Temperature. Heart rate."

He sat down.

"He was alive."

The record continued for several months.

Then stopped.

"Where did he go?"

Denise opened another box.

We found three more visits.

Daniel had been treated for a respiratory infection.

Then a fever.

Then a minor injury.

Every record listed the same guardian.

Clara Bell.

But the final page had a different name.

Margaret Hale.

Dr. Hale stared.

"What?"

The date was twenty-nine years earlier.

There was a note.

Patient transferred to private care.

"Margaret found him."

I whispered the words.

Denise looked at the page.

"Private care by whom?"

There was no name.

Only an address.

Dr. Hale recognized it.

"My old house."

I looked at him.

"What?"

"Margaret's house."

"She took Daniel back?"

"Apparently."

His hands shook.

"Then why didn't she tell me?"

We searched the rest of the file.

There was a letter.

The paper was folded and yellowed.

Dr. Hale opened it.

The handwriting was unmistakably Margaret's.

Samuel,

I found our son.

I couldn't bring him home.

Not yet.

They are watching.

If I return with him, they will take him again.

I need you to believe me.

I love you.

The letter ended there.

Dr. Hale pressed it against his chest.

He was crying.

Denise looked away.

I didn't.

He deserved to be seen.

Then I noticed something.

"There's another page."

I pulled it from the folder.

It contained a list of names.

At the bottom was Julian Vance.

Beside his name was a date.

His thirty-fifth birthday.

And a note.

TRUST ACTIVATION.

My stomach tightened.

"That's why."

Denise nodded.

"Julian needs control before the birthday."

Dr. Hale looked up.

"What happens when the trust activates?"

"Ownership transfers."

"To whom?"

"The biological heir."

I looked at my son.

"If Julian knows Daniel's line exists, he knows the inheritance can bypass him."

"Yes."

"Then my baby is the target."

Dr. Hale stood.

"We have to get back."

The floor creaked behind us.

We turned.

Someone was standing in the doorway.

A woman.

Older.

Thin.

Gray hair tucked beneath a wool hat.

She looked directly at Dr. Hale.

"Samuel."

He froze.

"Margaret?"

She nodded.

He crossed the room.

For a moment, they simply stared at each other.

Then he pulled her into his arms.

She collapsed against him.

"I thought you were dead."

"I know."

"Why?"

"Because they wanted you to."

He pulled back.

"Where is Daniel?"

Margaret looked at me.

Then at my son.

Her face changed.

She began crying.

"He is here."

Dr. Hale stared.

"What?"

"Your son is here."

I looked at her.

"Where?"

She touched my baby's blanket.

"Not the way you think."

My heart pounded.

"Tell us."

Margaret sat.

"After I found Daniel, I watched him from a distance."

"Why?"

"Because I was afraid someone would discover him."

"Did Clara know?"

"She died."

"When?"

"Twenty-two years ago."

"What happened to Daniel?"

Margaret looked at Dr. Hale.

"He grew up believing he had no father."

Dr. Hale covered his mouth.

"Where is he now?"

Margaret looked toward me.

"He is closer to you than you realize."

The words made my skin prickle.

"Who?"

She shook her head.

"Not yet."

Denise stepped forward.

"We need specifics."

Margaret looked at her.

"You sound like Vivian's old supervisor."

"That was me."

Margaret smiled faintly.

"Vivian always trusted people who asked difficult questions."

I looked at her.

"How do you know me?"

"I've watched you."

The answer frightened me.

"How long?"

"Since you married Julian."

I stepped back.

"You knew?"

"Yes."

"Then why didn't you come forward?"

"Because I needed to know whether you were safe."

Margaret's gaze softened.

"You were."

I looked at my son.

"Then tell me who Daniel is."

She hesitated.

Before she could answer, a car door slammed outside.

Everyone froze.

Denise moved toward the window.

"There are two vehicles."

Dr. Hale stood.

"Julian?"

"I don't know."

Margaret's face went pale.

"They found us."

"Who?"

She looked at me.

"The people who took Daniel."

Footsteps sounded outside.

Then a voice called through the broken doorway.

"Margaret."

She closed her eyes.

"He's here."

Dr. Hale reached for her hand.

"Who?"

Margaret whispered one word.

"Julian."

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: Julian arrived before we could leave, and
