Daniel checked the windows twice and then the driveway. Ethan stayed beside me.

I kept looking at the picture.

The sedan was parked beneath the oak trees across from the house.

The photograph had been taken from a distance.

Close enough to identify the car.

Far enough that the person behind the camera had not been seen.

“They're watching us,” Ethan said.

“Yes.”

“Why now?”

“Because we found something.”

He nodded.

His hand closed around mine.

“We should stopped at a small private airfield.

I recognized it immediately.

It was where I had completed one of my earliest civilian flight certifications after leaving the Navy.

“You knew about this place?”

Daniel nodded.

“I've been here before.”

“Why?”

“Because Laura brought me here once.”

I looked at him.

“When?”

“Three weeks before the crash.”

He pulled into a hangar.

Inside were several small aircraft and an office at the far end.

An elderly mechanic looked up.

He saw Daniel and nodded.

Then he saw me.

His expression changed.

“Nightbird.”

The word made me stop.

He smiled faintly.

“I wondered if you'd ever come back.”

I couldn't speak.

Daniel closed the hangar door.

The mechanic started again.”

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?”

He looked at Daniel.

“You didn't tell her?”

“Not yet.”

“Tell me what?”

The mechanic sighed.

“Laura came here the night before she died.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“She was frightened.”

“Why didn't anyone tell me?”

“Because she asked us not to.”

“Us?”

He nodded.

“There were three of us.”

I looked at Daniel.

“Who else?”

“Me,” he said.

“And Evelyn Hart.”

I froze.

“Evelyn was here?”

“Yes.”

The missing intelligence officer was no longer just a name.

She had been with Laura the night before the crash.

“What happened?”

The mechanic looked toward the hangar doors.

“She brought documents.”

“What documents?”

“Shipment records.”

The same records Laura mentioned in the recording.

“Where are they?”

He pointed toward an old metal cabinet.

“Still there.”

I opened it.

Inside were several folders sealed in plastic.

The first contained Northstar shipment manifests.

The second contained maintenance discrepancies.

The third contained something unexpected.

Photographs.

I spread them across the workbench.

Laura had taken pictures of equipment.

Serial numbers.

Crates.

Vehicles.

People.

Then I saw Hale.

Standing beside Vale.

Beside them was Evelyn Hart.

And behind them, partially obscured by a doorway, was Mason.

The four people were together.

Ethan's father stared at the photograph.

“I never saw this.”

“You weren't supposed to,” I said.

He accepted that.

I found another photograph.

This one showed a crate being loaded into the black sedan.

The vehicle's license plate was visible.

Same car.

Same night.

The final photograph showed Laura.

She was standing several feet away, holding a camera.

She had taken the picture herself using a timer.

Daniel pointed to something in the corner.

A wall clock.

The time was visible.

11:47 p.m.

“The night before the crash,” I said.

The mechanic nodded.

“She left at midnight.”

“Where did she go?”

He hesitated.

“She said she was meeting someone.”

“Who?”

“She wouldn't tell me.”

I looked at Daniel.

“Was it you?”

“No.”

“Evelyn?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

The mechanic's expression hardened.

“She said she was meeting your commanding officer.”

My heart sank.

“Ethan's father?”

“No.”

“Who?”

He said the name.

“Mason.”

Daniel swore under his breath.

I stared at the photograph.

Laura had trusted Mason enough to meet him alone.

Or she had believed she had no choice.

“What happened after?”

The mechanic shook his head.

“She came back twenty minutes later.”

“Alone?”

“Yes.”

“How did she look?”

“Angry.”

“Did she say why?”

“She said Mason had lied.”

I felt the pieces move again.

“Did she leave anything here?”

The mechanic nodded.

He opened another drawer.

Inside was a small key.

He handed it to me.

“Laura told me to give this to you if you ever returned.”

I looked at the key.

“What does it open?”

He pointed toward the back wall.

A small metal locker stood there.

My hands shook as I inserted the key.

The lock opened.

Inside was a folder.

My name was on it.

Beneath my name was Laura's handwriting.

I opened it.

The first page contained a typed statement.

I read the first paragraph.

Then the second.

By the third, my breathing had changed.

Laura had written that she believed someone intended to frame me for the aircraft failure.

She named Northstar.

She named Hale.

She named Vale.

She named Mason.

But then she wrote something I had not expected.

She said she did not believe they were working alone.

I looked at Daniel.

“There's another person.”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Laura had written the name beneath a black line.

Evelyn Hart.

I stared.

The room seemed to tilt.

“You said Evelyn helped her.”

Daniel nodded.

“She did.”

“But Laura suspected her.”

“She suspected everyone.”

“No.”

I pointed to the statement.

“This is different.”

Daniel read it.

His face changed.

The mechanic stepped closer.

“What does it say?”

I looked at the final paragraph.

Laura had written that Evelyn had access to the contract records and could authorize emergency shipments.

But she had also written that Evelyn was the only person who had tried to stop the shipments.

The contradiction made my head spin.

“She wasn't accusing Evelyn,” I said.

Daniel nodded.

“She was testing her.”

“What?”

“She wanted to know whether Evelyn could be trusted.”

I looked at the statement again.

Then I saw the final line.

Laura had written:

If Nightbird returns, tell her the truth about the last flight.

My heart stopped.

“What truth?”

Daniel looked at me.

“I think you already remember.”

I closed my eyes.

The missing memory.

The door.

The voice.

The blue folder.

The black sedan.

And now—

Laura standing beside me.

She wasn't inside the aircraft.

She was on the ground.

Alive.

Talking to me.

I opened my eyes.

“I saw her after the briefing.”

Daniel nodded.

“You did.”

“I wasn't remembering wrong.”

“No.”

“She gave me something.”

“Yes.”

“What?”

“A key.”

I looked down.

The key was still in my hand.

And suddenly I understood.

Laura had not hidden the evidence from me.

She had hidden it for me.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: The Last Memory Returned in Pieces, Revealing Who Laura Trusted Before the
