me.

“The second compartment.”

I remembered the brass key.

I pulled it from my pocket.

“There was another compartment?”

Thomas nodded inside his coat.

He removed a small memory card.

“This.”

I stared.

“What is it?”

“A copy of the hospital security backups.”

“Why?”

“Because he knew what Robert was doing.”

I took the card.

“What does it show?”

Daniel's expression hardened.

“Your overdose.”

I felt cold.

“What about it?”

“It shows someone entering your room before you woke up.”

“Who?”

“Robert.”

Michael stepped closer.

“Are you certain?”

“Yes.”

Daniel looked at me.

“He was carrying a bag.”

“What was inside?”

“We don't know.”

“Then how does that prove anything?”

“It doesn't by itself.”

He removed another document.

“This does.”

It was a signed payment authorization.

Robert had paid a hospital employee.

The date was March 14, 2008.

The same day I had been admitted.

I stared at the signature.

My uncle's.

“Why would he pay someone at the hospital?”

“To alter your records.”

Thomas had said the same thing.

Now there was evidence.

I looked at Michael.

“Did you know?”

He shook his head.

“No.”

“Did my father?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn't he stop Robert?”

“Because he was already dying.”

I closed my eyes.

Everything had been happening while my father was trying to protect the trust.

He had known Robert was stealing.

He had known about the pregnancy.

He had known the girls were in danger.

And he had known I was being manipulated.

Yet he had never told me.

Perhaps because he believed keeping me ignorant was safer.

Perhaps because he was wrong.

Daniel looked at Lily.

“There is something else.”

She stiffened.

“What?”

“I found your original birth record.”

He handed her a sealed envelope.

She didn't open it.

“Why are you giving it to me?”

“Because it's yours.”

She looked at me.

I nodded.

She opened it.

Her eyes moved across the page.

Then she began to cry.

“What does it say?”

She handed it to me.

Mother: Susan Miller.

Father: Daniel Harris.

Child: Female.

No other names.

No adoption.

No transfer.

No legal abandonment.

Lily looked at me.

“So I was always yours.”

“Yes.”

She shook her head.

“They erased me.”

“They tried.”

Daniel looked away.

“I helped them.”

Lily's voice hardened.

“Yes.”

He nodded.

“I did.”

She folded the document.

“I don't know what I want from you.”

“You don't have to know.”

“Good.”

She walked away.

I watched her go.

Daniel looked at me.

“She has every right to hate me.”

I didn't answer.

Michael stood beside me.

After a long silence, he said, “We need to find Eleanor.”

We found her the following morning.

She was staying in a hotel outside Boston.

When she saw the memory card, her face changed.

“I thought this was destroyed.”

“You knew about it?”

“I knew your father made a copy.”

“Where?”

“In a private archive.”

“Can we access it?”

She nodded.

“But only with the original trust documents.”

Thomas was still in the hospital, so we had to proceed without him.

Eleanor led us to a small records facility outside the city.

The archive was underground.

Cold.

Dry.

Silent.

She opened a metal cabinet.

Inside were boxes marked with my father's initials.

The first contained business records.

The second contained medical records.

The third contained photographs.

I opened it.

There was a photograph of my father holding two newborn babies.

My hands began to shake.

“Those are them.”

Eleanor nodded.

“Your father had the photograph taken after the birth.”

“Why didn't I ever see it?”

“Because Robert took the original.”

I turned it over.

On the back was a date.

July 20, 2008.

And a sentence in my father's handwriting.

Both alive.

My eyes filled with tears.

For eighteen years, I had believed my daughter was gone.

She had never been gone.

She had been hidden.

I found another photograph.

This one showed two bassinets.

Two babies.

One had a small bracelet.

Lily.

The other had a bracelet marked Emma.

My twin.

Alive.

Somewhere.

I looked at Eleanor.

“Where is she?”

Eleanor shook her head.

“I don't know.”

“There must be a record.”

“There is.”

She opened another box.

Inside was a file.

Emma Harris.

But most of the pages had been removed.

Only one remained.

A school photograph.

A teenage girl.

Dark hair.

Brown eyes.

The same mark beside the eyebrow.

I stared at her face.

Lily came closer.

“She's me.”

“No,” I whispered.

“She looks exactly like me.”

“She is your sister.”

Eleanor turned the page.

There was an address.

A city.

A street.

And a handwritten note.

Do not approach until the trust is secure.

I looked at the date.

The note had been written three months earlier.

“Someone knew where she was.”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Eleanor looked toward Michael.

He had gone pale.

“What?”

He said nothing.

“Michael.”

He closed his eyes.

“I know that address.”

My heart stopped.

“How?”

“I've been there.”

“When?”

“Three years ago.”

“Why?”

He looked at me.

“Because I was checking whether she was safe.”

I stared.

“You knew where my other daughter was.”

“Yes.”

“For three years?”

“Yes.”

“You told me Lily was the only child you knew about.”

“I thought Emma was protected.”

“You lied again.”

He lowered his head.

“I know.”

I walked away from him.

For the first time since discovering the truth, I felt something colder than anger.

Betrayal.

Not because he had protected Lily.

Not because he had hidden the trust.

But because he had continued making decisions about my children without giving me the right to make them myself.

Eleanor touched my arm.

“Susan.”

I looked at her.

“There is another problem.”

“What?”

“The trust's current appointment.”

She showed me a document.

Robert Miller was now listed as trustee.

“But that's fraudulent.”

“Yes.”

“Then why is it recognized?”

“Because the original trustee signed a resignation.”

“Eleanor?”

“No.”

“Who?”

She pointed to the signature.

My heart sank.

It belonged to Thomas.

But Thomas had never resigned.

Eleanor shook her head.

“The signature is forged.”

“Then we can prove it.”

“Yes.”

“What happens when we do?”

“Robert loses control.”

“And the trust?”

“Returns to its original terms.”

“Lily?”

“She becomes the beneficiary.”

I looked at Lily.

She was reading the documents over my shoulder.

“What about Emma?”

Eleanor hesitated.

“That depends on whether the court recognizes her as the second beneficiary.”

“Why wouldn't they?”

“Because Robert's lawyers will argue that the trust was intended for one surviving child.”

I understood.

That was the final trap.

The two girls had been separated because the trust could become legally complicated.

Robert had created the uncertainty.

Then he had used that uncertainty to seize control.

Daniel suddenly looked toward the hallway.

“What?”

He raised one hand.

Everyone became silent.

Footsteps.

Someone was approaching.

Eleanor moved toward the door.

Daniel whispered, “We need to leave.”

The door opened.

A man stepped inside.

It wasn't Robert.

It was Thomas's brother.

He looked at the documents on the table.

Then at Daniel.

“You shouldn't have found these.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“You were working for Robert.”

The man pulled a gun.

Everything happened at once.

Daniel shoved Eleanor aside.

Michael grabbed Lily.

I dropped behind the cabinet.

A shot struck the metal door.

Daniel tackled the man.

They crashed against the table.

The documents scattered across the floor.

The gun slid beneath a cabinet.

The man reached for it.

Daniel struck his hand away.

Michael grabbed him from behind.

Jake pulled the gun out of reach.

For several seconds nobody moved.

Then the man laughed.

“You think this ends here?”

Daniel looked at him.

“Who sent you?”

The man smiled.

“Ask Robert.”

Police arrived minutes later.

The man was arrested.

The evidence was secured.

And for the first time, I believed we might actually be able to prove what had happened.

But as we left the archive, Daniel stopped me.

“There is one more thing.”

I turned.

“What now?”

He looked toward Lily.

“The person who can prove whether Emma is alive isn't Robert.”

“Who is it?”

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Michael.”

I stared at my husband.

He looked away.

And I knew, before he said another word, that there was still one truth he had never told me.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: The Court Finally Exposed Robert’s Forgery, Yet the Letter My Father Left
