newborn.

Arthur had helped her find temporary housing.

He had arranged legal assistance.

He had used money from his father's company to pay hospital expenses.

Then he returned to Ohio.

There had been no affair.

No second child.

Just another person Arthur had helped and another obligation he had carried quietly.

But there was still one question.

Why had the payments continued for twenty-five years?

Daniel answered.

“Because the lawsuit nearly destroyed me.”

Arthur had believed Daniel was being targeted unfairly because of the old family plans.

He helped him fight the case.

Afterward, Daniel started his own company.

Arthur continued occasional payments.

Not because Daniel needed charity.

Because Arthur had promised Ruth he would not abandon her family after the help began.

Margaret sat back.

The pattern was becoming clearer.

Arthur had spent his life turning promises into private obligations.

But he had also used those obligations to justify silence.

That was the part Margaret could not ignore.

“Why didn't he tell me?”

Ruth answered quietly.

“Because he thought you would ask why he was still involved with people from Maine.”

“I would have.”

“He was afraid.”

Margaret laughed once.

It was bitter.

“He was always afraid.”

Daniel looked at Eleanor.

“Your father wasn't a bad man.”

Eleanor's eyes sharpened.

“Don't tell me what he was.”

Daniel nodded.

“You're right.”

Eleanor looked away.

Margaret understood.

The more people defended Arthur, the harder it became to separate love from accountability.

On the drive home, nobody spoke much.

Then Thomas said, “There is something bothering me.”

“What?”

“Dad's final payments.”

Margaret looked at him.

“Daniel was already financially independent by then.”

“Yes.”

“So why did Dad keep paying?”

They stopped at a roadside diner.

Thomas spread the receipts across the table.

The final payments were different.

They were larger.

And the descriptions changed.

Not legal assistance.

Not construction.

Estate preparation.

Eleanor leaned closer.

“What does that mean?”

Thomas shook his head.

“I don't know.”

Margaret studied the dates.

The payments began six months before Arthur entered hospice.

The same period when he had updated his trust.

The same period when he had begun writing the letter to Margaret.

“Maybe he was preparing for death,” she said.

Thomas nodded.

“But why involve Daniel?”

A waitress arrived with coffee.

They waited until she left.

Eleanor suddenly looked up.

“Because Daniel knew the attorney.”

Thomas frowned.

“So?”

“Maybe Dad didn't trust the estate lawyer.”

Margaret thought about it.

“Why?”

“Because the attorney had been involved since 1998.”

Thomas pulled up the old records.

The attorney had represented Arthur in several private matters.

Property.

Trusts.

Medical documents.

Eleanor's eyes moved across the pages.

“There's something missing.”

“What?”

“Dad's will.”

Margaret looked at her.

“The final will should be in the estate file.”

“It is.”

“Then what's missing?”

Eleanor pointed.

“The amendment.”

Thomas searched the folder.

Nothing.

They called the attorney's office.

A receptionist said the file had been transferred to storage.

The attorney himself was retired.

His replacement agreed to send copies.

The package arrived three days later.

Inside was the missing amendment.

Margaret read it once.

Then handed it to Thomas.

He read it.

Then to Eleanor.

Eleanor's hands began shaking.

Arthur had created a separate educational trust.

Not for Eleanor.

Not for Thomas.

For future grandchildren of both families.

The yellow house was only the first part.

He had also set aside funds for the reading room.

And there was one final provision.

If Eleanor and Thomas disagreed about the house, neither could force a sale for twenty years.

Margaret stared at the page.

“He knew you would need time.”

Eleanor looked down.

“Or he knew we might fight.”

Thomas shook his head.

“No.”

He pointed to the signature.

“Look at the date.”

Margaret did.

It was signed three weeks before Arthur entered hospice.

At that time, he had already been sick.

He knew death was approaching.

He had made the trust deliberately.

Then Eleanor noticed something.

“There are two witnesses.”

Thomas read the names.

One was the estate attorney.

The other was Ruth Calder.

Margaret's heart sank.

“Why was Ruth there?”

Nobody knew.

They called her.

She answered after three rings.

When Margaret asked about the trust, Ruth went silent.

Finally she said, “Arthur asked me to witness it.”

“Why?”

“I can't tell you.”

“You can.”

“No.”

Margaret's voice hardened.

“Ruth, my
