waited.

“You kept it because you knew I'd care.”

“Yes.”

“That isn't the same thing.”

“No.”

“But next time, tell me.”

“I will.”

I got into the car.

He closed the door.

Then walked around to the driver's side.

On the drive home, he asked,

“Did Theo make you roar?”

I smiled.

“Eventually.”

“What did you sound like?”

I gave him my best dinosaur growl.

He laughed so hard he nearly missed the turn.

For a few minutes, everything felt light.

Then my phone rang.

The number was unfamiliar.

I answered.

“Hello?”

A woman's voice said,

“Is this Dani?”

“Yes.”

“My name is Melissa.”

I sat upright.

“Okay.”

“I work at the visitation center.”

My heart tightened.

“Is Theo okay?”

“He's fine.”

“Then what is it?”

There was a pause.

“I need to ask you something about Julian.”

I looked at my husband.

He was driving.

His expression was relaxed.

“What's wrong?”

“Nothing is wrong.”

Melissa lowered her voice.

“But I think you should know why he really started coming.”

I frowned.

“I already know.”

“No.”

She paused.

“You know why he told you.”

My hand tightened around the phone.

“What does that mean?”

“I've worked there for years.”

Her voice became careful.

“I remember the first day Julian came in.”

“When was that?”

“Before Theo.”

“How long before?”

“About three months.”

I stared at the road.

“Why?”

Melissa hesitated.

“He came in asking about someone.”

“Who?”

She didn't answer immediately.

Then she said,

“Lily.”

My heart stopped.

The name I hadn't spoken in years.

The little girl with purple ribbons.

The folded drawing.

The window.

I looked at Julian.

He was still driving.

He hadn't heard.

“Why was Julian asking about Lily?”

Melissa took a breath.

“Because he wanted to know whether she was still alive.”

My entire body went cold.

“What?”

“I don't know what happened after that.”

“But you remember him asking?”

“Yes.”

“Why would he ask about a child I knew fourteen years ago?”

“I don't know.”

I looked at Julian again.

The man who remembered everything.

The man who had started volunteering because of something I said.

The man who had never mentioned Lily by name.

Melissa continued.

“There was something else.”

“What?”

“He had a photograph.”

“What kind of photograph?”

“A little girl.”

My fingers began shaking.

“Was it Lily?”

“I couldn't be certain.”

“What did she look like?”

“Purple ribbons.”

The world seemed to stop.

I couldn't breathe.

Melissa whispered,

“Dani, I think Julian has known more about what happened to that little girl than he's ever told you.”

The call ended.

I lowered the phone slowly.

Julian glanced toward me.

“Who was that?”

I stared at him.

For the first time since the missing phone had been found, I wasn't thinking about Theo.

I wasn't thinking about the visitation center.

I wasn't thinking about a secret good deed.

I was thinking about a six-year-old girl I had believed I would never hear about again.

And the husband sitting beside me had apparently been looking for her.
