She had that particular smile she wore when other people were watching—a polished little curve of the mouth that made cruelty look like confidence.

At Terminal 4, she arrived dragging two enormous suitcases behind her, a crocodile handbag tucked against one elbow and a garment bag hanging from her shoulder. She looked less like someone preparing for a flight and more like someone arriving to inspect a hotel she had already purchased.

She stopped directly in front of me.

“Take these.”

I looked at the luggage, then at her.

“Good morning to you too.”

Her expression tightened.

“Don’t start, Daniel. We’re already late.”

We weren’t late. I knew it because I had checked the departure board twice before leaving home. Our flight wasn’t boarding for another forty minutes.

But Patricia had never needed an actual emergency to make everyone around her move faster.

I picked up the larger suitcase.

It was heavier than it looked.

“Careful,” she said. “There are things in there that cost more than your car.”

I glanced at the luggage tag.

“Then maybe you should carry it.”

Her eyes narrowed.

For a second, I thought she might actually say something sharp enough to make a scene. Instead, she laughed.

It wasn’t a warm laugh. It was the kind meant to recruit strangers into an audience.

“See?” she said to the woman standing beside the self-service kiosk. “He’s always joking when he’s embarrassed.”

The woman politely looked away.

Patricia adjusted her sunglasses.

She had spent years perfecting the story she told about me. I was the son who had never quite managed to become anything. My father had apparently been generous enough to let me live comfortably, but I had supposedly squandered every advantage. Patricia liked telling people I had “a complicated relationship with ambition.”

What she never mentioned was that my father had asked me, months earlier, to keep certain parts of my life private.

I had agreed.

That agreement had become one of the most expensive misunderstandings in our family.

Patricia pointed toward the check-in area.

“Go get those tagged.”

“I thought you already checked us in.”

“I checked myself in.”

I stared at her.

She smiled.

“Economy passengers have a different line.”

There it was.

She had waited until the terminal was crowded before saying it.

I looked past her toward the first-class desks. Her boarding pass was already visible in the leather folder she carried.

Then I looked at mine.

Economy.

Patricia watched my face carefully.

“You understand, don’t you?”

“Understand what?”

“You’re flying economy.”

She lowered her voice, pretending to spare me embarrassment.

“I paid for my own upgrade. I assumed you could manage your own ticket.”

I almost laughed.

My ticket had never been economy.

I had deliberately kept it that way in her mind.

“Of course,” I said.

Her smile returned.

“That’s a mature attitude.”

She turned away before she could see the amusement on my face.

The strange thing about Patricia was that she always confused silence with surrender.

She had done it at family dinners, business gatherings, holidays, and once at my father’s birthday when she announced, in front of twelve people, that I should be grateful she had “kept me grounded.”

I had said nothing then either.

Not because she was right.

Because my father had asked me not to reveal what I knew.

I lifted her second suitcase.

“Where do you want these?”

“Check them.”

“Both?”

“Yes.”

She handed me her garment bag too.

“And this.”

I caught it before it hit the floor.

Patricia smiled.

“You’re good at this.”

I looked at her.

“At what?”

“Being useful.”

She walked toward security.

I followed with her luggage.

At the security entrance, she stopped and held out her hand.

“Your boarding pass.”

I gave it to her.

She examined it.

Then she laughed softly.

“Economy.
