on.”

She nodded.

Then Daniel and I walked away.

That evening, I returned home.

The studio was still there.

The crib remained in the middle of the room because the police had not yet released every item as evidence.

I stood in the doorway.

Three years of work had gone into this place.

They had nearly transformed it into something else in a single night.

I walked to my drafting table.

On the surface was a small sheet of paper.

I recognized the handwriting immediately.

Ethan.

He had written a list.

Crib.

Mattress.

Mini fridge.

Curtains.

Key.

The final word had been underlined twice.

Key.

I picked up the paper.

Then I noticed something beneath it.

A second note.

Move before Monday.

I looked at the calendar.

Sunday.

Tomorrow.

They had planned to establish themselves before I could stop them.

I folded the paper and placed it inside the evidence folder.

Then I locked the studio door.

For the first time since Thanksgiving began, I had no idea what my family would do next.

But I knew one thing.

They had spent weeks preparing to make my “no” irrelevant.

Now they would have to live with the consequences of hearing it anyway.

<a
