3 – Martin Came to My House Carrying an Apology and a Folder, but the Documents Inside Revealed a Family Investigation Far Deeper Than I Expected

Martin arrived at ten the next morning.

Claire came with him.

So did her brother David.

I watched them approach from the living-room window.

They looked nothing like the confident group that had surrounded the Christmas tree.

David's expensive coat was buttoned incorrectly.

Claire kept her arms folded across her chest.

Martin looked older.

Not physically, perhaps.

But the certainty had gone from his face.

I opened the door.

“Come in.”

They stepped inside.

Martin glanced around the house.

He had been there many times.

But this time he wasn't judging the furniture.

He was studying it.

“How long have you owned this place?” he asked.

“Before Claire and I married.”

He looked at Claire.

She looked away.

We sat in the living room.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Martin placed a folder on the coffee table.

“I owe you an apology.”

I didn't touch the folder.

“You owe Sophie one.”

“I know.”

“Then tell her.”

He swallowed.

“I will.”

“Not to me.”

He nodded.

David leaned forward.

“Daniel, we didn't know.”

“Didn't know what?”

“That the company was yours.”

I stared at him.

“You've worked there for six years.”

“I thought you were a contractor.”

“You never wondered why the owner kept showing up at company sitting in front of them for years.

Martin opened the folder.

“This is why I came.”

He pulled out copies of bank statements, corporate records, property documents, shook her head.

“I didn't give him anything.”

I turned toward David.

He shifted in his chair.

“David?”

He looked at his father.

Then at me.

“I found some of it.”

“Why?”

“I was worried.”

“About what?”

“That you were hiding money.”

I studied him.

“You thought I was stealing from my own company?”

“No.”

“Then you thought I was hiding assets from Claire.”

He said nothing.

I understood.

The divorce had not been a private matter.

The family had been preparing for it.

“Who hired the investigator?”

Claire's expression changed.

Martin looked down.

David finally answered.

“Mom.”

Linda.

Of course.

Suddenly, years of questions made sense.

Linda had asked how much work I had.

Whether business was slow.

Whether I owned our house.

Whether the truck was mine.

Whether I had investments.

I had always assumed she was simply nosy.

She had been collecting information.

“Why?” I asked.

David rubbed his palms together.

“She thought Claire had the right to know what you were worth before filing.”

“She already knew.”

“You never told the family.”

“They weren't entitled to know.”

Martin's jaw tightened.

“You married into this family.”

“And apparently that made my bank accounts a family discussion.”

Nobody answered.

I picked up another document.

It showed a partial ownership structure of my business.

Holding companies.

Commercial properties.

Investments.

The numbers were mostly accurate.

Then I noticed one valuation.

I smiled.

“They missed something.”

David looked up.

“What?”

“The holding company listed here owns my commercial properties.”

“Yes.”

“You found fourteen.”

“That’s what the investigator found.”

“There are twenty-eight.”

David went pale.

Martin stared at me.

“Twenty-eight?”

“Yes.”

“How much are they worth?”

“Enough.”

Silence filled the room.

Claire finally spoke.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

I looked at her.

“I did.”

“When?”

“Every time you asked whether we were going to be okay.”

“I meant financially.”

“So did I.”

Her face tightened.

I could see that my answer hurt her.

What I couldn't determine was whether she was grieving the marriage or the version of me she had believed she married.

Claire reached toward my hand.

I moved mine away.

Martin stood.

“I want to make this right.”

“You can't.”

“I can.”

“No.”

His voice broke.

“Daniel, I made a mistake.”

“You made a series of decisions.”

He lowered his head.

Then he said something I hadn't expected.

“I was jealous.”

I waited.

“You had what I wanted.”

“A company?”

“A life.”

He looked at the floor.

“My business failed years ago. I never recovered. When Claire married you, I thought you were beneath her. Then I watched you build something I couldn't.”

He swallowed.

“I hated you for it.”

For the first time, Martin had given me an honest answer.

I almost respected him for it.

Almost.

“You still put my daughter outside.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

“That is what I won't forgive.”

“I understand.”

“No.”

He looked up.

“You think this is about money.”

His face changed.

“It isn't.”

I walked toward the door.

“It is about what you taught my daughter she was worth.”

Martin left.

David followed.

Claire remained.

She stood beside the sofa.

“Do you hate me?”

“No.”

She seemed surprised.

“I wish I did.”

Her eyes filled.

“I wish things were different.”

“So do I.”

“Could we start again?”

“No.”

She nodded slowly.

Then she reached into her purse.

“I have something for you.”

She placed a small envelope on the table.

I picked it up.

“What is this?”

“The original divorce agreement.”

“I already received a copy.”

“This one is different.”

Inside was a handwritten note.

I read it twice.

Claire had withdrawn the divorce petition.

I looked at her.

“You withdrew it?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I finally understood what I was doing.”

“You understood after your family started losing money.”

Her expression tightened.

“That isn't fair.”

“Isn't it?”

She had no answer.

I handed the envelope back.

“I won't let anyone manipulate me into staying married.”

“I know.”

“Then why withdraw it?”

“Because I don't want to leave you anymore.”

I shook my head.

“You already left.”

She began to cry.

I opened the door.

Before she reached her car, she turned.

“I really did love you.”

I believed her.

That was the cruelest part.

After she left, I returned to my office.

Something about Martin's folder bothered me.

The investigator had information that shouldn't have been available to a private investigator working from public records.

There were internal company figures.

Client information.

Private documents.

Material that had never been published.

I called Sterling.

“I need you to trace the source of these documents.”

“Why?”

“Because some of them came from inside the company.”

He was silent.

“I'll start immediately.”

That evening, Sterling called.

His voice was unusually serious.

“We found something.”

“What?”

“Someone accessed your private files three months ago.”

“Who?”

“We don't know yet.”

“Was it an employee?”

“Yes.”

“Which one?”

He hesitated.

“Claire's brother.”

David.

I stared at the wall.

The same man who had just sat in my living room acting surprised by what I owned had apparently been inside my company's private records.

“What did he access?”

“Everything.”

“Banking?”

“Yes.”

“Property?”

“Yes.”

“Client contracts?”

“Yes.”

I felt a cold pressure settle behind my ribs.

“Why would he need all that?”

“That is what we're trying to determine.”

I looked at the divorce papers.

Then toward the window.

Snow was falling again.

Suddenly Christmas Eve felt different.

Maybe the divorce papers had not been the beginning.

Maybe they had been the last step in something that had started months earlier.

I called David.

He answered immediately.

“Hello?”

“Come to my office tomorrow.”

“Why?”

“Because I know what you accessed.”

There was silence.

“What do you mean?”

“I mean everything.”

He hung up.

A minute later, my phone vibrated.

A message.

I'm sorry.

Two words.

Nothing else.

I forwarded it to Sterling.

Then I opened the company's security logs.

David's access records appeared first.

But another entry caught my eye.

Same night.

Same computer.

Different account.

I leaned closer.

The account belonged to Claire.

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: The Security Records Forced Me to Face What Claire Had Hidden, and the
