Thomas rubbed his hands together.<\/p>\n

Gene leaned forward.<\/p>\n
"Who else?"<\/p>\n
Thomas looked at him.<\/p>\n
"The person who controlled the money."<\/p>\n
Gene frowned.<\/p>\n
"Who?"<\/p>\n
Thomas looked at Elaine.<\/p>\n
She whispered, "Richard."<\/p>\n
"No."<\/p>\n
He shook his head.<\/p>\n
"Richard controlled the operation. Someone else controlled Richard."<\/p>\n
Grandma's eyes narrowed.<\/p>\n
"Who?"<\/p>\n
Thomas didn't answer.<\/p>\n
The cassette still sat on the table.<\/p>\n
Danny replayed the final seconds.<\/p>\n
Frank's voice came first.<\/p>\n
Then the sound of a door.<\/p>\n
Then footsteps.<\/p>\n

I listened carefully.<\/p>\n

"What is he saying?"<\/p>\n
I increased the volume.<\/p>\n
The voice became clearer.<\/p>\n
"You don't understand what you're touching."<\/p>\n

Then Frank laughed.<\/p>\n
A short, bitter laugh.<\/p>\n
"You're afraid."<\/p>\n
The voice replied.<\/p>\n
"I'm protecting the company."<\/p>\n
Grandma looked at Gene.<\/p>\n
"Who was that?"<\/p>\n
Gene's face had gone pale.<\/p>\n
"I know that voice."<\/p>\n
"Who?"<\/p>\n
He didn't answer.<\/p>\n
I looked at the waveform on the recorder.<\/p>\n
The conversation continued.<\/p>\n
Frank said, "You can't bury this forever."<\/p>\n
The other man replied, "I don't need forever."<\/p>\n
A pause.<\/p>\n
"I only need you to disappear."<\/p>\n
Grandma stood.<\/p>\n
"Who?"<\/p>\n
Gene finally spoke.<\/p>\n
"Harold Mercer."<\/p>\n
Elaine froze.<\/p>\n
"My grandfather."<\/p>\n
Gene nodded.<\/p>\n
"Yes."<\/p>\n
Thomas closed his eyes.<\/p>\n
Grandma looked at Elaine.<\/p>\n
"Your grandfather?"<\/p>\n
Elaine shook her head.<\/p>\n
"I didn't know."<\/p>\n
Thomas spoke quietly.<\/p>\n
"He ran the legal department before you."<\/p>\n
Gene nodded.<\/p>\n
"He was the one who controlled the internal investigations."<\/p>\n
Grandma's face tightened.<\/p>\n
"Then Elaine inherited everything from him."<\/p>\n
"Yes."<\/p>\n
"And she didn't know?"<\/p>\n
"No."<\/p>\n
Elaine looked at Thomas.<\/p>\n
"You knew."<\/p>\n
"I knew pieces."<\/p>\n
"You lied to me."<\/p>\n
"I was trying to keep you alive."<\/p>\n
She stared at him.<\/p>\n
"Alive?"<\/p>\n
Thomas nodded.<\/p>\n
"My grandfather threatened anyone who tried to expose him."<\/p>\n
"Did he threaten Frank?"<\/p>\n
"Yes."<\/p>\n
"Did he kill him?"<\/p>\n
Thomas shook his head.<\/p>\n
"No."<\/p>\n
Grandma waited.<\/p>\n
"Then who did?"<\/p>\n
Thomas looked at the floor.<\/p>\n
"Nobody."<\/p>\n
Her expression changed.<\/p>\n
"What?"<\/p>\n
"Frank died of a heart attack."<\/p>\n
Gene nodded.<\/p>\n
"But the circumstances around his death were manipulated."<\/p>\n
Thomas looked at Grandma.<\/p>\n
"His death wasn't planned."<\/p>\n
"The cover-up was."<\/p>\n
Silence.<\/p>\n
Grandma sat down.<\/p>\n
She looked devastated.<\/p>\n
"Why?"<\/p>\n
Thomas answered.<\/p>\n
"Because Frank had discovered something that would have destroyed the entire network."<\/p>\n
"What?"<\/p>\n
"Not the stolen parts."<\/p>\n
Everyone looked at him.<\/p>\n
"The money."<\/p>\n
Gene frowned.<\/p>\n
"What money?"<\/p>\n
"The payments."<\/p>\n
Thomas pointed to the bank statement.<\/p>\n
"Those payments weren't meant to make Frank look guilty."<\/p>\n
"Then what were they?"<\/p>\n
"They were payments to people who had access to his identity."<\/p>\n
Grandma looked at the statement.<\/p>\n
"How many?"<\/p>\n
"Dozens."<\/p>\n
"Over how long?"<\/p>\n
"Twenty years."<\/p>\n
Gene's expression hardened.<\/p>\n
"Then Frank's identity was being used for twenty years after his death."<\/p>\n
Thomas nodded.<\/p>\n
"Yes."<\/p>\n
I looked at Elaine.<\/p>\n
"Did you know?"<\/p>\n
She shook her head.<\/p>\n
"No."<\/p>\n
"Then who did?"<\/p>\n
Thomas looked at her.<\/p>\n
"Your grandfather."<\/p>\n
Elaine closed her eyes.<\/p>\n
Grandma stared at the table.<\/p>\n
"He used Frank's name."<\/p>\n
"Yes."<\/p>\n
"Why?"<\/p>\n
"Because Frank had become useful."<\/p>\n

"People trusted him."<\/p>\n

The basement fell silent.<\/p>\n
Thomas looked toward the photograph of Frank.<\/p>\n
"That was the difference."<\/p>\n
He reached into his coat again.<\/p>\n
This time he removed a small envelope.<\/p>\n
"I kept this."<\/p>\n
Grandma stared.<\/p>\n
"What is it?"<\/p>\n

"His name."<\/p>\n
Danny frowned.<\/p>\n
"My name?"<\/p>\n
"Your father spent years believing Frank's death had been meaningless."<\/p>\n
Danny's face tightened.<\/p>\n
"He knew?"<\/p>\n
