nine.

Charles Whitmore arrived first.

He wore a charcoal suit and carried no briefcase.

He looked exactly as he had at the him.

“You seem remarkably well informed.”

“I sit on the board.”

“That explains some things.”

His smile barely moved.

Evelyn entered behind me.

Daniel came last.

He avoided my eyes.

My mother was already seated.

She looked exhausted.

The room contained eight people.

Two hospital executives.

Three foundation representatives.

Charles.

Daniel.

My mother.

And me.

The private trust representative joined by video.

A man named Arthur Hale.

I had never met him.

He introduced himself as the trustee responsible for Northbridge's financial interests.

I recognized his voice.

It was the voice from my apartment.

My hands went still.

He looked at me through the screen.

“Ms. Carter.”

I stared at him.

“You called me.”

His expression did not change.

“I don't know what you mean.”

“You told me to stop.”

Charles looked between us.

“What is this?”

Arthur smiled.

“Perhaps we should focus on the contracts.”

I opened my folder.

“No.”

Everyone looked at me.

“We're going to focus on ownership first.”

Daniel shifted in his chair.

I placed the Northbridge records on the table.

“Northbridge Health Logistics was funded before the hospital ever transferred money to it.”

Charles said nothing.

I continued.

“The initial capital came through Meridian Strategic Holdings.”

Arthur interrupted.

“That is a private transaction.”

“Not anymore.”

I placed another document beside it.

“The hospital foundation later transferred funds into Northbridge through two intermediary accounts.”

One of the foundation representatives frowned.

“I wasn't aware of that.”

“You should have been.”

My mother looked at the table.

Charles finally spoke.

“These transactions were authorized.”

“Some were.”

I slid another page forward.

“Some weren't.”

Daniel stared at the document.

I looked directly at him.

“Your signature appears on three unauthorized transfers.”

He shook his head.

“That's impossible.”

“Then explain them.”

“I didn't sign those.”

“Good.”

I turned the page.

“Because I have evidence someone copied your signature too.”

Daniel looked frightened.

Charles noticed.

That was the first time I had seen Charles lose control of the room.

Only briefly.

But it happened.

Arthur leaned toward the camera.

“You're making serious accusations.”

“No.”

I looked at him.

“I'm presenting records.”

My mother finally spoke.

“Charles knew about Northbridge.”

Charles turned toward her.

“Be careful.”

She looked directly at him.

“I've been careful for three years.”

Nobody moved.

She continued.

“You told me the company was temporary.”

Charles said nothing.

“You told me the foundation money would be returned.”

Still nothing.

“You told me my daughter was safe.”

That sentence changed the room.

I looked at Charles.

He did not look back.

Evelyn whispered, “Mom.”

My mother continued.

“You promised that if I cooperated, you would protect my family.”

Charles stood.

“This meeting is over.”

I stood too.

“No.”

He turned.

“You don't control this hospital.”

“No.”

I held up the original authorization.

“But neither do you.”

Charles looked at the document.

His face changed.

That was the second mistake he made.

The first had been assuming the old records were gone.

The second was showing me that the original mattered.

I asked, “Why did you need my mother to sign the transfer?”

He said nothing.

“Why couldn't you authorize it yourself?”

Nothing.

“Because the foundation's bylaws required her approval.”

My mother nodded.

“That was the reason.”

I turned to the foundation representatives.

“Then every transfer bearing her signature needs to be compared against the original board minutes.”

One of them began taking notes.

Arthur's expression hardened.

“This is absurd.”

“No.”

I looked at him.

“This is accounting.”

Daniel suddenly stood.

“I want legal counsel.”

Charles turned toward him.

“Sit down.”

Daniel did not.

“I said I want legal counsel.”

Charles stared at him.

For the first time, Daniel seemed to understand that Charles would not protect him.

He sat again.

I looked at Evelyn.

She opened her folder.

Inside were copies of the oldest procurement records.

She placed them on the table.

“The missing shipment was redirected through a warehouse controlled by Meridian.”

One of the hospital executives stared at Charles.

“Is that true?”

Charles said nothing.

I continued.

“The shipment was later reported as lost.”

My mother closed her eyes.

“Who signed the routing change?” I asked.

She answered.

“I did.”

“And who instructed you?”

She looked at Charles.

“He did.”

Charles shook his head.

“You're lying.”

My mother reached into her purse.

She removed a small envelope.

“I kept this.”

She placed it on the table.

Charles went completely still.

I opened it.

Inside was a handwritten note.

Charles's handwriting.

A simple instruction:

Change the route. Do not involve procurement.

There was a date.

The same date as the missing shipment.

And a second name.

Arthur Hale.

The room fell silent.

Arthur leaned closer to the camera.

“That document is meaningless.”

“Why?”

“Because it is unsigned.”

I looked at my mother.

She nodded.

“He gave it to me himself.”

Charles stood again.

“You have no right to accuse me based on an unsigned note.”

I looked at him.

“I don't need to accuse you.”

I pushed the document toward the hospital's legal representative.

“I need you to preserve the evidence.”

The legal representative picked it up.

Charles immediately walked out.

Arthur disconnected.

Daniel remained seated.

He looked at me.

“You don't understand what happens next.”

“What happens next?”

“The hospital will tear itself apart.”

“Maybe.”

He lowered his voice.

“But you still don't know who actually took the money.”

I stared at him.

“Then tell me.”

He looked toward the door Charles had disappeared through.

“I was never the one in charge.”

“Who was?”

Daniel swallowed.

Then he said, “Ask your mother who introduced Charles to the foundation.”

My mother looked down.

I turned toward her.

“Mom?”

She didn't answer.

Evelyn's face went white.

Because she knew the name.

I could see it.

“You know,” I said.

My mother finally looked at me.

“Yes.”

“Who?”

She whispered the answer.

And it was someone neither of us had expected.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: My Mother Named the Person Who Started Everything, and the Truth Forced Me to Reconsider Why She Had Betrayed Me

The meeting began at nine.
