10 – Samuel Hollis Had Been Missing From Every Family Story, Yet His Name Connected Arthur’s First Departure to the Secret He Took Into His Grave

They found Samuel Hollis in a county archive.

Not a current address.

Not a living person.

A death certificate.

Samuel Hollis had died in 1984.

He had been Arthur's older cousin.

Margaret read the document twice.

“Why did Arthur never mention him?”

Thomas searched the archive database.

There were only a few references.

Samuel had worked for the lumber company.

He had left Maine abruptly in 1979.

He had returned briefly in 1982.

Then he disappeared from the records.

Eleanor looked at the date.

“1979.”

“The year Dad came back for me,” Thomas said.

Margaret nodded.

They contacted the county clerk.

An old file was located.

Inside was a handwritten statement from Arthur.

Samuel knew about the house.

Samuel knew about the company money.

And Samuel had threatened to expose the arrangement unless Arthur paid him.

Margaret felt sick.

“Extortion.”

Thomas read further.

“Dad was being blackmailed.”

Eleanor looked at him.

“By his cousin?”

“Yes.”

The story changed again.

Arthur's silence had not begun simply because he was afraid of losing Margaret.

There had been another man applying pressure.

Someone who knew that Arthur had used personal money to secure the yellow house while keeping his daughter financially protected.

Someone who could have exposed the property arrangement.

Someone who had apparently threatened to tell Margaret that Arthur had returned to Maine without her knowledge.

Eleanor sat down.

“So Dad wasn't only hiding me.”

“No.”

“He was hiding the fact that someone was threatening him.”

“Yes.”

Margaret thought about the years when Arthur sometimes seemed distracted or frightened.

She remembered nights when he had checked the locks twice.

She remembered letters that arrived without return addresses.

She remembered one winter when he had refused to let Thomas play near the workshop.

At the time, she had thought it was ordinary parental caution.

Now those memories looked different.

Thomas found a second document.

Samuel had written to Arthur in 1981.

Pay what you owe or I tell your wife everything.

Margaret closed her eyes.

“What happened to him?”

The answer came from a police report.

Samuel had been arrested in 1983 for fraud.

He had died the following year from an unrelated illness.

The blackmail ended.

But Arthur's fear did not.

Eleanor stared at the report.

“He could have told us.”

“Yes.”

“He could have trusted you.”

Margaret looked at her.

“Yes.”

Eleanor's voice softened.

“But he didn't.”

“No.”

The next document was more troubling.

A private investigator's report.

Arthur had hired someone in 1994.

The investigator had tracked Samuel's former associates.

Why?

The report contained one name.

Gerald Pike.

Thomas recognized it.

“Who's that?”

Margaret shook her head.

“No idea.”

The investigator had written that Pike had been involved in the original property dispute.

He had worked for Samuel.

He had later contacted Arthur.

The final page contained a warning.

Pike believes the yellow house has greater value than the property records indicate.

Margaret looked up.

“The house?”

Thomas nodded.

“Maybe not the building.”

“What else?”

They returned to the mill.

The ledger from drawer seventeen contained old company accounts.

One entry concerned a mineral survey.

Beneath the yellow house.

Eleanor stared.

“What?”

Thomas pointed to the page.

“The property was surveyed for mineral deposits.”

Margaret read the report.

The land beneath the house contained no commercially valuable minerals.

But another survey, conducted decades later, suggested groundwater reserves.

Thomas frowned.

“That isn't worth all this.”

“No,” Margaret said.

There was another notation.

The house sits over an underground spring.

Eleanor looked toward her.

“So?”

Margaret remembered Arthur's letter.

A house is wood, glass, nails, and paper.

It becomes a home because people decide what happens inside it.

Maybe the property had never been valuable because of what was underneath.

Maybe the value was something else.

They found the answer in the final pages of the ledger.

The yellow house sat on land that connected to a public water easement.

The easement had been improperly recorded decades earlier.

If challenged, ownership of the surrounding land could become complicated.

Thomas looked stunned.

“That's why the family wanted it.”

“Possibly.”

“Not because of Eleanor.”

“No.”

“They wanted the land.”

Eleanor folded the ledger.

“And Dad knew.”

The next week, a lawyer representing Arthur's extended family contacted them.

He requested a meeting.

Margaret insisted that everyone attend.

The lawyer was polite.

He did not threaten them.

Instead, he explained that an old development company had recently expressed interest in purchasing several parcels around the yellow house.

“They believe the area can be redeveloped.”

Thomas frowned.

“Into what?”

“Housing.”

Eleanor's expression hardened.

“Then why are they interested in our property?”

“Access.”

Margaret understood.

The yellow house sat at the center of the surrounding parcels.

Without it, the proposed development would be much harder.

The lawyer placed a purchase offer on the table.

It was substantial.

Thomas looked at Eleanor.

She shook her head.

“No.”

The lawyer looked surprised.

“You haven't discussed the amount.”

“We don't need to.”

Margaret watched her daughter.

The word was firm.

Not emotional.

Not impulsive.

Simply final.

After the meeting, Thomas asked Eleanor why she had refused immediately.

“Because Dad spent forty-seven years making sure I could choose.”

She looked at the house.

“I'm not selling the choice he protected.”

Margaret smiled.

But that was not the end.

The development company filed a formal claim challenging the old property boundaries.

Michael Grant returned.

The ledger became evidence.

So did Arthur's declaration.

The case lasted months.

During that time, the reading room remained open.

Children still came.

Books still disappeared into backpacks.

Eleanor still dusted the wooden rabbit.

The legal dispute became background noise.

Then one evening, Michael called.

“We found something.”

“What?”

“The original deed.”

Margaret stood.

“Where?”

“In a storage facility.”

“Whose?”

Michael hesitated.

“Samuel Hollis's.”

The deed had been hidden for decades.

It confirmed everything.

Arthur had purchased the property personally.

The company had no ownership interest.

The boundaries were exactly as Arthur had declared.

The development claim collapsed.

But the discovery raised one final question.

Why had Samuel kept the deed?

Michael had an answer.

Samuel had planned to sell the property himself.

He had stolen the deed from the company records and intended to use it to pressure Arthur.

Arthur had discovered the theft.

That was why he had created the trust.

That was why he had gathered evidence.

That was why he had continued paying legal fees.

And that was why he had been so careful.

The yellow house had never been a secret because of what it contained.

It had been a secret because Arthur believed keeping it secure was the one thing he could do for Eleanor without asking anyone's permission.

The lawsuit ended.

The house was safe.

But Margaret still had one unanswered question.

Why had Arthur never told her about Samuel?

The answer came from the final letter.

Michael handed it to her.

It had been written only weeks before Arthur died.

Margaret,

I know you will eventually find Samuel.

When you do, please understand that I was ashamed.

Not of Eleanor.

Never of her.

I was ashamed that fear made me hide behind silence for so long.

Every year I told myself I would explain.

Every year the explanation became harder.

By the time I understood that truth would be kinder than silence, I had spent too many years protecting a lie.

I cannot undo that.

But perhaps you can.

Tell Eleanor I remembered her.

Tell Thomas I was proud of him.

And tell yourself that our marriage was real, even though I failed to tell you everything.

I loved you.

I was afraid.

Both were true.

Margaret folded the letter.

For the first time, she did not cry.

She simply sat quietly.

Arthur had finally said the words she needed.

Not an excuse.

Not a defense.

An admission.

That was enough.

For now.
