study.

Daniel followed.

My wife remained in the dining room with Emma.

Neither of us spoke until I placed the document beneath the desk lamp.

The paper was yellowed around the edges.

The signature was mine.

The date was twenty-two years old.

Daniel pointed to the second signature.

“Grandpa.”

“Yes.”

“What did he sign?”

I read the agreement again.

It was a guarantee.

My father had guaranteed a loan Martin had taken to expand our company.

I had signed as a secondary guarantor.

If the company failed, the liability could pass to us personally.

Daniel stared at the document.

“Did the loan get paid?”

“Yes.”

“Then why does Martin care?”

I turned the page.

There was an amendment.

My stomach tightened.

“This.”

“What?”

“The loan wasn't fully paid.”

Daniel looked confused.

“I thought you said it was.”

“I thought it was.”

The amendment showed that part of the debt had been converted into a long-term obligation.

The final maturity date was years later.

But the document had been assigned.

Transferred.

The creditor was no longer the original bank.

It was a private holding company.

I recognized the name.

Vale Holdings.

Daniel stared at me.

“Martin.”

I nodded.

He sat down.

“So he bought the debt.”

“Yes.”

“Years ago?”

“Yes.”

“Then why wait?”

I looked at the document.

“Because the debt was worthless while I was protected by the company.”

“And now?”

“Now the property is worth more.”

Daniel understood.

“He wants the land.”

“Yes.”

“Then why use Emma?”

“Because he needed leverage.”

I looked toward the dining room.

“She gave him access.”

Daniel shook his head.

“She didn't know everything.”

“No.”

“But she knew enough.”

“Yes.”

He sat silently.

Then he asked, “What about the thirty-two thousand?”

I opened the bank records.

“That amount was probably the old balance.”

“But you said you recovered most of it.”

“I did.”

“Then where did this come from?”

“I don't know.”

We returned to the dining room.

Emma was sitting with my wife.

She looked exhausted.

I placed the agreement in front of her.

“Did Martin show you this?”

She nodded.

“Months ago.”

“Why?”

“He said it proved you owed him.”

“It doesn't.”

“I didn't know that.”

“Did you tell him that?”

“I told him I didn't understand.”

He had probably counted on that.

I looked at Daniel.

“This is why he was confident.”

Emma whispered, “He said your father had hidden the debt from you.”

I felt something twist in my chest.

My father and I had never been especially close during the final years of his life.

There had always been things we didn't discuss.

I had assumed they were ordinary family regrets.

Maybe they weren't.

My wife reached for my hand.

“Could he have known about this?”

“I don't know.”

Daniel asked Emma, “Did Martin tell you why he wanted Dad's property?”

“He said it was valuable.”

“That's all?”

“He said the land was the reason he waited.”

I looked at her.

“Waited for what?”

“For the right time.”

“What changed?”

She hesitated.

“Your age.”

The room went quiet.

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?”

“He said you would eventually want to retire.”

That sentence struck me.

The property had been part of my retirement plan.

I had intended to sell it in a few years.

Martin knew that.

He had probably been waiting for the price to rise.

The wedding wasn't his original plan.

It was simply the opportunity that appeared when Emma entered the family.

I asked Emma, “Did Martin ever meet Daniel before you?”

“No.”

“Did he ever contact him directly?”

“Not until tonight.”

Daniel showed us the messages.

Emma read them.

Her face tightened.

“He's angry.”

“Why?”

“Because you found out.”

I nodded.

“What happens next?”

She looked at me.

“He'll pressure you.”

“How?”

“I don't know.”

“You do.”

She hesitated.

“He has something else.”

“What?”

“I don't know what it is.”

My wife asked, “Then why are you afraid?”

Emma looked down.

“Because he said if I failed, he would release it.”

Daniel's face hardened.

“Release what?”

Emma shook her head.

“I never saw it.”

I looked at her.

“Then why believe him?”

“Because he showed me one page.”

“What page?”

She took a breath.

“A document with your name.”

I felt cold.

“What kind?”

“I don't know.”

I stood.

“Where is it?”

“Martin has it.”

“What did it say?”

She closed her eyes.

“Something about a transfer.”

My mind raced.

A transfer of what?

Property?

Shares?

Debt?

The old company?

Then I remembered something.

Twenty-two years earlier, after the dispute with Martin, I had signed several documents under pressure.

Some were settlement papers.

Some were property releases.

One had concerned my father's guarantee.

I had never kept copies of everything.

Martin might have.

Daniel asked, “Can he actually take Dad's land?”

“Not without a valid claim.”

“What if he has one?”

“We find out.”

That evening, I contacted an attorney I trusted.

I sent him photographs of the agreement.

He called within an hour.

“This is unusual.”

“Can Martin enforce it?”

“Not from this document alone.”

“What else would he need?”

“A valid assignment, proof of the remaining obligation, and evidence that the debt wasn't extinguished.”

My wife asked, “Could the debt still exist?”

The attorney paused.

“Possibly.”

I closed my eyes.

“How do we know?”

“Records.”

“From twenty-two years ago?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“County records, banking archives, corporate filings.”

Daniel looked at me.

“We'll get them.”

The attorney continued.

“And don't contact Martin.”

“I won't.”

“Also, don't transfer or sell the property.”

“I wasn't planning to.”

“Good.”

After the call ended, Daniel looked at me.

“You're going to fight him.”

I shook my head.

“I'm going to understand what he has first.”

My wife smiled faintly.

“That is how you fight.”

Later that night, Daniel stayed at our house.

Emma left alone.

Before she walked to her car, she turned toward my wife.

“I am sorry.”

My wife nodded.

“I believe you are.”

Emma looked at me.

“I don't expect forgiveness.”

“Good.”

She nodded.

“I only want you to know that I did love him.”

I answered quietly.

“I believe that too.”

She began crying.

Then she left.

Daniel watched from the window.

“She ruined everything.”

My wife stood beside him.

“She made terrible choices.”

He nodded.

“But she wasn't the only one.”

My wife looked at him.

“No.”

He looked toward me.

“Dad?”

“Yes?”

“Did you ever hide anything from me?”

The question landed harder than I expected.

I could have lied.

Instead, I said, “Yes.”

He waited.

“I hid how badly Martin hurt me.”

“Why?”

“Because I didn't want you growing up believing your father had been defeated.”

Daniel looked at me.

“You weren't defeated.”

“I lost something.”

“What?”

“Trust.”

He nodded slowly.

“I understand.”

The next morning, my attorney called.

He had found an old corporate record.

The original debt had indeed been transferred.

But not to Martin.

To another company.

A company that no longer existed.

The debt had been settled eighteen years ago.

My attorney sent me the document.

I stared at it.

“Then Martin has nothing.”

“Not exactly.”

“What do you mean?”

“There was a second agreement.”

“What second agreement?”

“The one attached to the property.”

I felt my stomach drop.

“Can you send it?”

“I already did.”

I opened the attachment.

The agreement was dated two years after Martin left the company.

And at the bottom was my signature.

But I knew immediately something was wrong.

The signature looked like mine.

The date was mine.

The document was something I had never seen.

Daniel looked over my shoulder.

“What is it?”

I whispered, “A property option.”

“What does that mean?”

I read the first paragraph.

If I ever defaulted on a specified obligation, Martin would have the right to purchase the land at a fixed price.

The fixed price was absurdly low.

Far below its current value.

Daniel looked at me.

“Did you sign this?”

“No.”

“But that's your signature.”

“I didn't sign this.”

My wife came closer.

“How can you prove it?”

I stared at the document.

Then I noticed the final page.

There was a witness signature.

A name I recognized.

A man who had died twelve years ago.

My father's old accountant.

And beside his signature was a date.

Three years after his death.

I looked at Daniel.

“Now we know.”

“What?”

“This document is forged.”

Click here to continue reading: PART
