worked in finance, and I trusted him.

We had joint accounts.

Savings.

Investment accounts.

A mortgage.

Insurance.

Nothing unusual.

Or so they?”

“I don't know.”

I scrolled further.

Some of the money had moved into an account I didn't recognize.

The account was under a company name.

I photographed the information.

Tom leaned closer.

“What is that?”

“I've never heard of it.”

I felt suddenly cold.

The next morning, I called our bank.

The representative wouldn't discuss every detail over the phone without additional verification.

I understood.

I wasn't asking for special treatment.

I was asking for certainty.

I made an appointment.

Then I went home.

Michael was already there.

He was in the watched him.

He had no idea what I had heard.

No idea what I had found.

No idea that the woman standing across the kitchen was no longer the wife who automatically believed him.

He poured coffee.

“You want some?”

“No.”

His hand paused.

“Are you angry?”

I looked at him.

“Should I be?”

He smiled carefully.

“I don't know.”

That answer stayed with me.

I spent the rest of the morning behaving normally.

The children needed breakfast.

One needed help finding a missing shoe.

The other couldn't find a school project.

Ordinary life continued around a secret that had already destroyed the shape of my marriage.

At noon, Michael received a call.

He stepped outside.

I watched through the window.

His shoulders tightened.

He spoke quietly.

Then he looked toward the house.

Toward me.

I stepped away from the window before he could see me watching.

When he came back inside, I asked casually, “Everything okay?”

“Work.”

“Busy?”

“Very.”

I nodded.

He kissed my forehead.

I almost flinched.

That afternoon, I met with the bank.

The account was real.

The company was real.

But the money had been moved without my authorization.

Not all of it.

Enough to matter.

Enough to explain why Michael and Rachel had been discussing leaving.

The representative printed several pages.

I stared at the transaction history.

The oldest transfer had occurred nearly eight months earlier.

The most recent was only three days ago.

Michael had been preparing.

This wasn't an impulse.

It was a plan.

I called Tom from the parking lot.

“I found it.”

“What?”

“The take money with them.

That evening, Michael came home early.

He looked tired.

He put his keys down.

“Can we talk?”

My heart jumped.

“About what?”

“Yesterday.”

I stared at him.

He sighed.

“I know you saw what
