several seconds, I could not move.

The photograph trembled slightly between my fingers.

The man standing beside my father outside the restaurant was Thomas Reed, the attorney who had handled nearly every important legal matter in our family for more than a decade.

Thomas had drafted my father's wills.

Thomas had overseen the company restructuring.

Thomas had advised me after my father's death.

Thomas had been the person I trusted whenever Patricia told me I was too inexperienced to understand what was happening.

And according to the note on the back of that photograph, Thomas had received money from the buyer six months before my father died.

I looked at Bennett.

“Where did you get this?”

“Your father gave it to me.”

“When?”

“Three weeks before he died.”

My eyes returned to the photograph.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because your father specifically instructed me not to.”

Patricia let out a quiet breath.

“So he knew.”

Bennett looked at her.

“He suspected.”

“That isn't the same thing.”

“No,” Bennett said. “It isn't.”

I turned toward Patricia.

“You knew about Thomas.”

She shook her head.

“I suspected something was wrong.”

“You knew enough to warn me.”

“I tried.”

I stared at her.

“You sent me to economy.”

Her face tightened.

“I know.”

“You handed me your luggage in front of strangers.”

“I know.”

“You told everyone I couldn't afford first class.”

“I know.”

“And now you're telling me you were protecting me?”

“I was trying to control what you knew.”

“That isn't protection.”

“No.”

She looked down.

“It wasn't.”

The admission surprised me.

Patricia had spent years refusing to acknowledge even the smallest mistake.

Now she stood inside an empty aircraft, with no audience to impress, admitting that she had made one.

Bennett walked toward the nearest seat and sat.

“We should not have this conversation in the aisle.”

The remaining crew gave us space.

I sat across from him.

Patricia remained standing.

“Start with Thomas,” I said.

Bennett nodded.

“Your father noticed payments to an account connected to Thomas's firm.”

“Legal fees?”

“That was the explanation.”

“But they weren't.”

“No.”

“What were they?”

“Consulting payments.”

I frowned.

“Consulting for whom?”

“The acquisition group.”

The words settled heavily.

I remembered every meeting.

Every document Thomas had prepared.

Every time he had advised my father to delay.

Every time he had told us the company wasn't worth saving.

Every time he had insisted that transferring the old company into my name was merely an estate-planning technicality.

He had been positioned perfectly.

He didn't need to steal anything.

He only needed to make my father believe the wrong decision was the safest one.

“Did my father confront him?”

“Not immediately.”

“Why?”

“Because he wanted proof.”

Bennett opened a leather folder.

Inside were copies of bank records, correspondence, and meeting notes.

He pushed them toward me.

I read the first page.

Thomas had received three payments.

The first was labeled consulting.

The second was listed as reimbursement.

The third had no description.

All three came from different entities.

All three ultimately traced back to the same investment group.

My stomach tightened.

“Why didn't my father expose him?”

“Because he believed Thomas wasn't working alone.”

I looked at Patricia.

She was staring at the documents.

Bennett continued.

“Your father believed someone inside the family was giving Thomas information.”

“Your brother?”

Patricia shook her head.

“My brother was involved with the acquisition group, but he wasn't the source.”

“How do you know?”

“Because your father told me.”

“Then who was?”

Bennett looked at me.

“That was the question he never answered.”

I turned another page.

There was a list of names.

Executives.

Accountants.

Assistants.

Family members.

One name had been circled.

Patricia.

I looked up.

“Why?”

“She had access.”

“To what?”

“Your father's calendar. His correspondence. His travel arrangements. His personal files.”

“That doesn't prove anything.”

“No.”

Bennett's voice remained measured.

“Your father knew that.”

Patricia finally sat down.

“He never accused me.”

“Because he thought you were being pressured.”

She looked at Bennett.

“Did he tell you that?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did he leave me out of everything?”

“Because he didn't know whether he could trust you.”

Patricia flinched.

I watched her carefully.

“Tell me about the night he changed the company ownership.”

She closed her eyes.

“It was raining.”

I waited.

“Your father called me to his office.”

“When?”

“Late.”

“Who else was there?”

“Thomas.”

My pulse quickened.

“And your brother?”

“No.”

“Bennett?”

“No.”

“Just the three of you?”

She nodded.

“What happened?”

“Your father had discovered the buyer's offer.”

“What offer?”

“To purchase the company from him.”

“He refused.”

“He didn't refuse immediately.”

I frowned.

“He considered it?”

“He pretended to.”

“Why?”

“To find out who was behind the offer.”

She looked at me.

“He told Thomas he was willing to sell.”

“But he wasn't.”

“No.”

“He was testing him.”

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

“Thomas brought documents.”

“What documents?”

“Transfer papers.”

“Were they for the company?”

Patricia shook her head.

“They were for your ownership.”

I felt the same chill I'd felt on the aircraft.

“Why?”

“Your father wanted Thomas to believe the company had already been transferred to you.”

“But it had.”

“Yes.”

“So what was the test?”

“He told Thomas the transfer hadn't happened.”

I understood.

My father had lied to Thomas.

He told him the company remained under his control.

Then he waited to see whether information about the supposed sale would reach the buyer.

Patricia continued.

“Three days later, the buyer knew.”

Bennett nodded.

“That was when your father realized the leak was inside his legal team.”

I looked at Thomas's name again.

“And he still kept him as attorney.”

“He needed Thomas close.”

“Until the end.”

“Yes.”

I looked at Patricia.

“Why did you send me to economy?”

She didn't answer immediately.

Then she said, “Because Thomas called me the night before the flight.”

My entire body went still.

“What did he say?”

“He told me you were going to meet Bennett.”

“That was true.”

“He said Bennett had something that could destroy me.”

“Did he threaten you?”

“No.”

“What did he do?”

“He reminded me that my brother still owed money.”

I understood.

Thomas didn't need to threaten Patricia directly.

He only needed to remind her who controlled the debt.

“What did you agree to?”

“I agreed to keep you away from Bennett.”

“And changing my seat was part of that?”

“Yes.”

“You knew the captain would stop the aircraft?”

“No.”

She looked genuinely ashamed.

“I didn't know your father had left those instructions.”

Bennett looked at me.

“Your father expected exactly this.”

I looked at him.

“What do you mean?”

“He knew Patricia might be pressured into separating you from the people he trusted.”

“So he arranged the flight.”

“Yes.”

“And the captain?”

“Your father had a standing arrangement with the airline.”

I shook my head.

“He planned all of this.”

“Not everything.”

Bennett looked at Patricia.

“Only the possibility.”

Patricia lowered her head.

Then she said something quietly.

“There's one thing you still don't know.”

I waited.

“My brother wasn't working for Thomas.”

“Who was he working for?”

She looked at me.

“The buyer.”

“Who?”

She hesitated.

Then gave me the name of the investment group.

I knew it.

Everyone in my father's industry knew it.

And the realization was worse than I expected.

Because the group wasn't simply a competitor.

It was the company that had recently offered to acquire one of the businesses I now controlled.

A company Thomas had recommended I negotiate with.

I looked down at the documents.

The same people who had tried to buy my father's company were now trying to buy mine.

The plan had never ended.

It had simply waited.
