Word had spread quickly. People who had first bought one cinnamon roll came back for six. A café owner asked whether she could supply pastries twice a week.

Sasha was cautious about accepting.

“I don't want to build something I can't manage,” she told me.

“That sounds sensible.”

“Omar says I should hire someone.”

“You don't need to prove anything by exhausting yourself.”

She smiled.

That was another change.

Before, Sasha had believed hard work meant absorbing everyone else's needs until there was nothing left of her own. Now she was learning the difference between being generous and being consumed.

Omar helped without taking over. He handled deliveries when she was busy. He built shelves in the pantry. He kept track of expenses. Most importantly, he asked before making decisions.

One afternoon, he came into the kitchen carrying a tape measure.

“I was thinking about moving the freezer.”

Sasha looked up from a bowl of dough.

“Where?”

“Near the back wall. There were evenings when Sasha remembered something from those terrible weeks and became quiet. Sometimes she woke from a dream and couldn't explain why she was frightened.

But they talked.

When a difficult subject appeared, neither of them ran from it.

That mattered more than promises.

Denise remained absent.

She had not come to the property since the diner meeting. She sent no messages demanding access. She mailed one birthday card to Omar's father and another to Sasha's address.

Sasha left hers unopened for several days.

Eventually she opened it.

Inside was a short note.

I know I have no right to ask for anything. I hope someday I can show you that I understand.

There was no request to visit.

No accusation.

No mention of Omar.

Sasha folded the card and put it in a drawer.

“Does that mean you forgive her?” I asked.

“No.”

“Does it mean you hate her?”

“No.”

“What does it mean?”

She thought for a moment.

“It means I'm not responsible for deciding what she becomes.”

I nodded.

That answer told me more about her healing than any apology could have.

Then, on a rainy Tuesday morning, everything changed again.

Sasha called me while I was making coffee.

“Mom, Omar got a letter.”

“What kind of letter?”

“I don't know.
