sitting room.

She was standing beside a cabinet I had never seen opened.

The room smelled faintly of cedar and old paper.

When she heard the door close, she didn't turn around.

“You should not have followed him.”

“I wasn't following him.”

“You know what I mean.”

“No,” I said. “I don't.”

She closed her eyes.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then she opened the cabinet.

Inside were folders.

Dozens of them.

Some were tied with ribbon.

Others had dates written across their spines.

My mother's hand moved past several folders before stopping on one.

She took it out.

My name was written on the front.

I felt something inside me go still.

“What is that?”

“You.”

“I can see that.”

She placed it on the table.

“I never wanted you to find this.”

“Why?”

“Because I thought it was kinder.”

I laughed once.

It came out without humor.

“You thought hiding my own life from me was kinder?”

She looked at me.

“You were different from Claire.”

“I know.”

“No. You don't.”

She opened the folder.

Inside were copies of legal documents.

Financial statements.

Letters.

A photograph.

I picked up the first document.

It was dated eighteen years earlier.

My hands became cold.

“This is an inheritance?”

My mother nodded.

“From your grandfather.”

I stared at the amount.

It was far larger than I had expected.

Not millions.

Much more.

“What is this?”

“Your grandfather created a private trust for you.”

“Why?”

“Because he believed you needed protection.”

“From what?”

My mother looked away.

“From this family.”

The words were so quiet I almost didn't hear them.

I read the document again.

The trust had conditions.

It was established in my name.

It could not be transferred to Claire.

It could not be controlled by my parents once I reached a certain age.

And there was another name on the paperwork.

Richard Vale.

I looked up.

“Why is Richard Vale involved?”

My mother said nothing.

“Mom.”

“He was your grandfather's attorney.”

“That doesn't explain why he is still listed.”

“He was appointed as an independent trustee.”

I felt the pieces shifting.

The dinner.

Richard's questions.

My father's fear.

The way my family had always insisted that I was better off staying out of certain rooms.

“Does Claire know?”

My mother hesitated.

That was enough.

“She knows.”

“How much?”

“Enough.”

My throat tightened.

“Does Daniel know?”

“I don't know.”

I closed the folder.

“Why did you let them treat me like I was insignificant?”

My mother looked wounded.

“We never thought you were insignificant.”

“You told people I was difficult.”

“We told people you were private.”

“You told them I wasn't part of the family business.”

“That was to protect you.”

“From what?”

She finally looked at me.

“Your father.”

The room went silent.

I stared at her.

“My father?”

“He wanted to use the trust.”

“For what?”

“To stabilize the company.”

I understood.

Slowly.

Painfully.

My grandfather had left me something.

My father had needed it.

And instead of asking me, they had spent years shaping me into someone who would never ask questions.

I sat down.

“Did you know?”

My mother nodded.

“I was there when the documents were signed.”

“And you agreed?”

“I thought I was saving the family.”

“Which family?”

She flinched.

I regretted the question immediately.

But not enough to take it back.

She reached into the cabinet again.

This time she removed an envelope.

It was sealed.

My name was written across it in handwriting I recognized.

My grandfather's.

“He told me to give you this when you turned thirty,” she said.

“I turned thirty two years ago.”

“I know.”

“Why didn't you?”

She started crying.

Not loudly.

Just enough for tears to gather beneath her eyes.

“Because by then your father had already convinced me you would destroy everything if you knew.”

I looked at the envelope.

“What did Grandpa want me to know?”

“I don't know.”

“You never opened it?”

“No.”

I took it.

The paper felt heavier than it should have.

Before I could break the seal, the door opened.

Claire stood there.

She looked at the envelope.

Then at me.

Her face changed.

“Where did you get that?”

I didn't answer.

She stepped inside.

“Mom.”

My mother wiped her face.

“Claire, please.”

“You gave it to her?”

“I didn't.”

“Then how does she have it?”

I looked at my sister.

“How much did you know?”

She froze.

“About what?”

“The trust.”

Her eyes flickered.

“That's not what matters.”

“It matters to me.”

“You don't understand what you're doing.”

“I understand that my family hid money from me.”

Claire's voice sharpened.

“It wasn't just money.”

“What was it?”

She looked toward my mother.

Then back at me.

“You think Grandpa left that because he loved you.”

“Didn't he?”

“He left it because he didn't trust Dad.”

I stood.

“What does that mean?”

Claire's jaw tightened.

“You should ask Richard.”

“Why?”

“Because he knows.”

She walked toward the door.

I followed.

“Claire.”

She stopped.

“Did you know Richard was appointed trustee?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know he still had access to the trust?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know he was coming tonight?”

She looked at me.

“No.”

I didn't believe her.

But before I could press her, a man's voice came from the hallway.

“Claire.”

Richard.

My sister turned.

He stood at the end of the corridor.

His gaze moved from Claire to the envelope in my hand.

For the first time all evening, his composure cracked.

Not fear.

Recognition.

He walked toward us.

“Sophie,” he said quietly.

“Yes?”

“You need to open that before you speak to your father.”

My pulse quickened.

“Why?”

Richard stopped in front of me.

“Because your grandfather left instructions that were never meant to be negotiated.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: Richard Told Me My Grandfather Had Prepared for This Night Years
