She doesn't know how.”

I stared at the screen.

Rachel looked ashamed.

“I used to think that meant you were weak.”

I handed the phone nodded.

“I wish I had understood strength differently.”

I didn't tell her what strength was.

She had to discover that herself.

Later that year, Tom invited me to dinner.

Rachel was there.

It was awkward for the first few minutes.

Then we began talking about ordinary things.

Work.

The children.

A restaurant we'd all liked before everything happened.

Nobody mentioned the anniversary party.

Nobody needed to.

The past sat quietly between us.

After dinner, Tom walked me to my car.

“I wanted to thank you.”

“For what?”

“For telling the truth.”

I smiled.

“You did most of the work.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“I collected evidence.”

“You did.”

“But you chose not to protect Michael.”

I understood.

That had been the real turning point.

I could have found excuses.

I could have blamed Rachel.

I could have pretended the kiss meant nothing.

I could have accepted another apology.

Instead, I had chosen to believe what the evidence showed me.

That choice changed everything.

A year after the anniversary party, I returned to the restaurant where Michael and I had celebrated our tenth wedding anniversary.

I almost didn't go.

Then I decided I wanted to.

Not with another man.

Not to prove anything.

I went alone.

I ordered dinner.

I sat by the window.

The same kind of evening light came through the glass.

For a moment, I remembered Michael sitting across from me.

He had held my hand.

He had said he loved me.

At the time, I believed him.

I don't regret believing him.

Trust isn't foolish just because someone abuses it.

The fault belongs to the person who chooses to exploit it.

That realization had taken me a long time.

When dinner arrived, I smiled.

Not because the memory no longer hurt.

Because it no longer controlled me.

I walked home afterward.

The city was quiet.

I thought about the person I had been at the anniversary party.

She had believed she needed answers from everyone else.

Now I knew I only needed honesty from myself.

A few days later, Diane sent me the final notice confirming that all remaining financial matters connected to the case had been resolved.

I read it once.

Then deleted the email.

There was nothing left to preserve.

The documents could remain in storage.

The memories could remain in my head.

But neither needed to occupy my daily life.

That evening, I found my daughter drawing at the kitchen table.

“What are you drawing?”

“Our house.”

I looked at the picture.

The house had crooked windows and an enormous sun above it.

“Where's Dad?”

She pointed to a tiny figure outside the fence.

“He lives somewhere else.”

I looked at her.

“Why did you put him outside?”

She shrugged.

“Because this is our house.”

I didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

I kissed the top of her head.

“Yes,” I said quietly.

“It is.”

That night, after the children went to bed, I stood at the window.

The same yard.

The same porch.

The same trees.

But there was no fear attached to them anymore.

I didn't need to watch the driveway.

I didn't need to check Michael's phone.

I didn't need to wonder where he was.

I didn't need to wonder whether Rachel was calling.

I had spent too long living in anticipation of betrayal.

Now I was learning how peaceful life could feel when there was nothing left to uncover.

<a
