basement faster than I expected.

It curled along the ceiling first, then dropped in thick layers.

Danny kicked the door.

Nothing.

Gene tried the handle again.

Locked.

"There's another exit," Thomas said.

"Where?"

"Behind the shelves."

He ran toward the back wall.

Grandma followed.

I grabbed her arm.

"You stay with me."

She pulled free.

"I'm not helpless."

"I know."

"Then don't treat me like I am."

We moved together.

Thomas shoved aside two shelves.

Behind them was a narrow wooden door.

He pulled it open.

Cold air rushed in.

A stone staircase led upward.

"Go," he said.

Elaine pushed Grandma toward the stairs.

Danny carried the microfilm.

Gene carried the cassette and several files.

I followed with the remaining documents.

Thomas stayed behind.

"Come on!"

He shook his head.

"Someone has to make sure the door stays open."

"Thomas!"

"Go."

Elaine turned back.

"You don't get to die now."

He looked at her.

"I've waited twenty-seven years."

"Then wait another twenty."

She grabbed his arm.

He finally followed.

We emerged into the yard.

The house was already filling with smoke.

A window on the upper floor shattered.

Flames appeared behind it.

Grandma stood in the grass.

She looked at the house.

"Who did this?"

Thomas answered.

"Someone who knew what was inside."

Gene pulled out his phone.

"I've called the fire department."

Danny looked at the road.

A black sedan was disappearing around the bend.

"I saw the driver."

Thomas turned.

"Who?"

Danny shook his head.

"Couldn't see the face."

Elaine looked at him.

"License plate?"

"Part of it."

He gave the numbers.

Gene wrote them down.

Grandma held the wooden box against her chest.

"What about the archive?"

Gene looked back.

"Most of it will be gone."

She closed her eyes.

"Then we save what we have."

The fire department arrived minutes later.

We stood across the road as firefighters entered the house.

The flames spread through the upper floors.

Smoke covered the sky.

Grandma never looked away.

After nearly an hour, the fire was contained.

The house was badly damaged.

The basement remained partially intact.

Gene returned with a firefighter.

"Some boxes survived."

Grandma nodded.

"Take them."

The firefighter looked at her.

"Ma'am, they're evidence now."

Gene stepped forward.

"I'll handle it."

The firefighter nodded.

We spent the next two hours outside sorting what could be recovered.

Most of the paper records were ruined.

Some were soaked.

Others were burned along the edges.

But the cassette survived.

The microfilm survived.

Several photographs survived.

And one ledger.

The payment ledger.

Gene held it carefully.

"This is enough to establish a chain."

Elaine looked at him.

"Not enough for a conviction."

"No."

"But enough for an investigation."

"Yes."

Grandma looked at the ledger.

"Then investigate."

Gene nodded.

"That's what we're going to do."

Thomas sat on the curb.

His coat was covered in ash.

Grandma walked toward him.

He looked up.

"You were right."

"About what?"

"You said Frank wanted you found."

Grandma sat beside him.

"He did."

"He knew I would eventually tell you."

"Why?"

Thomas looked at the burning house.

"Because he knew I was a coward."

Grandma didn't respond.

Thomas continued.

"I should have spoken twenty-seven years ago."

"Yes."

"I was afraid of my grandfather."

"Yes."

"I was afraid of losing my career."

"Yes."

"I was afraid of becoming like him."

Grandma looked at him.

"And did you?"

Thomas shook his head.

"No."

She waited.

"Because I couldn't forget Frank."

Grandma looked away.

"Neither could I."

Thomas swallowed.

"I watched your family from a distance."

She turned sharply.

"What?"

"Not in a dangerous way."

"That isn't comforting."

"I know."

"Why?"

"Because I wanted to know whether you were all safe."

Grandma stared.

"You could have called."

"I didn't deserve to."

"That wasn't your decision."

Thomas nodded.

"I know that now."

Danny approached.

He held a small plastic evidence bag.

Inside were the silver wings.

"The microfilm is secure."

Grandma smiled.

"Good."

Danny sat beside her.

"I have something for you."

"What?"

He opened his hand.

A small photograph.

It showed Frank holding Danny's hand.

The picture was blurry.

But Frank's face was clear.

Grandma touched it.

"Where did you get this?"

"My mother."

"When?"

"She found it after I told her I had finally met you."

Grandma looked at him.

"You told her?"

"Yes."

"What did she say?"

Danny smiled.

"She cried."

Grandma laughed softly.

"She must have."

"She said she always wondered whether you'd forgiven yourself."

Grandma's smile disappeared.

"Forgiven myself?"

"For not being on the airplane."

Grandma looked down.

"I never blamed myself."

Danny shook his head.

"She said Frank blamed himself."

Grandma looked up.

"What?"

"He told her before the flight that he wished he'd made you travel more."

She laughed through tears.

"That sounds like him."

Danny smiled.

"He said he wanted to take you to California."

Grandma looked at the runway of the airport visible in the distance.

"He did."

"He wanted to show you the coast."

She touched the photograph.

"He never got to."

Danny nodded.

"Now you have."

Grandma looked toward me.

"I did."

The next morning, federal investigators arrived.

They took possession of the ledger, the microfilm, the cassette, and the surviving documents.

They photographed the basement.

They documented the fire.

They interviewed all of us separately.

The investigation would take months.

Maybe longer.

Nobody promised anything.

But for the first time, the evidence existed outside the control of the people who had hidden it.

Gene sat with Grandma after the interviews.

"There's something else."

She looked at him.

"What?"

"The airline's archives contain a passenger record from the original flight."

"Frank's?"

"Yes."

"What does it say?"

Gene handed her a copy.

The seat number was listed.

34A.

Beside it was a handwritten note.

Passenger assisted child in 34B.

Grandma touched the page.

"He really was there."

Gene nodded.

"Yes."

She smiled.

"I never doubted him."

"But you doubted yourself."

She looked at him.

"Sometimes."

Gene lowered his voice.

"I should have called you sooner."

"Yes."

"I should have ignored Elaine's instructions."

"Yes."

"I should have kept the original report."

"Yes."

He nodded.

"I deserve that."

Grandma smiled faintly.

"You're forgiven."

Gene looked surprised.

"Just like that?"

"No."

She folded the paper.

"It took twenty-seven years."

Gene laughed.

"Fair enough."

Later that afternoon, Grandma asked me to take her to the airport.

We drove without Danny or Gene.

She wanted to go alone with me.

At the terminal, we sat by the same windows where we had waited in Boston.

She looked out at the airplanes.

"I thought I'd be afraid."

"Are you?"

"No."

"Why?"

She smiled.

"Because I finally understand what Frank was doing."

"What?"

"He wasn't trying to teach people not to be afraid."

She looked at me.

"He was teaching them what to do while they were afraid."

I nodded.

She reached into her purse.

The silver wings were gone.

The original pin remained.

She removed it and placed it in my palm.

"What is this?"

"Yours."

"Grandma."

"You've carried me through this."

"I only bought the ticket."

"No."

She closed my fingers around the pin.

"You gave me a reason to get on the airplane."

I looked at the wings.

"What will you do now?"

She smiled.

"Fly."

I laughed.

"Where?"

"Anywhere."

She looked through the window.

"Maybe California again."

"You just came from California."

"I know."

"Then why go back?"

She smiled.

"Because Frank wanted to see the coast."

She stood.

"And I haven't finished the trip."

Click here to continue reading: PART 12: Twenty-Seven
