in a charcoal coat, holding a leather briefcase against her side.

Beside her was a man I had never seen before.

He carried a thin folder and wore the expression of someone who preferred facts to conversation.

Mara looked past me.

“Good morning, Claire.”

“Good morning.”

Vanessa appeared behind my shoulder.

Her smile disappeared.

“Who is that?”

I stepped aside.

“Mara Levin.”

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

Daniel had clearly never mentioned the name.

Mara entered without waiting for an invitation.

The man followed.

“I’m David Mercer,” he said. “I’m here on behalf of Ms. Levin’s office.”

Vanessa folded her arms.

“Is there a problem?”

Mara looked at her.

“That depends on what you were told.”

Vanessa’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

I closed the door.

The movers had stopped carrying boxes.

One of them looked at me.

“Should we continue?”

I shook my head.

“Please wait outside for a few minutes.”

They exchanged glances and carried the remaining boxes back toward the van.

Vanessa watched them leave.

Then she turned to me.

“What is going on?”

I looked at the crib visible through the open doorway upstairs.

“I'm wondering the same thing.”

She frowned.

Mara placed her briefcase on the console.

“Claire asked me to come before anyone moved personal property into this residence.”

Vanessa gave a short laugh.

“Daniel owns this house.”

“No,” Mara said.

The room went quiet.

Vanessa looked at me.

Then at Mara.

Then back at me.

“What?”

Mara opened her briefcase.

“Daniel does not own this friend.”

“I know.”

“Then you know why I’m here.”

Mara removed several documents.

“I know why Mr. Vance told you that you were coming here.”

Vanessa took a step forward.

“What exactly are you implying?”

“I’m not implying anything.”

Mara placed the first document on the table.

“I’m clarifying ownership.”

Vanessa looked down.

The deed was visible.

My name was printed clearly.

Her eyes moved across the page.

“That could be outdated.”

“It was certified last week.”

She looked at me.

“Claire?”

I didn't answer.

Mara placed another document beside the deed.

“And this establishes the property as separate inherited property.”

Vanessa swallowed.

“Daniel said you both owned it.”

“He was mistaken.”

She stared at me for several seconds.

Then she laughed.

It wasn't a natural laugh.

It was the sound people make when reality has become inconvenient.

“This is ridiculous.”

“No,” Mara said quietly. “It is very straightforward.”

Vanessa picked up the document.

Her fingers tightened around the paper.

“Daniel told me I could stay here.”

“I know.”

“For six months.”

“I know.”

“He said this was already agreed.”

“It wasn't.”

Her eyes flashed.

“Then why did you let me come inside?”

I looked toward the staircase.

“Because I wanted you to arrive.”

She froze.

Mara glanced at me.

She knew exactly what I meant.

Vanessa didn't.

“What does that mean?”

“It means you brought more than a baby into my house.”

Her expression hardened.

“I don't know what you're talking about.”

I walked to the kitchen and returned with the folder.

I placed it beside Mara's documents.

Vanessa saw the photographs.

Her face went pale.

She didn't touch them.

“You've been following us?”

“No.”

“Then where did you get those?”

“I saw you.”

Her eyes moved to Daniel’s photograph.

The one outside the restaurant.

Then the hotel.

Then the parking garage.

She looked at me as though I had betrayed her.

The irony nearly made me laugh.

“You can't do this.”

“Do what?”

“Accuse me of something because you’re jealous.”

I looked at her.

“Jealous?”

She lifted her chin.

“Daniel and I are friends.”

“Friends don't usually enter hotels together after midnight.”

Her lips parted.

No answer came.

Mara closed the folder.

“We aren't here to argue about the relationship.”

Vanessa looked relieved.

“We're here because financial records indicate transfers from a joint marital account into accounts connected to you.”

The relief vanished.

“What?”

Mara slid a statement across the table.

Vanessa stared at it.

“I don't know anything about that.”

“You received payments.”

“I didn't ask for them.”

“That isn't the issue.”

“I never told Daniel to send me money.”

I looked at her.

“Did you return it?”

She didn't answer.

Mara watched her carefully.

“That's what I thought.”

The baby began crying upstairs.

Vanessa immediately turned.

“My baby.”

She hurried toward the staircase.

I followed more slowly.

The sound became louder as we reached the nursery.

Vanessa picked up the baby and began rocking her.

For a moment, the anger disappeared from her face.

She looked exhausted.

Human.

Young.

And I felt something complicated move through me.

Not forgiveness.

Not sympathy.

Just recognition that the child had done nothing wrong.

Vanessa noticed me watching.

“She needs me.”

“I know.”

“You don't understand what I've been through.”

“Maybe not.”

She held the baby closer.

“I didn't plan any of this.”

I looked at the expensive crib.

The designer stroller.

The twelve suitcases.

The apartment payment on the spreadsheet.

“You planned enough to move into a married woman's house.”

Her face tightened.

“I thought Daniel had talked to you.”

“He did.”

“And?”

“He told me I would take care of you.”

Vanessa looked away.

Something in her expression suggested she had expected exactly that.

The baby quieted.

Downstairs, Mara called my name.

I left the room.

Daniel arrived twenty minutes later.

His car stopped hard in the driveway.

He entered through the front door without knocking.

“Claire?”

His eyes found Mara.

Then David.

Then the papers.

Then Vanessa.

His face changed.

“What's this?”

Mara stood.

“Good morning, Mr. Vance.”

Daniel looked at me.

“What is she doing here?”

I almost smiled.

“Apparently, she has a name.”

“Claire.”

“You told Vanessa she could move into the house.”

“Yes.”

“You knew I didn't agree.”

“We discussed it.”

“No. You announced it.”

His jaw tightened.

Mara picked up the deed.

“Mr. Vance, you also represented to Vanessa that you had authority to offer her a six-month residence in this property.”

Daniel stared at the paper.

“This is between my wife and me.”

“It stopped being only between you when you began making promises concerning property you do not own.”

He turned toward me.

“Did you call her?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I needed legal advice.”

His expression darkened.

“You've been planning this.”

“Yes.”

He looked at Vanessa.

She stared at the floor.

Then he looked at the photographs.

Silence filled the foyer.

I watched him realize, piece by piece, that I had known for weeks.

Finally he said, “We need to talk privately.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“Claire.”

“You had eleven years to talk to me honestly.”

His face hardened.

“What do you want?”

I looked at him.

“That's the first honest question you've asked me in a long time.”

<a
