emptied slowly.

Dad was the first to leave after Daniel.

He didn't say goodbye.

He didn't even look at me.

Chloe followed him, pulling Mark by the sleeve.

Mom stayed.

She sat with both hands folded in front of her, staring at the empty chair where Daniel had been.

For several minutes, neither of us spoke.

Rain tapped against the windows.

The sound was almost identical to the rain outside Bellamy House five days earlier.

Only the room had changed.

Or perhaps I had.

Mom finally looked up.

“Do you remember when you were eight?”

I didn't answer.

“You broke the blue vase in the hallway.”

“I remember.”

“Your father was furious.”

“He blamed Daniel.”

Mom gave a small, tired smile.

“Daniel had broken it.”

“I know.”

“But you were standing beside it.”

“I know.”

She looked down.

“You took the blame.”

I watched her.

She seemed surprised that I remembered.

“I thought you did that because you loved him.”

“I did.”

“You always did.”

I waited.

She swallowed.

“I didn't realize what it was costing you.”

I looked at the rain.

“Neither did I.”

That was the closest thing to an apology she had ever given me.

It wasn't enough.

But I didn't need it to finish what I had started.

“The audit will continue,” I said.

Her face tightened.

“Do you really have to do that?”

“Yes.”

“Even now?”

“Especially now.”

She closed her eyes.

“What will happen to us?”

“I don't know.”

“Can't you protect us?”

“I've spent years protecting you.”

Her eyes opened.

“That isn't fair.”

“No.”

I looked at her.

“It isn't.”

She stared at me.

Then she whispered, “I never meant for that toast to hurt you so badly.”

“You meant it to hurt me.”

She didn't deny it.

“You wanted everyone to laugh.”

“I thought you deserved to be humbled.”

“Why?”

“Because you were always acting as though you were better than us.”

I shook my head.

“I wasn't acting.”

She flinched.

The words hung between us.

I didn't raise my voice.

I didn't need to.

Mom slowly stood.

“I should go.”

“Yes.”

She reached the door.

Then stopped.

“Rachel.”

I looked up.

“What?”

“Your grandfather would have been proud.”

I almost laughed.

“He was the reason I knew I could survive this.”

She nodded.

Then she left.

I remained alone in the boardroom.

The independent director was still gathering his papers.

“You handled that well,” he said.

“I don't know what that means.”

“It means you didn't let the meeting become personal.”

“It already was personal.”

“Yes.”

He closed his folder.

“But you didn't let that determine the decisions.”

After he left, I returned to my office.

The company's forensic accountants had begun their review that afternoon.

They asked for access to archived records.

I gave it to them.

They asked for copies of old invoices.

I gave them those too.

Then they found something I hadn't expected.

A payment sequence connected to one of Dad's property companies.

The first transfer was small.

The second was larger.

The third was routed through another account.

The fourth disappeared into a holding company.

The accountant called me into the conference room.

He placed four pages on the table.

“We found another chain.”

I studied the records.

“How much?”

He hesitated.

“More than the preliminary number.”

“How much more?”

“Three hundred eighty thousand.”

I looked up.

“Connected to whom?”

He pointed to the final company name.

My father's property venture.

I leaned back.

“Does Daniel know?”

“We don't know.”

“Does my mother?”

“We don't know yet.”

I looked at the dates.

The earliest transfer had happened eighteen months before Grandpa died.

That changed something.

Until then, I had believed the financial abuse had grown under Daniel's leadership.

Now I wasn't sure.

The accountant pointed to another line.

“There is one more thing.”

He handed me a photocopy.

It was an email.

The sender was Dad.

The recipient was Mom.

The message contained only one sentence.

Make sure Rachel never sees the original agreement.

I stared at it.

My pulse quickened.

“What agreement?”

“We don't know.”

“Where did you find this?”

“In an archived legal folder.”

“Why wasn't it in the preliminary review?”

“It had been misclassified.”

I read the sentence again.

Make sure Rachel never sees the original agreement.

For years, I had believed Grandpa's voting trust was the entire secret.

Now I wondered whether it was only one piece.

I called the trust attorney.

She answered on the second ring.

“What happened?”

“I found an email.”

“From whom?”

“My father.”

“To your mother.”

“What does it say?”

I read it aloud.

There was silence on the other end.

Then she asked, “What date?”

I gave it to her.

Another pause.

“That was before the trust was finalized.”

“What agreement was he referring to?”

“I don't know.”

“But you know something.”

“I know there were several drafts.”

“Did Grandpa change the structure?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I can't discuss privileged communications without reviewing the file.”

“Then review it.”

“I will.”

I hung up.

For the first time since Mother's Day, I felt something I hadn't felt before.

Not anger.

Not satisfaction.

Concern.

The family had spent years telling me I was the problem.

Now I was beginning to wonder whether they had known exactly what Grandpa intended and had been trying to keep me away from it.

The next morning, Daniel called.

I almost didn't answer.

Then I did.

“What?”

His breathing was heavy.

“You need to stop the audit.”

“No.”

“Rachel.”

“No.”

“You don't understand what you're uncovering.”

I stood beside the window.

“What do I not understand?”

Silence.

“Daniel?”

“You think Dad and Mom were protecting the company.”

“Were they?”

“They were protecting themselves.”

That answer surprised me.

“From what?”

“I can't talk about this over the phone.”

“Then come to my office.”

“I can't.”

“Why?”

Another silence.

Then he said, “Because Dad doesn't know I found the file.”

“What file?”

He hung up.

I stared at the phone.

A minute later, another message arrived.

Don't trust anyone in the family until you see what Grandpa left behind.

I read it twice.

Then I forwarded it to the trust attorney.

Five minutes later, she called.

“Rachel, I need you to come to my office.”

“Why?”

“Because I found the original agreement.”

My stomach tightened.

“The voting trust?”

“No.”

She paused.

“Something older.”

I grabbed my coat.

“What is it?”

“I think your grandfather anticipated exactly what would happen after his death.”

I walked out of my office.

Behind me, the company's doors were closing for the evening.

Ahead of me was an agreement my family had spent years hiding.

And for the first time, I understood that taking control of Carter Home Systems might not have been Grandpa's final decision.

It might have been his first move.

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: The
