to access the account.

“Why?”

Elaine's voice was quiet.

“Because she believed the company was in danger.”

“From what?”

“Your grandfather's estate.”

That made no sense.

“What danger?”

Elaine looked directly at me.

“Your grandfather this?”

Elaine pointed to the signature.

Dad.

The agreement had never closed.

Because Grandpa intervened.

“He tried to sell the company?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To pay the property debts.”

Daniel stood.

“That's why Grandpa created Northstar.”

Elaine nodded.

“He was trying to prevent the sale.”

“And Dad knew.”

“Yes.”

“And Mom knew.”

“Yes.”

“And I knew nothing.”

Elaine looked at me.

“Your grandfather wanted it that way.”

“Why?”

“Because he didn't want you dragged into the conflict.”

I laughed once.

It wasn't funny.

“He protected me by leaving me blind.”

“He believed you would eventually need to know.”

“When?”

“After you were strong enough to act without needing anyone's approval.”

I looked at the documents.

That sounded exactly like him.

Daniel sat again.

“What about me?”

Elaine looked at him.

“Your grandfather believed you could still change.”

Daniel's eyes filled.

He looked away.

I didn't know what to say.

For years, I had thought Grandpa's trust in Daniel meant he didn't trust me.

Now I understood.

He had trusted us differently.

Daniel had been given a chance.

I had been given responsibility.

Neither of us had understood.

I gathered the documents.

“We need to find the missing Northstar records.”

Elaine nodded.

“There is one location we haven't searched.”

“Where?”

“Your grandfather's old office.”

The office had been closed since his death.

My father had the keys.

I looked at Daniel.

“Can you get them?”

He nodded.

That evening, we went to the old factory.

The building looked smaller than I remembered.

The front office smelled of dust, paper, and machine oil.

Grandpa's office was at the end of the hallway.

Daniel unlocked the door.

We stepped inside.

Everything was almost untouched.

His desk.

His old chair.

The brass clock.

The framed photograph of the factory in its first year.

I walked toward the desk.

There was a locked drawer.

Daniel tried three keys.

None worked.

I remembered something.

Grandpa used to keep a spare key inside the base of his desk lamp.

I unscrewed the bottom.

The key was still there.

The drawer opened.

Inside was a single envelope.

My name was written on it.

I opened it.

There was no long letter.

Only one sentence.

If Northstar has been touched, look where the family keeps its secrets.

Daniel looked over my shoulder.

“What does that mean?”

I turned the page.

On the back was an address.

Our family lake house.

I looked at him.

He looked at me.

Neither of us spoke.

Because that house had been empty for years.

And suddenly, we both understood.

Whatever Grandpa had hidden there, he had expected someone to find it eventually.
