bright and ordinary.

Sunlight crossed the bedroom floor.

A delivery truck groaned somewhere outside.

A dog barked twice and stopped.

The world had no idea that my wedding day had already ended before it began.

My dress hung inside its garment bag beside the closet.

I had spent months choosing it.

Now I looked at it and wondered how a piece of fabric could carry so many memories for a life that had never existed.

There was a knock.

“Mom?”

“Come in.”

Harry opened the disappeared.

A few minutes later, Selena came in and hugged me around the waist.

“You're really getting married.”

I rested my cheek against her hair.

“Yes.”

She pulled away.

“Are you happy?”

The question caught me.

I looked into her eyes.

“I'm happy to be here with you.”

She seemed satisfied with that answer.

At the venue, everything looked exactly as I had planned months earlier.

Flowers lined the aisle.

Candles waited on the tables.

The cake stood beneath its glass cover.

Guests moved through the room carrying drinks and greeting relatives.

Oliver arrived in a dark suit.

He looked nervous.

Not guilty.

Nervous.

He took both my hands.

“You look incredible.”

“Thank you.”

“You flashed.

For the photograph, we looked like two people in love.

Behind us, Aunt Bev watched quietly.

Denise stood near the entrance.

Chelsea was there too.

Our eyes met.

I gave her the smallest nod.

She returned it.

No one else understood what passed between us.

At eleven-thirty, I went to the private room where the children were waiting.

Harry was eating a cookie.

Selena was trying to fix Mika's hair.

Mika held out a ribbon.

“Mom, it's walked toward the front.

Oliver waited beside the officiant.

For several seconds, I allowed myself to see the scene as everyone else saw it.

A bride.

A groom.

Two families.

Flowers.

Promises.

A future apparently waiting to begin.

Then I reached him.

He smiled.

“Hi.”

“Hi.”

The officiant began speaking.

I heard the words without absorbing them.

Then Oliver took my hands.

His voice was steady.

“I promise to stand beside you.”

I watched his face.

“I promise to love you and the children.”

My throat tightened.

He said it so naturally.

As though he had never spoken about pretending.

As though the children had never been described as leverage.

As though he hadn't spent the previous night discussing my house and savings with his mother.

When it was my turn, I looked at Harry.

He was watching me carefully.

Selena had tears in her eyes.

Mika held her hands together.

I knew I could not say the words.

Not because I was afraid.

Because I would be lying.

“I can't,” I
