program.

A little girl with purple ribbons.

A folded drawing.

A window.

I had never known she was connected to me.

I had never known my grandmother had taken her in.

I had never known she had spent years wondering whether my grandmother had chosen one granddaughter over another.

And I had never known my husband had been quietly something.

Julian hadn't simply been hiding where he went every Thursday.

He had been following a trail that led straight into my family's past.

And somewhere at the end of that trail was a woman named Lily, waiting to decide whether she could forgive a family she believed had forgotten her.

The next morning, Julian and I drove an hour north.

Neither of us spoke much.

The folder sat between us.

The green dinosaur rested on the dashboard.

And in my pocket was a photograph of a six-year-old girl with purple ribbons in her hair.

When we finally turned onto a quiet residential street, Julian slowed the car.

“There.”

I looked toward the house.

A looked at me.

I opened the car door.

My legs felt weak.

Julian stayed beside me.

We walked toward the porch.

The woman stared at my face.

I stared at hers.

There was something familiar.

Not the eyes.

Not the mouth.

Something harder to identify.

The shape of the smile she was trying not to make.

She whispered,

“You look like her.”

“Like who?”

“Ruth.”

I couldn't answer.

She stepped down from the step.

For several minutes, she didn't speak.

I sat beside her.

Julian remained a few feet away.

Finally, Lily whispered,

“I hated you for
