6 – The Secret Martin Claimed I Had Hidden From My Son Was Older Than His Marriage, and It Changed Why He Had Chosen Emma

I didn't sleep.

Neither did Daniel.

At three in the morning, he was still sitting at our kitchen table, scrolling through messages while my wife sat across from him.

I had moved into the study.

The photograph Martin had sent remained on my desk.

Two younger men stood outside a small brick office.

Martin looked confident.

I looked tired.

Between us was a sign bearing the name of the company we had built together.

My wife entered quietly.

“You should come upstairs.”

“I can't.”

She sat beside me.

“You're afraid.”

I looked at her.

“Yes.”

She waited.

I had spent twenty-two years refusing to say that word about Martin.

Not because I wasn't afraid of him.

Because admitting it meant admitting he had hurt me more deeply than I had allowed anyone to see.

“What did he mean?” she asked.

“I don't know.”

“You do.”

I looked back at the photograph.

“There was something else.”

“What?”

“I never told you.”

Her expression changed.

“Why?”

“Because I thought it was over.”

She waited.

“When Martin left the company, there was a missing account.”

“How much?”

“Thirty-two thousand dollars.”

She frowned.

“I thought the lawsuit was about more than that.”

“It was.”

“What happened to the money?”

“I recovered most of it.”

“Most?”

I nodded.

“There was still a balance.”

“Where did it go?”

“I don't know.”

She studied me.

“Was Martin responsible?”

“I believed he was.”

“But?”

“But I couldn't prove it.”

She looked toward the hallway.

“Does Daniel know?”

“No.”

“Why would Martin bring that up now?”

“I don't know.”

She stood.

“Then find out.”

Morning came without either of us noticing.

At seven, Daniel and I drove to the bank.

The account review took almost two hours.

Several transfers had been made from the wedding account.

Some were legitimate.

Some weren't.

But one transfer caught my attention.

It had been sent to a company called Vale Advisory.

The amount was thirty-two thousand dollars.

Exactly the amount missing from my old company account.

I stared at the screen.

Daniel noticed.

“What?”

I pointed.

He read it.

“Thirty-two thousand.”

“Yes.”

He looked at me.

“Dad.”

“I know.”

The bank officer explained that the transfer had occurred six weeks earlier.

The recipient account had been opened under a corporate name.

The account holder information required additional authorization to release.

But the pattern was clear.

Money had moved.

From the wedding.

To a company connected to Martin.

And the amount matched the old missing balance.

Daniel looked at me.

“You said that money disappeared twenty years ago.”

“It did.”

“Then why is it moving now?”

I had no answer.

We left the bank with printed records.

Outside, Daniel stopped.

“Do you think Martin took it back then?”

“I always believed he did.”

“Then why didn't you tell anyone?”

“I didn't have proof.”

He looked at me.

“Maybe you should have told me.”

I nodded.

“You're right.”

That was difficult to say.

But it was true.

I had spent years believing silence protected my family.

Perhaps silence only protected old wounds.

We drove home.

My wife had already begun organizing the paperwork.

She spread the documents across the dining table.

“Look at these dates.”

I leaned over.

The first payment to Vale Advisory occurred shortly after Emma met Martin.

The second came after the wedding budget increased.

The third happened three days before the wedding.

Daniel stared at the dates.

“She was transferring money to him while asking Dad for more.”

“Yes.”

He sat down.

“Why?”

I looked at the final transfer.

“Because he was threatening her.”

Emma arrived that afternoon.

She came alone.

No wedding dress.

No makeup.

No smile.

Just a plain coat and swollen eyes.

Daniel opened the door.

She looked past him.

“I need to talk to your father.”

“You can talk to both of us.”

She nodded.

We sat in the living room.

She placed a folder on the table.

“I brought everything.”

I looked at it.

“What is it?”

“The truth.”

She pushed it toward me.

Inside were bank records.

Messages.

Copies of emails.

And one handwritten note.

My wife picked it up.

“What is this?”

Emma swallowed.

“Martin wrote it.”

I read it.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

The message was short.

He had promised to help her father.

Then he had demanded access to information about my finances.

When Emma hesitated, he threatened to expose her family's debt.

But there was more.

He had told her that if she could get me to increase the wedding budget, he could move enough money to cover what her family owed.

Daniel stared at her.

“So you used us.”

Emma cried.

“Yes.”

“You used my father.”

“Yes.”

“You lied about my mother.”

“Yes.”

“And you pushed her.”

Emma lowered her head.

“Yes.”

The room became quiet.

My wife spoke.

“Why?”

Emma looked at her.

“I was angry.”

“At me?”

“At everyone.”

She wiped her face.

“My father spent years pretending everything was fine. My mother blamed me whenever bills came. Martin offered a solution.”

“A terrible one,” I said.

“I know.”

“You still chose it.”

“I did.”

Daniel stood.

“Why marry me?”

Emma looked at him.

The question seemed to break something inside her.

“I loved you.”

He didn't move.

“I did,” she repeated. “I still do.”

“But you knew about my father's money.”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Before I met him.”

Daniel stared at her.

“How?”

“My father knew him.”

I looked up.

“Your father knew Martin?”

She nodded.

“They had business dealings years ago.”

Everything shifted.

The connections were older than I had realized.

Martin had not entered our lives through Emma.

He had entered through her family.

I asked, “Did he arrange your relationship with Daniel?”

Emma shook her head immediately.

“No.”

“Did he tell you to marry him?”

“No.”

“Did he know you were marrying my son?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Three months before the wedding.”

I leaned back.

That explained the timing.

The wedding planning had become aggressive soon afterward.

The expenses had grown.

The requests had started.

Martin had recognized an opportunity.

But there was one question left.

“Why the final eighty-four thousand?”

Emma looked at me.

“Because Martin said it would finish everything.”

“Everything?”

“The debt.”

“Whose?”

“My father's.”

“And what did you owe him?”

She looked down.

“Nothing.”

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Emma took a breath.

“Martin wasn't helping my father.”

She opened another document.

It was a payment schedule.

The debt had been sold.

To Martin.

He had purchased the family's debt from another lender.

Then he used it to control Emma.

My wife whispered, “He owned the debt.”

Emma nodded.

“And he knew you would do almost anything to protect your parents.”

“Yes.”

Daniel looked sick.

“Why didn't you come to me?”

“I was ashamed.”

“You could have told me.”

“I thought you'd leave.”

“Maybe I would have.”

She nodded.

“I know.”

Daniel sat down.

For several minutes, no one spoke.

Then I asked the question I had been avoiding.

“What does Martin want from me?”

Emma looked at me.

“He wants the company.”

I frowned.

“I don't own that company anymore.”

“You own the land.”

I stared at her.

The old office property.

The one asset I had kept after selling my share.

It had become valuable over the years.

Martin had tried to buy it twice.

I had refused.

“How did he know?”

“He knew you wouldn't sell.”

I looked at my wife.

She understood immediately.

“That was the plan.”

I nodded.

Martin couldn't take the property directly.

But if he could pressure my family into debt, he could force a sale.

The wedding had been one part of the pressure.

Emma had been another.

My son had been the leverage.

And I had been the target.

Daniel looked at me.

“What do we do?”

I answered carefully.

“We stop reacting.”

He nodded.

“We document everything.”

My wife said, “And the police?”

I looked at the folder.

“Not yet.”

Daniel frowned.

“Why?”

“Because we don't know everything.”

Emma looked at me.

“I do.”

I turned toward her.

“What?”

She took one last document from her bag.

“This is why Martin was so certain you would pay.”

She placed it on the table.

It was a copy of an old agreement.

My signature appeared at the bottom.

I stared at it.

I hadn't seen that document in twenty-two years.

It was the agreement that had allowed Martin access to the company's reserve account.

And beside my signature was another name.

My father's.

Daniel leaned closer.

“What is that?”

I couldn't answer.

My father had been dead for fifteen years.

He had never mentioned Martin again.

Never mentioned the account.

Never mentioned the agreement.

And suddenly I understood why Martin had written:

He never told you everything.

This wasn't only about the wedding.

It was about something that had started before my son was born.

<a
