back.

“I don't need one.”

“That isn't the point.”

“Then what is?”

He opened the folder.

“You weren't the alone.”

“I know.”

“Then you understand why we keep telling you to accept the recognition without pretending you don't deserve it.”

I looked at Alvarez.

She was trying not to smile.

“You agree with him?”

“Yes.”

“Traitor.”

She laughed.

The meeting continued.

The award wasn't immediate.

There were procedures.

Statements.

Verification.

A review.

I didn't care much about the don't have to thank me.”

“I know.”

After we hung up, Jason called.

“Dad told me.”

“Of course he did.”

“You're getting recognized.”

“Apparently.”

“That's incredible.”

“It's paperwork.”

“Everything is paperwork to you.”

“Because paperwork is predictable.”

He laughed.

Then he said:

“I'm proud of weren't trying to win anything.”

“No.”

“You were just trying to keep peace.”

“Yes.”

“And you were willing to lose your own place at the table to do it.”

I looked at my mother's letter.

“Maybe.”

“I don't want you doing that anymore.”

I smiled.

“Neither do I.”

The award ceremony was held in spring.

My father came.

Jason came with Erica.

Walt couldn't travel, but he sent a video.

Maisie appeared briefly in the background holding a purple crayon.

The ceremony itself was simple.

No grand speeches.

No dramatic music.

Just names, citations, handshakes, and photographs.

When my name was called, I walked forward.

The citation mentioned the bus.

The tanker.

The civilians.

The storm.

It described my actions accurately.

It did not describe me as extraordinary.

That was fine.

When I returned to my seat, my father was standing.

He was clapping.

Jason was too.

For a second, I thought about the previous Christmas.

About what my father had feared.

That my career would overshadow Jason.

Now Jason was the person standing beside him.

Neither of us needed to be smaller.

Afterward, we took photographs.

My father asked if I wanted one with him.

“Yes.”

He stood beside me.

The photographer raised the camera.

My father put a hand on my shoulder.

I felt him hesitate.

Then he squeezed gently.

The photograph was taken.

That evening, we went to dinner.

Jason raised his glass.

“To my sister.”

I shook my head.

“No speeches.”

He laughed.

“Fine.
