I had been flying commercially for three years. I thought I understood what responsibility meant."

Grandma gave a small, humorless smile.

"Then you met Frank."

Gene nodded.

"I met Frank."

He looked toward the window.

"I didn't know him before that flight. Not really. We had crossed paths at the airport. Maintenance crews and flight crews knew each other by face more than by name."

My grandfather had spent his career around airplanes.

I had always imagined him as someone who belonged in the background of aviation.

Gene made it sound different.

"He was the kind of mechanic who didn't just fix things," Gene said. "He listened."

Grandma smiled faintly.

"He always listened."

"To engines," Gene said. "To people too."

He looked at me.

"That day, he noticed something."

"What?"

Gene hesitated.

"One of the aircraft systems had given a warning."

I looked toward the cockpit.

"Was the airplane unsafe?"

"No."

The answer came immediately.

"Your grandfather never believed it was unsafe.
