only after Margaret and Thomas had been informed.”

Eleanor looked at Margaret.

“Why?”

Michael slid another document across the table.

It was a memorandum Arthur had written.

My family may challenge the yellow house.

If they do, the matter must be settled without revealing Eleanor's identity unless necessary.

Eleanor read it.

Her expression was unreadable.

Michael continued.

“Arthur believed his brother's children would claim the property was part of purchase had been funded partly through the family lumber company.”

Margaret remembered the old receipts.

Arthur had bought the house after returning to Maine.

The money had come from the company.

But there was no clear documentation showing whether it was a personal purchase or a company asset.

Michael opened another folder.

Arthur had spent years gathering evidence.

Canceled checks.

Tax records.

Property assessments.

Letters from his father.

Photographs.

Every piece supported Arthur's position that he had purchased the house personally.

But there was one problem.

The original deed was missing.

Margaret's heart sank.

“Where is it?”

Michael shook his head.

“We don't know.”

Thomas looked at Eleanor.

“So that's what they were after.”

“Yes,” Michael said.

“If they found the deed, they could challenge the property.”

“Potentially.”

“What does the removed another document.

“This is why he created the trust.”

Margaret read the heading.

Property ownership declaration.

Arthur had sworn under oath that the yellow house belonged to him personally.

The document was notarized.

The date was six weeks before his death.

Thomas leaned back.

“He knew.”

“He knew the dispute might come.”

Eleanor looked at the signature.

“Did he win?”

Michael shook his head.

“There was no property.”

Michael closed the folder.

“They haven't yet.”

The drive home was silent.

When they reached Margaret's house, Thomas checked the mailbox.

A letter waited inside.

No return address.

The envelope was addressed to Eleanor.

She opened it carefully.

Inside was a photocopy of a handwritten note.

The handwriting belonged to Arthur.

The yellow house was never meant to become a battleground.

If anyone challenges it, show them the ledger.

Eleanor looked up.

“What ledger?”

Margaret felt the old sensation return.

Another missing object.

Another clue.

Thomas searched the workshop again.

They found nothing.

Then Eleanor remembered the architectural plans.

She unfolded them.

On the reverse side of the final page was a faint pencil notation.

Ledger — mill office, drawer 7.

Thomas stared at it.

“The old lumber company office.”

Margaret looked at him.

“Does it still exist?”

“Part of the building does.”

They drove there the next morning.

The mill had been converted into offices years earlier.

The current owner allowed them into the old records room.

Drawer 7 was locked.

Thomas produced the brass key from the workshop.

It fit.

Inside was a black ledger.

The first pages contained ordinary business records.

Then the entries changed.

1979.

Arthur's personal purchase of the yellow house.

Payment made from personal funds.

Family company reimbursed.

No ownership interest retained.

Margaret read the line twice.

The house had never belonged to the company.

Arthur had purchased it personally.

The ledger was proof.

Eleanor touched the page.

“So this is what Dad meant.”

Thomas nodded.

“Probably.”

But beneath the ledger was another envelope.

Margaret recognized Arthur's handwriting.

For my children.

They opened it together.

My children,

If you are reading this, then someone has questioned what belongs to you.

Remember this:

A house is wood, glass, nails, and paper.

It becomes a home because people decide what happens inside it.

Do not let anyone turn this place into another reason to hate each other.

If my family challenges the property, defend it together.

If they don't, keep it together anyway.

You owe me nothing.

You owe each other honesty.

Eleanor read the final line aloud.

“You owe each other honesty.”

She folded the letter.

For a moment nobody spoke.

Then Thomas smiled.

“He finally got something right.”

Eleanor laughed.

It was quiet, but real.

The legal issue was settled within weeks.

Arthur's brother's children received copies of the ledger and property declaration.

No lawsuit followed.

The yellow house remained with Eleanor and Thomas.

But the emotional dispute did not disappear.

Eleanor still struggled with Arthur's choices.

One evening, she asked Margaret to meet her on the porch.

“I've been thinking.”

“About?”

“Whether I should forgive him.”

Margaret looked at the garden.

“You don't have to.”

“I know.”

She rubbed her thumb over the edge of Arthur's letter.

“But I think I want to.”

Margaret waited.

“Not because what he did was okay.”

“I know.”

“Not because he loved me.”

“I know.”

Eleanor looked toward the house.

“I want to forgive him because I don't want his fear to become something I carry forever.”

Margaret nodded.

“That makes sense.”

“Did you forgive him?”

Margaret thought for a long time.

“I forgave him for being afraid.”

Eleanor looked at her.

“What about lying?”

“No.”

Margaret smiled faintly.

“I still don't like that part.”

Eleanor laughed.

Neither did I.

They sat quietly.

Inside the house, Thomas was arguing with Daniel about a bookshelf.

Evelyn was making tea.

Children were reading in the downstairs room.

The yellow house had become busy.

Alive.

Nothing about it looked like a secret anymore.

Then the front door opened.

Thomas stepped onto the porch.

He was holding a small wooden box.

“I found this in the attic.”

Eleanor looked at him.

“What is it?”

He set it down.

Inside was the wooden rabbit.

Its ear was cracked.

The paint had faded.

Eleanor touched it.

Her face changed.

“I thought it was gone.”

Thomas smiled.

“Apparently Dad wasn't very good at throwing things away.”

She picked up the rabbit.

For several seconds she said nothing.

Then she turned it over.

There was writing on the bottom.

One word.

Eleanor.

She closed her eyes.

Margaret watched her hold the rabbit against her chest.

Arthur had left them evidence everywhere.

Not evidence that he had been perfect.

Evidence that he had remembered.

That difference mattered.

Eleanor looked at the three of them.

“I think I know what I want to do.”

“What?”

She carried the rabbit inside.

“We're putting this in the reading room.”

Thomas frowned.

“Why?”

“Because children should know that adults can make mistakes.”

Margaret smiled.

“And?”

Eleanor looked toward the photograph of Arthur.

“And because I don't want his mistakes to be the only thing we remember.”

That evening, the wooden rabbit went onto a shelf beneath the photograph.

No plaque.

No explanation.

Just a small wooden toy beside a stack of children's books.

For the first time, Eleanor did not need to ask whether Arthur had remembered her.

She knew.

And for the first time, Margaret did not need to pretend that knowing made everything right.

It didn't.

But the truth had finally stopped growing in the dark.

<a
