Quite the opposite. You have always been the most observant person in this family. The problem is that observant people are often underestimated by those who benefit from their silence.

My hands trembled.

I looked at my mother.

She was crying again.

I read on.

I created the trust because I believed you would eventually be asked to surrender what was yours for the sake of everyone else's comfort.

That was the sentence that made me sit down.

My grandfather had known.

He had seen something coming.

The letter continued.

Do not allow anyone to tell you that accepting what I left you makes you selfish. I chose you deliberately.

There were several more paragraphs.

Some concerned the trust.

Others concerned the family company.

Then I reached a sentence that made me look up.

Richard, if you are present when Sophie reads this, you will understand what I am asking.

Richard closed his eyes briefly.

“What did he ask you to do?” I said.

“Finish reading.”

I did.

If the family attempts to transfer control of the trust before Sophie receives this letter, you are authorized to freeze every associated account and initiate an independent review of the company.

My heart began beating harder.

There was more.

If Sophie has been excluded from decisions concerning the company, she must be informed of the original arrangement.

I turned the page.

The final paragraph was short.

And if they have made her believe she was merely an addition to the family, tell her the truth: she was the reason I made the arrangement in the first place.

I lowered the letter.

“What arrangement?”

Richard didn't answer immediately.

Claire had gone pale.

“Claire?”

She shook her head.

“Don't.”

“Don't what?”

“Don't ask him.”

“Why?”

She looked at Richard.

“You promised.”

Richard's face hardened.

“I promised your grandfather.”

“That isn't what I meant.”

“I know.”

My mother stepped forward.

“Claire, enough.”

My sister turned toward her.

“You don't understand what happens if she knows everything.”

I stood.

“Then tell me.”

Claire looked at me.

For once, there was no superiority in her expression.

Only fear.

“Our grandfather didn't just leave you money.”

“What else?”

“He left you voting rights.”

I stared at her.

“In the company?”

She nodded.

“How much?”

Richard answered.

“Twenty percent.”

The room seemed to tilt.

My father owned the largest portion.

My mother owned another.

Claire had shares.

But twenty percent in my name was enough to change the balance.

“Why did nobody tell me?”

“Because your father wanted control,” Richard said.

“And you allowed that?”

“I was required to administer the trust, not interfere in every family dispute.”

“But now?”

“Now the terms have been violated.”

Claire whispered, “That's why Dad wanted you out of the business.”

I looked at her.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“You let me believe I didn't matter.”

Her eyes filled.

“I thought I was protecting myself.”

“That isn't an answer.”

She looked down.

“My engagement to Daniel depends on the company.”

I understood.

Not everything.

But enough.

Daniel's family wanted the merger.

My father's company needed the Vale connection.

And my sister's position depended on both.

My existence wasn't merely embarrassing.

It was inconvenient.

I had voting power they couldn't control.

Richard took the letter from my hand.

“There is one more thing.”

“What?”

He turned it over.

A second sheet had been attached to the back.

I hadn't noticed it.

He unfolded it.

“This was written separately.”

He read silently.

Then his expression changed.

“What?”

He handed it to me.

The first line was addressed directly to Richard.

If Sophie ever asks why I trusted you with her future, tell her about the night her father came to my office.

I stopped breathing.

“My father?”

Richard nodded.

“What happened?”

Richard folded the paper.

“I think you should hear this from him.”

“No.”

My voice surprised even me.

“No more.”

I looked at my mother.

“No more decisions made for me.”

Then at Claire.

“No more explanations after the fact.”

Finally, I looked at Richard.

“You said my grandfather prepared for this.”

“He did.”

“Then tell me what happened.”

Richard studied me for a long moment.

“The night your father came to your grandfather's office, he demanded access to your trust.”

“Why?”

“Because the company was nearly insolvent.”

I stared at him.

“Nearly?”

Richard nodded.

“When?”

“Three years ago.”

I thought about that period.

My father had told everyone the company was expanding.

He had bought a new house.

Claire had started planning her engagement.

And I had been encouraged to accept a promotion at my small firm instead of taking a position in the family business.

Everything suddenly looked different.

Richard continued.

“Your grandfather refused.”

“What happened next?”

“Your father threatened to expose the trust publicly.”

My mother covered her mouth.

Claire whispered, “Dad wouldn't.”

Richard looked at her.

“He did.”

Silence.

“Then why didn't Grandpa stop him?”

“Because he died two months later.”

My stomach dropped.

I had always been told my grandfather died peacefully in his sleep.

Richard's expression remained solemn.

“He did die in his sleep.”

I exhaled.

“But before that,” he continued, “he changed the trust.”

I waited.

“He added a condition.”

“What condition?”

Richard looked directly at me.

“You cannot inherit full control merely because you are his granddaughter.”

I frowned.

“Then what?”

“You must choose whether you want it.”

“That makes no sense.”

“It does if you understand him.”

Richard stepped closer.

“He knew your family would eventually put you in a position where accepting control would make you the villain and refusing it would make them comfortable.”

I looked at the letter.

“So what did he want me to do?”

Richard's answer was quiet.

“Decide for yourself.”

Behind him, Claire began to cry.

I turned toward her.

She wiped her cheeks quickly.

“Why are you crying?”

She didn't answer.

“Claire.”

She looked at me.

“Because I know what Dad did after Grandpa died.”

My chest tightened.

“What did he do?”

She swallowed.

“He didn't just hide the trust.”

She looked toward the hallway.

“He changed the company records.”

Richard's expression hardened.

“What records?”

Claire's voice dropped to a whisper.

“The ones showing where the money went.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: Claire Finally
