was organized.

Systematic.

Almost professional.

Each incident had a number.

Each number had a description.

Some contained photographs.

Others included screenshots of messages I had sent Brendan while frightened or confused.

There were even recordings.

My own voice came through one of them, trembling as I apologized for supposedly ruining his evening.

Someone had added a laughing emoji beside the file.

I covered my mouth.

Revenge fourteen.

Make Chloe believe Brendan forgot her donation.

Below it was a message from Brendan.

She'll do anything if she believes I'm in danger.

My hands went numb.

I dropped the phone onto the bed.

Then I ran to the bathroom.

I barely reached the sink before I vomited.

Mom found me there.

She didn't ask what I had seen.

She simply pulled my hair away from my face and knelt beside me.

When I finally sat on the bathroom floor, I couldn't stop shaking.

“Three years,” I whispered.

Mom wrapped an arm around my shoulders.

“I know.”

“How could I not know?”

She looked at me for a long moment.

“Because you were trying to make the relationship work.”

I cried harder.

“I thought he loved me.”

“I know.”

“I kept making excuses for him.”

“You wanted the good moments to be real.”

Her words hurt because they were true.

The next week, we moved to Tucson.

The change of scenery didn't erase anything.

I still woke some mornings thinking I had forgotten to answer Brendan's messages.

Sometimes I caught myself wanting to tell him something funny.

Then I remembered.

There was nobody to tell.

I started working part-time at a bakery downtown.

It was simple work.

Early mornings.

Warm bread.

Flour on my sleeves.

Customers who complained about coffee temperatures instead of my personality.

I liked it.

Nobody there knew who Brendan was.

Nobody cared about Scarlett.

Nobody had an opinion about the championship.

For the first time in years, I was simply Chloe.

One afternoon, I passed a small dance studio.

Music came through the glass.

My feet stopped.

I stood outside for several minutes watching the dancers move across the wooden floor.

The instructor noticed me.

She opened the door.

“You used to dance?”

I nodded.

“Then come inside.”

“I haven't danced seriously in years.”

“That doesn't mean you can't start again.”

I almost refused.

Instead, I walked through the door.

The first class was awful.

My balance was poor.

My muscles were stiff.

I missed counts.

I hated the mirrors.

But I returned the following week.

Then the week after.

Slowly, the body I had neglected began remembering what my mind had tried to forget.

Dance stopped being connected to Brendan.

It became mine again.

Six months after leaving California, I performed a short solo at a community theater.

Dad sat near the aisle with his phone raised too high.

Mom cried before I had even finished the first minute.

Afterward, another dancer posted a short recording online.

I didn't think much of it.

Then an independent dance company in Phoenix contacted me.

They wanted me to audition.

My first reaction was fear.

My second was an old familiar thought.

You aren't good enough.

I recognized the voice immediately.

It wasn't mine.

I went to the audition anyway.

I didn't get everything right.

But I got through it.

They offered me a place in their upcoming season.

For the first time, something good happened without Brendan being part of it.

Meanwhile, the world he had built around himself began collapsing.

Scarlett stopped defending him.

Liam eventually released portions of the revenge archive after a bitter argument with Brendan.

Friends who had once laughed beside him suddenly claimed they had never been involved.

The fake blood incident became especially difficult to explain.

Even Mason began distancing himself.

Brendan lost the approval he had valued more than my feelings.

I didn't celebrate.

I didn't need to.

Consequences didn't belong to me.

A year after I left, my university invited me to speak at a seminar about personal boundaries and rebuilding confidence.

I almost declined.

Returning to California frightened me.

But I accepted.

The auditorium was nearly full.

I stood behind the podium and looked at the audience.

I didn't mention Brendan.

I didn't mention Scarlett.

I didn't tell the story of the hospital.

I spoke about what happens when someone repeatedly teaches you to distrust your own instincts.

“Love shouldn't require you to disappear,” I said.

The room became very quiet.

I continued.

“If someone makes you smaller so they can feel larger, the problem isn't that you're failing to love them correctly.”

Applause came after I finished.

I stepped away from the podium.

That's when I saw him.

Brendan stood near the back wall.

Alone.

He waited until most of the audience had left.

Then he approached.

“Chloe.”

I turned.

“Brendan.”

He looked different.

Thinner.

Tired.

Less certain of himself.

“You look well,” he said.

“I am.”

“I listened to your speech.”

“I noticed.”

He lowered his eyes.

“I was cruel.”

I waited.

“Not just once,” he continued. “I know that now.”

“You knew then.”

He flinched.

“I didn't understand what I was doing.”

“You understood enough to document it.”

His face tightened.

“I deserved that.”

“No,” I said. “You deserved consequences. That's different.”

He looked at me.

“I lost almost everyone.”

I said nothing.

“My father stopped supporting me. Liam won't speak to me.
