He kept his voice low, as though the walls themselves might be listening. “We need to leave.” I looked toward the road, where the dark vehicle had disappeared behind the trees. “Where?” “Somewhere they can't find us easily.” “Who are they?” He shook his head. “I don't know exactly who was in that car.” “But you know what they want.” He looked at Lily through the window. “They want her.”

I felt the anger rise before the fear could settle. “She's my daughter. Nobody is taking her again.” Michael nodded. “That's why we can't stay here.” His hands were shaking. I had spent eighteen years believing those hands had once closed around mine only because he pitied me. Now I watched them tremble over the possibility of losing Lily, and for the first time I understood how much fear he had carried without letting me see it.

Jake came back outside. “What's happening?” Michael looked at him. “We're leaving.” Jake frowned. “Why?” “Because the people connected to the trust know where we are.” Lily appeared behind him. “Who knows?” Nobody answered immediately. She looked at me. “Mom?” “We're going somewhere safer,” I said. “That's all you need to know right now.” She studied my face, then nodded. She had learned, as I had, that adults sometimes used simple words when the truth was too large to fit inside them.

Thomas arrived less than an hour later. He brought a leather folder and a small black bag. “Your father's old property is still available,” he said. “It's three hours north.” Michael nodded. “The cabin?” “Not exactly a cabin. The house beside the lake.” “Who owns it?” I asked. “The trust.” That answer made me uneasy. “Then anyone searching the trust could find it.” Thomas shook his head. “The property is held under a company your father created years before the trust existed. The connection is buried deeply enough that a routine search won't reveal it.”

We left before dawn. Jake drove my car with Lily beside him. Michael followed in his truck, while Thomas drove separately. I sat in the back seat and watched the city disappear behind us. Lily leaned against the window, her arms folded tightly across her chest. After an hour she finally asked, “Do you think Daniel knows where we are?” I looked at her. “I don't know.” She stared at the passing trees. “He was my father's friend when I was little.” “He wasn't.” “Not the father who raised me.” “I know.”

She looked down at her hands. “Do you hate him?” The question caught me off guard. I thought of the younger woman I had been, the woman who had loved Daniel without understanding what he was doing around her. “I don't know what I feel anymore.” Lily nodded slowly. “That's probably more honest than saying you forgive him.” I smiled sadly. “You've known me for one day.” “I've known about you for eighteen years.” She turned toward the window again. “That's different.”

The house stood beyond a line of pine trees, overlooking a gray lake that seemed to stretch forever. It was smaller than my father's old house, but sturdier. The windows had wooden shutters, and a narrow dock reached into the water. Inside, everything was clean but unused. There were canned foods in the pantry, blankets folded in a chest, and a generator in the garage. My father had prepared it for emergencies long before I knew there was anything to fear.

Thomas walked through each room checking windows and doors. “No cameras that I can see.” Jake looked at him. “That's supposed to make me feel better?” “It's supposed to tell you I checked.” Jake gave him a skeptical look. “Fair enough.” Michael went outside to inspect the vehicles. Then he said, “I didn't know if keeping you ignorant was right. I only knew that every time I came close to telling you, something happened.” “What?” “A letter disappeared. Someone followed Jake from school. Your bank account was accessed. Your father's attorney received threats.” He looked at me. “I was afraid that if I told you everything, you'd confront the wrong person and put yourself in danger.”

“You could have trusted me.” His expression tightened. “You were barely surviving.” “That wasn't your decision to make.” “No,” he said quietly. “It wasn't.” He turned back toward the lake. “I know that now.”

That afternoon, Thomas called an attorney in Boston named Robert Reed. He was an old associate of my father's and had apparently handled part of the trust when it was created. Thomas explained the situation and asked him to meet us. Robert Reed agreed to come the following morning. Before ending the call, he said something that made Thomas's expression change.

“What?” I asked after he hung up.

“He says the trustee appointment may have been altered.”

“By whom?”

“We don't know.”

Michael's face hardened. “Then we shouldn't wait for him here.”

Thomas nodded. “Agreed.”

We spent the evening going through my father's documents. Most were ordinary business records, but several pages referred to the trust. One phrase appeared repeatedly: beneficiary protection. Another appeared only once.

No trustee may transfer control without written consent of the surviving beneficiary.

I read it twice.

“When does control become hers?”

Thomas looked at Lily.

“On her eighteenth birthday.”

Her face went pale.

“How long?”

“Thirty-four days.”

Nobody spoke.

The room seemed suddenly too small.

Lily pushed her chair back. “So that's why they're coming.”

“Yes,” Thomas said.

“Because of the money.”

“Partly.”

She looked at me. “What else?”

Thomas hesitated.

“The trust isn't just about money.”

I waited.

“It contains information.”

“What kind?”

“Your father's business records.
