No coffee brewing in the kitchen. No television murmuring from the living room. No one asking whether I wanted breakfast.

For the first time since I had bought the house, I could hear the refrigerator cycling on and off.

I stood at the kitchen window with a mug between both hands and watched pale sunlight move across the driveway. The studio sat at the far end, its windows reflecting the sky. From this distance, it looked normal.

I knew better.

The night before, I had locked the door after returning from court. Daniel had warned me not to enter again until the police released the remaining evidence.

So I waited.

At 8:17, my phone rang.

It was the investigator handling the forged agreement.

He asked whether I could come down to the station.

I agreed.

Before leaving, I photographed the house from every angle.
