8 – The Landing Was Minutes Away When the Last Piece Arrived, and It Forced Me to Question the Story I Had Believed About My Father’s Final Days

The descent began twenty minutes later.

The captain made the announcement in his usual calm voice.

Passengers straightened their seats.

Window shades opened.

The cabin filled with the small noises of preparation.

I watched the ground appear beneath the clouds.

The city looked peaceful from above.

Roads curved between buildings.

Cars moved like tiny points of light.

I wondered how many people below were carrying secrets large enough to alter their families.

Then my phone vibrated.

One final message from the attorney.

*Do not confront Patricia until you have spoken to Mr. Bennett.**

Mr. Bennett.

The man from the photograph.

My father's business partner.

I opened the attachment he had sent.

It was a scanned page from my father's private journal.

I had never seen it before.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

The entry was dated six years earlier.

My father had written about Patricia.

Not affectionately.

Not angrily.

Carefully.

He wrote that Patricia had become increasingly interested in financial decisions she had no legal authority to control.

He also wrote that she had begun asking questions about the old company.

Then came a sentence that stopped me.

*I believe she is being pressured by someone else.**

I read it twice.

Then again.

My father hadn't considered Patricia the mastermind.

He had considered her vulnerable.

That changed everything.

I continued reading.

He had discovered that Patricia's brother was deeply in debt.

Someone had been paying those debts.

The payments were not coming from the old company.

They were coming from an outside account.

My father's investigation had stopped there.

The next page was missing.

I stared at the blank space.

Then I noticed something handwritten at the bottom.

*Ask Patricia who first introduced her brother to the buyer.**

I looked toward first class.

She was sitting by the window.

Her hands were clasped tightly.

I walked toward her.

She saw me coming.

“Don't.”

“Who introduced your brother to the buyer?”

Her face went completely still.

“Your father wrote that question.”

“Yes.”

She looked down.

“I don't know.”

“Patricia.”

“I don't.”

“Then why are you afraid?”

She swallowed.

“I didn't know what they were planning.”

“Who?”

“I can't say.”

“You can.”

“No.”

The word came out almost like a plea.

I sat across the aisle from her.

“Did someone threaten you?”

She looked at me.

“Not directly.”

“Then what happened?”

She stared at her hands.

“My brother disappeared for three days.”

I said nothing.

“When he came back, he told me to sign the authorization.”

“Why?”

“He said if I didn't, they'd come after you.”

The words hit me harder than anything else.

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I don't care what you believe.”

She looked toward the window.

“I was afraid.”

“For me?”

“Yes.”

I couldn't reconcile that woman with the one who had laughed when sending me to economy.

But people could be contradictory.

Cruelty and fear could live in the same person.

“What did you sign?”

“Access documents.”

“Nothing else?”

She shook her head.

“Did you transfer anything?”

“No.”

“Did my father know?”

“Yes.”

“What did he do?”

“He told me to stay quiet.”

“Why?”

“Because he was already investigating.”

The aircraft descended lower.

A flight attendant asked everyone to return to their seats.

Patricia leaned closer.

“Your father wanted you to think he didn't trust me.”

“He didn't.”

“He trusted me with one thing.”

“What?”

“You.”

I stared at her.

She continued before I could respond.

“He told me that if anything happened to him, I was supposed to make sure you stayed away from the company until he could explain everything.”

“But he died.”

“Yes.”

“And you did the opposite.”

Her eyes filled.

“I panicked.”

“You sent me to economy.”

“I thought you were trying to take control.”

“I didn't know there was anything to take.”

“Exactly.”

She looked down.

“I thought you were pretending to be poor because you wanted access to your father's assets.”

I almost laughed.

“I wasn't pretending.”

“I know that now.”

The aircraft touched down.

The wheels struck the runway with a hard, brief vibration.

Everyone around us clapped lightly.

I didn't.

Neither did Patricia.

As the aircraft taxied toward the terminal, the captain made a final announcement.

Then he added something unexpected.

“Mr. Carter, please remain seated after arrival.”

Patricia looked at me.

“Why?”

“I don't know.”

She stared toward the cockpit.

The aircraft stopped at the gate.

Passengers began standing.

Overhead bins opened.

People reached for coats and bags.

I remained seated.

Patricia did too.

The cabin gradually emptied.

Finally, the captain appeared.

Behind him stood an older man in a dark suit.

I recognized him immediately.

Mr. Bennett.

He looked at me.

Then at Patricia.

His expression changed.

“She's here?”

Patricia stood.

“You knew I'd be here.”

Bennett shook his head.

“No.”

He looked at me.

“Your father told me never to speak to her again.”

Patricia's face drained of color.

I stood.

“Why?”

Bennett reached into his coat and removed a small envelope.

“Because after your father discovered the leak, he believed the person responsible was someone neither of us suspected.”

I took the envelope.

“Who?”

Bennett looked directly at Patricia.

Then at me.

“He thought the person feeding information to the buyer was not your stepmother.”

Patricia closed her eyes.

Bennett continued.

“He thought it was someone much closer to you.”

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

A recent one.

It showed my father standing outside a restaurant with a man I recognized.

Not Bennett.

Not Patricia's brother.

Someone else.

Someone I had trusted for years.

On the back, my father's handwriting contained only one sentence.

*If you are reading this, ask why your own attorney was paid by the buyer six months before I died.**

I stared at the photograph.

The terminal beyond the aircraft windows was crowded with people.

The flight attendants were waiting.

Patricia was silent.

Bennett watched me carefully.

And suddenly, the humiliation at Terminal 4 seemed like the smallest part of the story.

My father hadn't simply hidden his wealth.

He had hidden an entire investigation.

And someone I trusted had been inside it from the beginning.

<a
