My hands were cold despite the warmth inside the car.

“What did my grandfather know?” I asked.

Richard kept his eyes on the road.

“I don't know stared through the windshield.

“That doesn't make sense.”

“It will.”

The police had already been contacted.

Richard had given them the location and explained that there might be a firearm inside the house.

No one knew whether my father intended to use it.

That uncertainty was enough.

When we reached the outside.

Claire stood beside me.

“You should know something,” she said.

“What?”

“I lied to you.”

I turned.

“About what?”

“The money.”

She looked down.

“I knew more than I told you.”

“How much?”

“I knew Dad was moving money.”

My chest tightened.

“When?”

“Before Grandpa died.”

I stared at her.

“You knew?”

“I suspected.”

“That isn't the same thing.”

“I found statements.”

“You said you found them two years ago.”

“I found some then.”

“How many?”

She closed her eyes.

“Enough.”

Anger rose in me.

“You watched him did.”

That stopped me.

Claire wiped her face.

“Dad told me that if I ever spoke, he would make sure you lost everything.”

“He couldn't.”

“I didn't know that.”

Neither of us spoke.

After a moment she said, “That's why I became what I became.”

I looked at her.

“What does that mean?”

“I learned to stay useful.”

The answer was so simple that it hurt.

She had learned to survive in the same family that had taught me to disappear.

Different strategies.

Same source.

Richard came outside.

“Your father has been taken into custody for questioning.”

I nodded.

“Did he open the letter?”

Richard held an envelope.

“No.”

I looked at it.

“Why?”

“He couldn't open it.”

“Why not?”

Richard turned it over.

There was a second seal.

A small embossed mark.

My grandfather's initials.

“He needed a code.”

I frowned.

“What code?”

Richard looked at me.

“Yours.”

I took the envelope.

Inside was a small card.

Four words.

The first place you were free.

I knew immediately.

My grandfather's study.

The old house.

The first summer after my parents had sent me there because Claire wanted the guest room.

I remembered sitting beneath the oak tree.

I had been eighteen.

My grandfather had asked me what I wanted to become.

I had told him I didn't know.

He had said, “Good. Don't let anyone answer for you.”

I entered the date.

The second seal released.

My hands trembled.

I opened the letter.

Sophie,

If you are reading this, your father has finally reached the point where protecting the family from him would only protect him from consequences.

I stopped.

Richard looked away.

I continued.

I need you to know that I did not create your trust because I believed your father was evil. I created it because I discovered he was willing to make reasonable decisions for himself while convincing everyone else they were sacrifices for the family.

My throat tightened.

The letter explained the transfers.

My father had begun moving company money years before.

At first, he had used the funds to cover losses.

Then he had begun concealing those losses.

Each solution required another deception.

The company wasn't failing because of one reckless decision.

It was being slowly hollowed out.

Then came the part that shocked me most.

My grandfather had confronted him.

My father had admitted everything.

But he had asked for time.

He promised to restore the money.

My grandfather agreed.

Not because he trusted him.

Because he wanted to protect the employees.

The company supported hundreds of families.

My grandfather had hoped my father would correct his behavior.

He hadn't.

Instead, he had created the appearance that the company was stronger than it was.

The trust was the safeguard.

And I was its beneficiary.

Then I reached the final page.

My grandfather had written that my mother knew.

My heart sank.

But he also wrote something else.

She was afraid, Sophie. Do not confuse fear with innocence, but do not confuse fear with guilt either.

I looked at my mother through the glass doors of the police vehicle.

She had arrived.

She stood alone beside the driveway.

The letter continued.

Your sister will make mistakes. She will disappoint you. She may even hurt you. But she has spent years believing that obedience was the only way to keep this family from breaking apart.

I looked at Claire.

She was crying quietly.

Then came the final instruction.

Do not punish them for being afraid. But do not allow their fear to decide your future.

I lowered the letter.

For the first time that night, I understood.

My grandfather had never wanted me to destroy my family.

He wanted me to stop allowing my family to destroy me.

Richard waited.

“What will you do?” he asked.

I looked toward the house.

“Open the records.”

“All of them?”

“All of them.”

“And the company?”

I folded the letter.

“I'll take control long enough to find out what my father did.”

Richard nodded.

“And after that?”

I looked at Claire.

“That will be my decision.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: I Walked Into the Boardroom With My Father’s Records in My Hands, and the People Who Had Ignored Me Suddenly Had to Hear My Voice

Richard's words followed me all the way to the car.
