The passengers were gone, the cleaning crew had not yet entered, and the engines had finally fallen silent. For the first time since we had boarded in Boston, there was no mechanical vibration beneath our feet.

The silence made everything feel more serious.

Grandma stared at the envelope.

"Why did Frank want you to find me?"

Danny answered before Gene could.

"Because he knew what was going to happen."

My grandmother looked at him sharply.

"How could he know?"

"He didn't know everything."

Danny pulled out the old photograph from his jacket.

"But he knew something was wrong."

Gene sat across the aisle.

"Frank had noticed irregularities in the maintenance records before the flight. A serial number. When it's removed or installed, the maintenance record should follow it. Frank believed someone had taken serial numbers from legitimate components and reused them in paperwork."

"To make old parts look new?"

"That's one possibility."

"Was it proven?"

"No."

Gene's answer was immediate.

"And that's important."

He leaned back.

"We found enough to know Frank had a legitimate concern. We never found enough to prove who was responsible."

Grandma looked at the envelope.

"Then what does this have to do with me?"

Gene hesitated.

"Everything."

He opened the envelope.

Inside was a photocopy of a handwritten note.

The handwriting was unmistakably Grandpa's.

Grandma took it.

Her lips moved as she read.

I watched her face.

First confusion.

Then recognition.

Then something close to fear.

"What does it say?" I asked.

She didn't answer.

I waited.

Finally, she handed it to me.

The note was short.

Ruth,

If they tell you I was confused, don't believe them.

I know what I saw.

The records are not where they should be.

Gene knows where to look.

If he cannot reach you, wait.

Do not trust anyone who tells you to forget this.

My hands went cold.

At the bottom was one final sentence.

I will come home if I can.

Grandma closed her eyes.

"He thought he was coming home."

Gene nodded.

"He did."

"Then why didn't you tell me?"

"I tried."

"That's not enough."

"I know."

Her voice broke.

"You should have kept trying."

Gene looked down.

"I should have."

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Grandma asked the question I had been thinking.

"Who told my daughter not to let you contact me?"

Gene hesitated.

"Her name was Elaine Mercer."

Grandma stared.

"That was the airline's legal representative."

Gene nodded.

"She came to your house."

"When?"

"Three days after Frank's funeral."

My grandmother's face changed.

I looked at her.

"You remember?"

"I remember a woman coming to the house."

"What did she say?"

Grandma swallowed.

"She told me Frank had been under enormous stress."

Gene looked down.

"She said his death had nothing to do with the maintenance issue."

"Did she mention the records?"

Grandma shook her head.

"No."

"Did she ask for anything?"

Grandma was silent.

Then she whispered, "The silver wings."

I looked at the pin.

"What?"

"She asked me to give them to her."

"Why?"

"She said they belonged to the airline."

Gene's expression darkened.

"They didn't."

Grandma's fingers closed around the pin.

"I refused."

"Good."

"She became angry."

Gene nodded.

"She was worried Frank had left something behind."

Grandma looked at the old boarding pass.

"He had."

"Yes."

She stared at the faded paper.

"I kept it."

"You did."

"All these years."

"And that may be why we finally found the missing connection."

Danny stepped closer.

"What connection?"

Gene looked at him.

"The serial number."

I looked between them.

"What serial number?"

Gene pointed toward the old ticket.

"Frank wrote one on the back."

I turned the boarding pass over.

The handwriting was faint.

I had seen it before but assumed it was part of the note.

Now I looked closer.

A sequence of numbers sat beneath Danny's name.

I read them aloud.

"7-4-1-9-6."

Gene nodded.

"That's the serial number of the component Frank was investigating."

Grandma looked stunned.

"Why would he write it there?"

"Because he knew the ticket would stay with you."

"Why not write it somewhere else?"

Gene gave a tired smile.

"Because he trusted you more than he trusted the system."

That sentence stayed with me.

Grandma had carried that ticket for twenty-seven years.

Not because she understood what it meant.

Because it had been the last thing Frank had placed in her hands.

Danny looked toward the terminal windows.

"We found the component."

My grandmother looked up.

"Where?"

"At a museum."

"Which museum?"

"Not here."

He paused.

"California."

Grandma's eyes narrowed.

"What kind of museum?"

"An aviation museum."

Gene stood.

"The component was donated years ago."

"By whom?"

"We don't know."

Grandma looked at the envelope.

"Then why bring me here?"

Gene answered quietly.

"Because the museum contacted us last month."

"About what?"

"They found a handwritten label attached to the component."

Grandma's face went pale.

"What did it say?"

Gene looked at her.

"Frank's name."

She stopped breathing.

I reached for her hand.

Gene continued.

"And beneath his name were two words."

Grandma whispered, "What words?"

"Find Ruth."
