still.

“Claire,” he said, “what exactly did your father change?”

She shook her head.

“I don't know everything.”

“You know at me.

“I was trying to protect you.”

I stood.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

My voice was quieter than I expected.

“But every this hour?”

“Yes.”

Daniel looked at Richard.

His expression changed.

“What happened?”

Richard didn't answer.

I did.

“We found evidence that my father may have moved company money through shell companies.”

Daniel stared at me.

“What?”

Claire grabbed his sleeve.

“Daniel, not here.”

He pulled his arm away.

“Claire, what are you talking about?”

She looked frightened.

“Just trust me.”

He laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“You're asking me to trust you while telling me nothing.”

I had seen that expression before.

It was the same one I had worn for years.

The difference was that Daniel had never been trained to accept silence as an answer.

Richard stepped between them.

“Daniel, come with us.”

Daniel looked at his father.

“Why?”

“Because this may involve your family.”

The four of us left through the side entrance.

The night air was cold enough to clear my head.

Claire drove.

I sat beside her.

Richard and Daniel followed in another car.

For several minutes, neither of us spoke.

Then Claire said, “I'm sorry.”

I watched the road.

“For what?”

“For how I introduced you.”

“That isn't new.”

“I know.”

“Then why apologize now?”

She tightened her hands around the steering wheel.

“Because I thought if I made you look insignificant, nobody would ask about you.”

I turned toward her.

“And that worked?”

“For years.”

The answer was painfully honest.

I looked out the window.

“What changed?”

“Grandpa's lawyer called Dad last year.”

Richard had never mentioned that.

“What did he want?”

“He told Dad the trust review was coming.”

“And Dad?”

“He panicked.”

The pieces continued to move.

I remembered my father suddenly insisting that I attend more family dinners.

The unexpected invitations.

The questions about my career.

The strange concern over whether I had savings.

At the time, I had assumed he was finally making an effort.

Now I wondered whether he had been measuring how much I knew.

Claire pulled into the underground garage beneath her apartment building.

We took the elevator upstairs.

Her apartment was immaculate.

Nothing looked disturbed.

She crossed to a bookshelf and removed three books.

Behind them was a narrow compartment.

She pulled out a black folder.

My pulse quickened.

“You kept it here?”

“I didn't know where else.”

Richard opened the folder.

Inside were photocopies.

Bank statements.

Invoices.

Corporate registration documents.

A list of transfers.

He examined the first page.

“Where did you get this?”

“I copied it from Dad's office.”

“When?”

“Two years ago.”

“Why?”

Claire looked at me.

“Because I was afraid.”

I picked up one of the statements.

The account belonged to a company with a harmless name.

But the receiving account was in another jurisdiction.

The amounts were enormous.

“Who authorized these?”

Richard pointed to a signature.

My father's.

My hands went cold.

Daniel took the page.

“That can't be right.”

“Why?”

“Because that account doesn't appear in the company records.”

Richard nodded.

“That is the problem.”

He turned another page.

Then another.

His expression changed.

“What?”

He placed a document on the table.

It was an old transfer authorization.

The date was eight months after my grandfather's death.

I read the name of the beneficiary.

It was my trust.

I looked at Richard.

“What does that mean?”

“It means someone attempted to move money through your trust.”

“Did they succeed?”

“I don't know.”

He continued searching.

Then he found another page.

His face hardened.

“They did.”

The room seemed to contract around us.

“How much?”

He looked at the figure.

“Thirty-eight million.”

Claire covered her mouth.

Daniel stared at the papers.

I couldn't speak.

My grandfather had left me a trust.

My father had tried to use it.

But that wasn't the worst part.

The transaction had been reversed.

“Why?”

Richard pointed to the date.

“Someone stopped it.”

“Who?”

He looked at me.

“Your grandfather.”

“That was after he died.”

Richard nodded.

“Exactly.”

No one moved.

“How could he stop it after his death?”

Richard looked through the documents again.

Then he found the answer.

“He had established an automatic safeguard.”

I stared at him.

“He expected your father to try.”

My heart began pounding.

“What else did Grandpa know?”

Richard's answer was immediate.

“Apparently, more than any of us realized.”

Claire sat down.

“There was something else.”

I turned.

“What?”

She looked at Richard.

“I never told Dad.”

“Tell me.”

“There was a second folder.”

“Where?”

“In the old house.”

Richard frowned.

“What second folder?”

“The one Grandpa kept in his study.”

I stood.

“Then we're going there.”

Daniel looked at his watch.

“It was sold.”

I froze.

“What?”

“My father sold the house three years ago.”

Richard's eyes narrowed.

“To whom?”

Daniel gave him the name.

Richard's face changed.

“That property wasn't sold.”

“What do you mean?”

“It was transferred.”

“To a company.”

“Whose?”

Richard looked at me.

“Yours.”

I stared at him.

The room went silent.

My grandfather hadn't merely left me a trust.

He had left me a property.

And someone had been keeping it hidden.

<a
