6 – The Museum Had Preserved the Part for Years, but the Message Attached to It Suggested Frank Expected Someone to Come Looking

The drive from the airport took almost an hour.

Grandma sat beside me in the back seat.

Danny drove.

Gene sat in front.

Nobody talked much.

The city passed outside the windows in fragments of glass, concrete, palm trees, hills, and distant water.

Grandma held the wooden box on her lap.

She had refused to put it in the trunk.

Inside were the silver wings Gene had kept for twenty-seven years.

Every few minutes she opened the lid.

Not to look at them.

Just to make sure they were still there.

Eventually Danny spoke.

"My mother still remembers him."

Grandma looked up.

"Your mother?"

"She was the one who met Frank after the flight."

"The boy's mother."

"Yes."

"Does she remember me?"

Danny smiled.

"She remembers your name."

Grandma looked out the window.

"I never met her."

"No."

"She must have hated me."

Danny frowned.

"Why?"

"Because her son came home with a dead man's wings."

Danny shook his head.

"She knew Frank saved me."

Grandma lowered her eyes.

"Then why didn't she ever contact me?"

"She tried."

My grandmother looked at him.

"What?"

"My mother wrote you."

"When?"

"Several times."

"Where did the letters go?"

Danny looked toward Gene.

"That's one of the things we're trying to understand."

The same uneasy silence returned.

I stared at Danny's hands on the steering wheel.

"How many letters?"

"Four."

"Did my grandmother receive any?"

"No."

Grandma closed her eyes.

"Someone stopped them."

Gene turned from the passenger seat.

"That's what we believe."

The museum appeared beyond a line of trees.

It was smaller than I expected.

A long concrete building with a curved roof and several restored aircraft displayed outside.

Danny parked near the entrance.

A man in his seventies waited beneath the awning.

He wore a museum badge.

When he saw Grandma, he walked toward her.

"Mrs. Walsh?"

"Yes."

"My name is Peter."

He offered his hand.

She took it.

"I've been waiting for you."

Grandma looked at Gene.

"How did you know I was coming?"

Peter smiled.

"Because your husband told us you would."

She stiffened.

"He told you?"

"Not directly."

Peter turned toward the building.

"Come inside."

The museum smelled of polished wood, old metal, and dust.

Aircraft engines sat behind glass.

Photographs covered the walls.

Some showed pilots.

Others showed mechanics.

Grandma stopped at one.

A group of maintenance workers stood beside an airplane.

She touched the glass.

"That's Frank."

I moved closer.

There he was.

My grandfather.

Young.

Laughing.

His hair darker than in the photograph at Grandma's house.

I had never seen him like that.

Grandma smiled.

"He hated photographs."

"He didn't hate that one," Peter said.

She turned.

"How do you know?"

"He donated the photograph."

"Frank?"

Peter nodded.

"Years before the flight."

Grandma stared at him.

"Why would he donate a photograph?"

"Because the museum used to be a training center."

Peter looked at the picture.

"Frank helped establish the maintenance program."

I looked at Grandma.

She seemed to be discovering pieces of her husband's life that had existed without her knowledge.

Peter led us farther inside.

They passed an old engine.

Then a cockpit.

Then a section of aircraft fuselage.

Finally, Peter stopped at a locked glass display.

Inside was a metal component.

It looked ordinary.

A cylindrical assembly with scratches along one side.

A small placard identified it.

Grandma stepped closer.

"That's it."

She didn't know how she knew.

But she did.

Peter unlocked the case.

"Your husband identified this part twenty-seven years ago."

"Where did you get it?"

"An estate donation."

"Whose estate?"

Peter looked at Gene.

"That is complicated."

Grandma's expression hardened.

"Nothing is complicated anymore."

Peter sighed.

"The man who donated it was named Thomas Vale."

Gene's face changed.

"Vale."

I looked at him.

"Who is that?"

"Former maintenance supervisor."

Grandma looked at the component.

"Was he involved?"

Gene shook his head.

"He died before we could interview him."

"How?"

"Natural causes."

She looked skeptical.

"Of course."

Peter placed a magnifying glass beside the display.

"The label was attached to the component when it arrived."

"What label?"

Peter removed a small envelope from a drawer.

He opened it.

Inside was a piece of paper.

Grandma took it.

The writing was old.

But unmistakable.

Frank's handwriting.

Her hand began trembling.

She read aloud.

"If this part ever leaves my hands, don't return it to the airline."

Gene closed his eyes.

Grandma continued.

"Keep it somewhere people can see it."

She stopped.

I read the next line.

"If Ruth ever comes here, tell her I was right."

Grandma looked at Peter.

"When did you receive this?"

"Eight years ago."

"Eight years."

Peter nodded.

"Why didn't you contact me?"

"We didn't know who Ruth was."

Grandma pointed at the note.

"My name is there."

"Yes."

"But we had no address."

Gene interrupted.

"We found the museum records last year."

Peter nodded.

"And then we began searching."

Grandma stared at the note.

"Why did it take a year to find me?"

"Because your name had changed."

I frowned.

"Her name?"

"Your grandmother's surname was Walsh," Peter said. "But the old airline database listed her under a different spelling."

Grandma looked confused.

"I never changed it."

Peter shrugged.

"Records can be wrong."

Gene looked at the component.

"Sometimes records are wrong because people make mistakes."

He looked at me.

"Sometimes they are wrong because someone wants them wrong."

The room fell silent.

Peter turned toward a desk.

"There is more."

He opened a drawer.

Inside was a thick folder.

"We found this behind the original display case."

Gene took it.

"What is it?"

"Copies of correspondence between Frank and the museum."

Grandma looked at me.

"I didn't know he had written to them."

"Neither did we," Peter said.

Gene opened the first page.

The date was February 28, 1999.

Two weeks before the flight.

He read silently.

Then his face changed.

"What?"

He handed the page to me.

It was a letter.

Frank had written about a maintenance discrepancy.

But near the bottom, he mentioned something else.

I have reason to believe someone is using old records to conceal where certain components originated.

My concern is not only the parts.

My concern is who benefits when the history disappears.

I looked up.

"This is bigger than the airplane."

Gene nodded.

"That's what Frank suspected."

Grandma looked at the page.

"Did he know who was doing it?"

"No."

"Did he suspect someone?"

"Yes."

"Who?"

Gene turned the page.

A name had been written in the margin.

Elaine Mercer.

Grandma's face went blank.

The same woman who had come to her house after Frank's funeral.

The airline's legal representative.

The woman who had told her not to ask questions.

Grandma whispered her name.

"She knew."

Gene nodded.

"Probably."

"Probably?"

"We have evidence she knew about the records."

"Did she know Frank had copied them?"

"We don't know."

Grandma turned toward me.

"She came to my house."

"I know."

"She told me his death was simple."

Gene nodded.

"She may have been trying to keep it simple."

I looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because if Frank's concerns became public, the airline would face an investigation."

"Into the maintenance records."

"Yes."

"Did anyone ever get punished?"

"No."

Grandma looked toward the aircraft outside.

"Then Frank died for nothing."

Danny spoke from behind us.

"No."

Everyone turned.

He had been standing near the entrance.

"He didn't."

Danny walked toward us.

"He gave me a reason to live."

Grandma looked at him.

"He gave me a reason to fly."

Danny touched the wings on his uniform.

"And now he's giving you a reason to finish what he started."

Grandma stared at him.

"I am eighty years old."

"I know."

"I don't know anything about maintenance records."

"You don't need to."

"Then what do I need?"

Danny looked at the folder.

"To remember what he told you."

Grandma frowned.

"He never told me anything."

Danny pointed toward the old boarding pass.

"He did."

I unfolded it again.

The writing was faint.

I read the final lines.

Then I noticed something I hadn't seen before.

There was a tiny mark beside Frank's signature.

A circle.

Inside it were three letters.

R.M.H.

I showed Gene.

His expression changed immediately.

"Where did you get that?"

"On the ticket."

He stared at it.

Then at Grandma.

"That's not a signature."

"What is it?"

Gene took a slow breath.

"It's a location code."

"For what?"

He looked at Peter.

Peter went pale.

"The archive."

Grandma stood.

"Which archive?"

Gene answered.

"The original airline maintenance archive."

I looked at him.

"Where is it?"

He hesitated.

"Destroyed."

Grandma's voice became firm.

"Then why do you look frightened?"

Gene looked at the code again.

"Because R.M.H. wasn't the archive's name."

"What was it?"

He looked at Danny.

Then at me.

"It was the initials of the man who kept the private copy."

Grandma's face tightened.

"Who?"

Gene's answer was almost a whisper.

"Robert Mercer Holt."

She stared at him.

"Mercer."

Gene nodded.

"Elaine Mercer's father."

<a
