2 – The Man Trapped Beneath the Tanker Should Have Waited for Hazmat, But the Storm Was Making Every Second More Dangerous

The tanker moved again.

This time, everyone saw it.

Metal groaned somewhere beneath the cab, followed by a deep scraping sound that seemed to travel through the frozen ground.

I held up one hand.

“Everybody back.”

The responders nearest me moved toward the guardrail.

I stayed where I was.

“Ma'am,” Alvarez shouted, “we need to wait for hazmat.”

“I know.”

“They're forty minutes out.”

I looked toward the cab.

The driver's window was shattered.

A man's face appeared behind it.

He was conscious.

Barely.

His mouth moved.

I couldn't hear him over the wind.

I stepped closer.

“Stay with me!”

He lifted one hand.

The tanker shifted another fraction.

That was enough.

“Get me a cutting tool.”

Alvarez hesitated.

“Ma'am—”

“Now.”

She turned.

The trooper beside me shook his head.

“This thing goes over, we're all dead.”

“I know.”

“Then why are we going in?”

I looked at the trapped driver.

“Because he won't have forty minutes.”

The man was pinned beneath the dashboard.

His name was Walt.

Sixty-three.

A long-haul driver from Colorado.

He told me that much in pieces while we worked.

The snow froze against his eyelashes.

His breathing was shallow.

“My leg,” he whispered.

“I know.”

“Can't feel it.”

“That's okay.”

“No, it isn't.”

“No,” I admitted. “It isn't.”

His eyes closed.

I tapped the side of his helmet.

“Stay awake.”

He opened them.

“What's your name?”

I told him.

He repeated it as if committing it to memory.

Then I asked about his family.

That brought him back.

“Four grandkids,” he said.

“Four?”

He nodded.

“Which one causes the most trouble?”

A faint smile appeared.

“Maisie.”

“Why?”

“She walks now.”

“That dangerous?”

“You don't know the half of it.”

I smiled.

“Where's she going?”

“Everywhere.”

We worked faster.

The dashboard had folded inward.

The left side of the cab was compressed around his leg.

Every movement had to be deliberate.

One mistake could collapse the structure.

Behind us, the bus evacuation continued.

Children were being carried toward waiting ambulances.

Parents shouted names.

A woman kept asking whether her husband had made it out.

Someone answered yes.

Then another person called for a medic.

The entire scene seemed to exist on several different clocks.

One measured the storm.

Another measured the tanker.

Another measured Walt's fading consciousness.

And another measured the amount of time until additional rescue crews could reach us.

None of them were on our side.

“Ready?” I asked.

The responder beside me nodded.

We pulled.

Walt screamed.

Then the dashboard gave.

His boot came free.

“Got him.”

We pulled him through the opening.

For a second, nobody moved.

Then we carried him downhill.

We had gone perhaps fifty yards when the tanker shifted again.

The rear wheels slid.

Metal screamed against ice.

Everyone stopped.

The tanker settled lower.

I looked back at it.

Then at Walt.

He was alive.

That was enough.

We got him to the ambulance.

The medic grabbed my arm.

“He's got a pulse.”

“Good.”

“He needs surgery.”

“I figured.”

“You just saved his life.”

I shook my head.

“The whole team did.”

The medic looked toward the bus.

“Still have people there.”

“Then we're not finished.”

By the time the last passenger was accounted for, nearly midnight had passed.

Thirty-eight people.

Nine transported.

Two seriously injured.

No fatalities.

The little boy I had promised to find his mother was reunited with her.

His mother hugged him so tightly that neither of them noticed me standing nearby.

I turned away.

Some moments don't need an audience.

We returned to base shortly after eleven-thirty.

My uniform was stiff from frozen snow.

My gloves were soaked.

My hands didn't stop trembling until I had been sitting for several minutes.

Alvarez put a cup of coffee beside me.

“It's cold.”

“Everything is cold.”

She smiled.

Then she looked toward the television.

I followed her gaze.

The screen showed footage from the highway.

At first, I barely paid attention.

Then I saw the bus.

The camera angle changed.

There was a responder climbing onto its side.

Snow blew across the frame.

The picture zoomed closer.

I saw a figure in uniform.

Me.

I stopped breathing for a second.

The caption beneath the image read:

ARMY OFFICER LEADS RESCUE DURING COLORADO BLIZZARD.

Alvarez slowly looked at me.

“Well.”

I stared at the screen.

“I didn't know they were filming.”

“Neither did I.”

The anchor began describing the rescue.

The footage showed children being brought out of the overturned bus.

Then it showed the tanker.

Then me and another responder pulling Walt from the cab.

I looked away.

My phone buzzed.

Then buzzed again.

Then again.

I ignored it.

Another message appeared.

Then another.

Alvarez looked at the screen.

“That's your name.”

I picked up my phone.

My cousin had called.

Then someone from high school.

Then someone whose number I didn't recognize.

I put the phone down.

I wasn't interested in becoming a story.

I had done my job.

That was all.

At 12:15, however, the calls changed.

One came from Army public affairs.

Another came from a regional news outlet.

Then a national network.

I listened to none of them.

The duty officer handled the media requests.

I went back to my report.

Every detail mattered.

Every time.

The time the bus was discovered.

The number of passengers.

The weather.

The location.

The tanker.

Walt's condition.

The names of the responders.

I wrote until my eyes burned.

Then I leaned back.

For the first time all night, I thought about home.

Not the Army.

Not the rescue.

Home.

I wondered whether my father had noticed my absence.

Probably not.

He had a full house.

Jason had his promotion.

Erica's parents were there.

The dinner had probably gone exactly as planned.

I wondered what they were eating.

Then I stopped myself.

It didn't matter.

My phone buzzed again.

This time, it was Jason.

I stared at his name.

I didn't answer.

A minute later, another message arrived.

“Are you awake?”

I put the phone face down.

I didn't want to talk to anyone.

Not yet.

What I didn't know was that Jason wasn't calling because he wanted to wish me Merry Christmas.

He was calling because my father had just seen the news.

And at that moment, somewhere hundreds of miles away, my father was standing in his dining room staring at the same footage I had been trying not to watch.

The Christmas dinner had already ended.

The plates had been cleared.

Coffee had been poured.

Someone had turned on the television because the weather was getting worse.

Nobody expected to see me.

Especially not my father.

The first image showed the overturned bus.

Then came the reporter's voice.

“Army personnel assisted state responders tonight after a charter bus carrying thirty-eight passengers overturned during severe winter weather…”

Jason was holding his phone.

Erica was sitting beside him.

My father stood behind his chair.

The screen changed.

A soldier appeared through the snow.

The camera zoomed.

Jason leaned forward.

He recognized me first.

“Dad.”

My father didn't answer.

“Dad, that's her.”

My father's hand tightened around the wineglass he was holding.

The reporter continued.

“Army Major—”

My name followed.

The glass slipped.

It struck the edge of the table.

Then shattered on the floor.

Nobody spoke.

For the first time that evening, the entire room was focused on the daughter who wasn't supposed to be there.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: When My Name
