Dust drifted through it. Somewhere upstairs, a floorboard creaked.

Rebecca kept one hand on my arm.

“Stay here.”

Alan stepped toward the stairs.

“No.”

She looked at him.

“If someone is in the house, you don't know who it is.”

Alan shook his head.

“I know.”

“How?”

“Because I know how they move.”

He went up three steps.

Then stopped.

A shadow crossed the doorway above.

Alan came back down quickly.

“It’s empty.”

Rebecca didn't believe him.

She went up first, with Alan behind her. I stayed beside Pam until the lights suddenly came back on.

The basement looked exactly as it had before.

Except the final envelope was gone.

I stared at the workbench.

“Where is it?”

Pam looked at me.

“I didn't take it.”

Alan shook his head.

“I didn't either.”

Rebecca came down the stairs holding something.

“This was upstairs.”

It was the envelope.

But it was torn open.

My name was still visible across the front.

“Someone took it,” I said.

Rebecca handed it to me.

“Read it.”

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

Nancy,

If you have reached this point, you have already discovered that the money was never the reason.

The three hundred dollars was the bait.

Dale knew you would accept because you believed the basement contained nothing worth protecting.

He was right about one thing.

You did not know what was there.

But he was wrong about why.

I kept reading.

The company did not disappear.

I moved it.

The controlling shares, the land, the warehouse, and the remaining assets were placed into structures that could not be sold without your written consent.

Your mother helped me.

Your father helped me.

Alan helped me later, though he never understood the whole arrangement.

Dale was not supposed to know.

My hands shook.

Rebecca leaned closer.

The money Dale received came from an account Robert controlled.

It was payment for information.

He was not buying the company.

He was buying time.

I stopped.

“Buying time?”

Rebecca nodded.

“Keep going.”

The account was created under Robert's name because Martin's people were still searching for him.

Dale was approached years ago.

He was told that if he provided information about the Harper family, he would be paid.

He accepted.

At first, he gave them harmless details.

Later, he began giving them more.

Your mother discovered this.

She confronted him.

He threatened her.

She came to me.

Together we created the trust.

The three hundred dollars was used repeatedly because it looked insignificant.

It was not.

Each payment corresponded to information Dale supplied.

The final payment was made shortly before my death.

That was when I knew he had discovered the trust was about to expire.

I lowered the page.

Nobody spoke.

Alan looked sick.

Pam covered her mouth.

Rebecca pointed to the next paragraph.

I continued.

Dale believes the person behind the payments is Robert.

He is wrong.

Robert only allowed the account to be used.

The person who controlled the account was your mother.

I stared at the words.

My mother.

Again.

But this time the meaning was different.

She hadn't been secretly paying Dale to betray us.

She had been using the account to track him.

I read faster.

Louise knew Dale had become involved with people connected to Martin.

She wanted proof.

She instructed Robert to keep the account active.

She used the payments to identify what information Dale was selling.

She was afraid that confronting him too early would expose you.

I felt tears gathering.

The letter continued.

Your mother was not perfect.

She made choices I disagreed with.

She lied to you about your father.

She believed that lie was necessary.

I disagreed.

But I understood why she made it.

Robert wanted to return.

Louise refused.

Not because she hated him.

Because she had received a final threat.

If Robert came home, Nancy would be taken.

I stopped reading.

Rebecca waited.

Pam was crying quietly.

Alan stared at the floor.

“What threat?” I asked.

Nobody answered.

I looked at Alan.

“You knew.”

He shook his head.

“Not all of it.”

“What do you know?”

“My mother received a it?”

“Yes.”

I looked at Rebecca.

“We need that letter.”

She nodded.

I returned to the final page.

The final paragraph was written differently. The handwriting became less steady.

If I fail to tell you everything, find Robert.

He has the final piece.

Not the company.

Not the money.

The truth about who helped Martin.

I folded the letter.

“Then we find him.”

My phone rang.

Robert.

I answered.

“Dad?”

“I know me.”

“I know.”

Pam stepped forward.

“I want to come too.”

I stared at her.

“Why?”

“Because I know what Dale will do if he finds Robert.”

Rebecca looked between us.

“Then we go together.”

The church was nearly abandoned.

A single yellow light burned above the entrance.

We arrived twenty minutes early.

No one was there.

Ten minutes passed.

Then a car appeared.

An older sedan.

The driver's door opened.

A man stepped out.

He was tall, thinner than I expected, with gray hair and a slight bend in his shoulders.

He stopped several yards away.

I knew him.

Not because I remembered his face.

Because I had spent forty years seeing pieces of him.

The eyes.

The hands.

The shape of his smile.

“Dad?”

He nodded.

I walked toward him.

He didn't move.

For a moment, neither of us knew what to do.

Then he opened his arms.

I stepped into them.

He held me carefully, almost as though he feared I might disappear.

I cried against his shoulder.

He whispered, “I'm sorry.”

I shook my head.

“You're here.”

“I am.”

“You're really here.”

“Yes.”

He pulled away and looked at me.

“I have your mother's eyes.”

I laughed through tears.

“You look like Alan.”

He smiled.

“I've heard worse.”

Alan approached.

Robert stared at him.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Alan said, “I'm sorry.”

Robert nodded.

“I know.”

“I should have told her.”

“Yes.”

“I was afraid.”

“So was I.”

Pam stood several feet away.

Robert looked at her.

“You kept your promise.”

Pam began crying.

“I tried.”

“I know.”

We went inside the church.

Robert carried a small leather case.

He placed it on a wooden bench.

“This is what your grandfather wanted you to have.”

He opened it.

Inside was a cassette, several photographs, and a sealed letter.

I recognized the handwriting.

Louise.

My mother.

Robert handed me the letter.

“She wrote this the night before I left.”

I opened it.

Nancy,

If you ever read this, then I failed to keep the truth from hurting you.

I closed my eyes.

My mother had written directly to me.

She explained that she had never believed Robert was dangerous.

She believed the people around him were.

She admitted that she had asked him to disappear.

She admitted that she had lied to me.

But she also explained something Grandpa had never known.

She had discovered that Martin Vale wasn't acting alone.

One person inside the Harper family was providing him with information.

Someone with access to the company's accounts.

Someone who knew when Robert would meet Grandpa.

Someone who knew where the family kept its records.

The letter stopped there.

I looked at Robert.

“Who?”

He shook his head.

“Listen to the tape.”

We played it.

My mother's voice came through.

Older than I remembered.

Tired.

Afraid.

“I don't know how long I have.”

A pause.

“Martin isn't the one I'm afraid of anymore.”

My breath caught.

“The person helping him is someone Henry trusts.”

Another pause.

“Someone who can reach Nancy without anyone questioning it.”

The recording crackled.

Then she said the name.

I stared at Alan.

It wasn't him.

It wasn't Dale.

It wasn't Pam.

It was someone none of us had considered.

The recording ended.

I looked at Robert.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

“Where is that person now?”

Robert looked toward the church doors.

“Closer than you think.”

The doors opened.

A familiar figure stepped inside.

And I finally understood why Grandpa had warned me that the greatest danger would come from the people who claimed to be protecting the family.

<a
