moment, the adults simply watched them.

Two children connected by circumstances none of them had chosen.

Chloe thought about the photograph beneath the cake.

How angry she had been.

How frightened.

How certain that the appearance of another child meant her own family had been stolen.

Now she understood that the real theft had been information.

The children had never been enemies.

The adults had made the world complicated around them.

That evening, after Vanessa left, Chloe found a box in the back of a closet.

Inside were photographs from her marriage.

Wedding pictures.

Their first apartment.

Their first Christmas.

A photograph of Spencer asleep on the sofa with a book across his chest.

A photograph of Chloe laughing at something outside the frame.

She sat on the floor and looked through them.

She didn't cry.

That surprised her.

For a long time, she had thought healing meant forgetting.

Now she understood it could also mean remembering without wanting the past back.

At the bottom of the box was a photograph she had never seen.

Spencer and Vanessa stood beside a hospital bed.

The baby was only hours old.

Spencer looked terrified.

Vanessa looked exhausted.

Chloe turned the photograph over.

There was a date.

Three years before Chloe's wedding.

She stared at it.

Something felt wrong.

The date was not the date Spencer had given her.

He had always said he learned about the pregnancy after the relationship ended.

But this photograph showed him at the hospital when the child was born.

He hadn't merely known.

He had been there.

Chloe's pulse quickened.

She searched the box again.

There was another photograph.

This one showed Spencer holding the newborn.

On the back, Vanessa had written a sentence.

YOU SAID SHE WOULD NEVER BE A SECRET AGAIN.

Chloe read it twice.

Then a third time.

She called Spencer.

He answered immediately.

“What's wrong?”

“I found a photograph.”

Silence.

“Which one?”

“You know which one.”

Another silence.

“You were at the hospital.”

“Yes.”

“You told me you weren't.”

“I know.”

“Why?”

He didn't answer.

“Spencer.”

His voice finally came.

“I thought I could explain.”

“You've had years.”

“I know.”

“No more explanations later.”

Chloe looked at the photograph.

“Come here.”

He arrived twenty minutes later.

She placed the picture on the table.

He stared at it.

“I forgot that existed.”

“No.”

His eyes lifted.

“You didn't forget.”

He looked away.

“You were there when she was born.”

“Yes.”

“You told me you didn't know until afterward.”

“I was scared.”

“Of what?”

“That if I admitted how involved I was, you'd eventually find out about everything else.”

Chloe felt something inside her go cold.

“So even before our wedding, you were already practicing how to hide things.”

He nodded.

“I suppose I was.”

She pushed the photograph toward him.

“What else don't I know?”

He looked at her.

“I don't know.”

Chloe stood.

“That answer isn't acceptable anymore.”

He swallowed.

“There is one last thing.”

She waited.

“When I told Vanessa I would never let our daughter be a secret, I meant it.”

“Then why did you make her one?”

“Because I was afraid.”

Chloe shook her head.

“You've used that word for years.”

She pointed toward the door.

“Go home.”

He left.

Chloe remained at the table.

The photograph lay beneath her hand.

For the first time since the cake, she understood that the story of Spencer's lies had started long before she knew his name.

And she had no idea how far back the truth went.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: The Photograph Forced Chloe to Reopen the Past, and a Forgotten Promise
