another page.

A transfer order.

Lily's placement had been changed.

I read the name.

Thomas Mercer.

I looked up.

“Thomas.”

Julian took the page.

“That's him.”

“No.”

I pointed.

“It's not the Thomas we involved in the custody transfer.

And he had the same first name as the man who found Daniel's car.

Two Thomases.

One family.

One case.

Too many coincidences.

We searched faster.

A photograph.

A receipt.

A handwritten note.

Then Julian found a folder labeled Accident.

Inside was the police report.

I read it.

Vehicle lost control.

Road conditions wet.

Driver deceased.

No evidence of criminal activity.

No second vehicle it.

He had described the black sedan.

He had given a partial license plate.

Then the statement ended.

No follow-up.

No investigation.

Just a handwritten note:

Witness unavailable for further interview.

I looked at Julian.

“What does that mean?”

“I don't know.”

Then I noticed the date.

The witness statement was dated three days after the accident.

Thomas had remembered the car.

Someone had written it down.

Then nothing happened.

I felt angry.

“How does this disappear?”

Julian didn't answer.

We kept searching.

Finally, I found a letter.

It was from Robert Hale.

To Ruth Mercer.

The handwriting was formal.

I read it aloud.

“I advise you not to pursue further action regarding Daniel's death.”

I stopped.

“Why?”

The next paragraph explained.

The family court had already transferred custody.

Any criminal inquiry could complicate Lily's placement.

The safest course was silence.

I looked at Julian.

“Safe.”

He nodded.

“That's what everyone keeps him.”

“Yes.”

“Then why would his son be watching us?”

“I don't know.”

Julian found another envelope.

Inside was a photograph of a black sedan.

The same one.

A license plate was visible.

I whispered the numbers.

Julian immediately took a photograph of the plate with his phone.

Then he looked at me.

“This is enough to identify the vehicle.”

“Whose was it?”

“We'll find out.”

The next document answered part of the question.

The vehicle was registered to Robert Hale.

My stomach tightened.

“The lawyer.”

“Yes.”

I sat down.

So the black sedan belonged to the man who handled my grandmother's case.

But that didn't prove he was driving.

It didn't prove he hit Daniel.

It didn't prove anything beyond ownership.

I wanted to know more.

We found one final document.

A handwritten note from Daniel.

The paper was stained.

The handwriting rushed.

I read:

Ruth says Hale knows what happened.

I stopped.

Julian took the paper.

Below it:

If anything happens to me, don't left the storage unit carrying copies of the documents.

Thomas was waiting.

When he saw the folder, he looked relieved.

Then I showed him the photograph of the black
