If we demolish it, the city loses a functioning community space for at least three years. A careful restoration could reopen sections within eighteen months.”

Someone farther down the table asked, “Wouldn't restoration cost more?”

“Initially.”

“And afterward?”

“Maintenance would be lower if we repair the underlying problems instead of covering me.

“She's young.”

I looked at him.

Richard did too.

My father cleared his throat.

“She tends to become emotionally attached to back.

“I'll look into it.”

My father suddenly spoke.

“There is no need.”

Richard turned toward him.

“I disagree.”

The conversation around the table had completely died.

Claire looked embarrassed.

Daniel looked confused.

My mother looked angry.

I understood why.

This wasn't supposed to be happening.

I was supposed to sit at the end of the table and disappear.

Instead, Richard Vale was asking questions about work don't.”

Richard's attention sharpened.

My father looked toward him.

“This is a family matter.”

Richard said nothing.

I could feel everyone's attention shifting.

My father finally leaned toward me.

“You were supposed to remain with the smaller projects.”

“Why?”

“Because that was the agreement.”

“What agreement?”

My mother's face went pale.

Claire whispered, “Dad.”

But I had already heard enough.

“What agreement?”

My father didn't answer.

Richard did.

“What agreement did your family not.”

He paused.

“But now I'm curious.”

My father pushed his chair back.

“I think this conversation has gone far enough.”

He stood.

I stayed seated.

Something cold had settled in my stomach.

For years, I had believed my family simply preferred Claire.

It had hurt.

But it had been understandable.

Now I was beginning to suspect there was something else.

Something deliberate.

Something decided before I was old enough to understand it.

After dinner, I followed my father into the hallway.

“Dad.”

He kept walking.

“Dad, stop.”

He turned.

His face looked older than it had an hour earlier.

“You should not have come tonight.”

“Why?”

“Because some things are better left alone.”

“What things?”

He looked toward the ballroom.

Then at me.

“Your mother and I made a decision when you were eighteen.”

“What decision?”

His silence answered before his words did.

“We decided Claire would represent the family.”

I stared at him.

“And me?”

“You were never good at that world.”

“That isn't an answer.”

He rubbed his forehead.

“You were given something else.”

“What?”

He didn't respond.

I stepped closer.

“Dad, what was I given?”

His eyes flicked toward the staircase.

For one second, I thought he would tell me.

Instead, he said, “Ask your mother.”

Then he walked away.

I stood alone in the hallway.

Behind me, someone spoke.

“You should listen to him.”

I turned.

Richard stood several feet away.

He had heard everything.

“Listen to what?”

His expression was unreadable.

“That he is afraid of the question.”

<a
