I didn't send it."

"Then who did?"

"I think Margaret did."

Dr. Hale looked at her.

"She had it?"

"She kept it."

"Why?"

"Because she believed one day the truth would need proof."

I looked at the photograph.

Two babies.

One marked.

One unmarked.

Now I understood why the image mattered.

It showed exactly what Margaret had seen.

But another question remained.

"What happened to Daniel after the switch?"

Eleanor's eyes filled.

"I don't know."

Dr. Hale stiffened.

"You said you knew."

"I know what happened that night."

"Then tell us."

Eleanor sat.

"Your son was taken from the nursery."

"By whom?"

"The nurse."

"What was her name?"

"Clara Bell."

Dr. Hale stared.

"Clara."

He remembered.

"She disappeared two days later."

Eleanor nodded.

"She took Daniel."

"Why?"

"She had a daughter."

Her voice became strained.

"Her daughter needed expensive medical treatment. Clara was desperate."

"Who paid her?"

Eleanor looked at Denise.

"The Vance family."

Silence.

Dr. Hale's face hardened.

"My husband?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because he wanted the biological heir hidden."

"Why would he want Daniel hidden?"

"Because he didn't know where Julian's biological father was."

Eleanor's voice dropped.

"He believed Daniel's existence could expose the entire family."

I looked at my son.

"So they took a child to protect a fortune."

Eleanor nodded.

"Yes."

"Where did Clara take him?"

"We don't know."

Dr. Hale stepped toward her.

"You let thirty-four years pass."

"I searched."

"Not enough."

"I searched."

His anger filled the room.

"You knew my son might be alive."

"I knew there was a possibility."

"That is not the same thing."

"No."

She accepted the accusation.

"It isn't."

The door opened.

A nurse entered carrying another envelope.

"Ms. Carter?"

I turned.

"This was left at reception."

She handed it to me.

My name was written across the front.

Again.

I opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

This one was newer.

A young boy, perhaps five years old, stood beside a woman in a rural setting.

The boy had dark hair.

And pale green in his left eye.

On the back was another message.

HE WAS ALIVE WHEN THEY TOOK HIM.

Dr. Hale stared at the image.

His knees nearly gave way.

"That's him."

"You know?"

"His face."

He touched the photograph.

"That's Daniel."

Eleanor began crying.

"Where was this taken?"

"I don't know."

Denise studied the background.

"There's a sign."

She enlarged the image.

A weathered sign stood behind the woman.

Only three letters were visible.

RIV.

"We can search for it."

Dr. Hale looked at me.

"I need to go."

"Not alone."

He shook his head.

"This isn't your burden."

I looked down at my son.

"It became my burden the moment Julian tried to take him."

Eleanor stood.

"You cannot go."

"Why?"

"Because if the person who sent these photographs wants you to follow them, it may be a trap."

Denise nodded.

"She's right."

I hated hearing it.

But she was right.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

"Hello?"

A man's voice came through.

"Do you have the DNA results?"

My blood ran cold.

"Who is this?"

"You shouldn't have tested the child."

"Who are you?"

"You need to understand something."

The voice was calm.

"If Julian loses the trust, people will come after your son."

I tightened my grip on the phone.

"Where is Daniel?"

A pause.

Then:

"Closer than you think."

The line went dead.

Everyone in the room stared at me.

Denise immediately asked, "What did he say?"

I told her.

Dr. Hale's face changed.

Eleanor whispered, "He's alive."

The words were almost prayerful.

Then another thought hit me.

"Julian knows."

Denise nodded.

"And if he knows the test is positive, he may act now."

My phone vibrated again.

This time it was a message.

A photograph of the hospital entrance.

Taken minutes earlier.

The caption contained only five words.

LOOK OUTSIDE.

I approached the window.

A black SUV was parked across the street.

Someone sat behind the wheel.

I couldn't see his face.

Then the vehicle started moving.

It disappeared around the corner.

Denise closed the curtains.

"Nobody leaves this room alone."

Dr. Hale looked at his recovered son's photograph.

"I waited thirty-four years."

He wiped his eyes.

"I can wait one more hour."

But none of us believed that.

Because the truth was no longer buried.

And now someone knew we had found it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: The
