appeared.

His face was pale.

He looked at the document in my hand.

“You found it.”

I stepped back.

“Found what?”

He stared at the account statement.

“The reason Grandpa didn't trust me.”

“Then tell me.”

Alan closed his eyes.

“I didn't know about the money.”

“Who did?”

He opened his eyes.

“Dale.”

“And who else?”

He hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Your mother.”

I felt the room disappear around me.

“My mother is dead.”

“I know.”

“Then stop saying her name.”

Alan shook his head.

“I don't mean she sent the money.”

“Then what?”

“She left instructions.”

“For what?”

“To protect you.”

I looked at the statement.

“By paying Dale?”

“No.”

“Then why was he receiving it?”

Alan's face changed.

“Because Dale wasn't receiving the money.”

He pointed to the account number.

“That account belongs to Robert.”

I stopped breathing.

My father had been alive.

My mother had known.

Grandpa had known.

Dale had been moving money.

And the three hundred dollars was connected to the man I had spent forty years believing was dead.

Before I could ask another question, the basement lights went out.

A door slammed upstairs.

Pam screamed.

Then came the sound of footsteps running across the floor.

Someone was inside the house.

Rebecca grabbed my arm.

“Stay here.”

But I was already looking toward the stairs.

Because on the workbench, beside the original trust, lay the final envelope.

And written across it in Grandpa’s handwriting were four words:

FOR NANCY — LAST PIECE.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: The Final
