don't expect you to come back.”

“That would be impossible.”

“I understand.”

“Do you?”

He looked at me.

“I think I do now.”

I almost smiled.

Not because anything was funny.

Because the man standing in front of me had spent years believing he understood everything about me.

Now he finally understood one thing.

I was leaving.

“I lost my friends,” he said quietly.

“That isn't my lost the version of me who kept trying to earn your kindness.”

His expression changed.

“You really don't love me anymore?”

The question would once have destroyed me.

Now it simply sounded like a question from someone who had arrived too late.

“I don't know what love means when I look back at those three years.”

He nodded.

“Can you forgive me?”

I thought about my mother holding my hair while I was sick on the bathroom floor.

I thought about the bruise on my arm.

I thought about the silver shoes hidden in a box.

I thought about every night I had wondered whether I was too sensitive.

Then I remembered the dance studio in Tucson.

The wooden floor.

The music.

The first time I completed an entire routine without thinking about him.

“I don't know whether forgiveness is necessary,” I said.

He looked disappointed.

“I thought you'd say you hated me.”

“I did hate you.”

His eyes lifted.

“For a while.”

“What changed?”

“I realized hatred still gave you space in my life.”

He said nothing.

“I don't need to carry you around anymore.”

A tear slipped down his cheek.

He wiped it away quickly.

“Are you happy?”

The question surprised me.

I looked toward the auditorium.

At the rows of empty chairs.

At the stage where I had just stood.

“I am learning how to be.”

“Without me?”

“Yes.”

He nodded slowly.

“I suppose that's what I deserve.”

I didn't correct him.

He took one step backward.

“Chloe?”

“Yes?”

“If I could change one thing—”

“You can't.”

“I know.”

He looked down.

“I really am sorry.”

This time, I believed that he was sorry.

But being sorry didn't erase anything.

It didn't return my graduation.

It didn't restore three years.

It didn't give me back the confidence I had lost.

And it didn't create an obligation for me to forgive him.

“I hope you become someone who never does this to another person,” I said.

“I will.”

“Then that's enough.”

I picked up my bag.

As I walked toward the exit, he called my name.

“Were you ever happy with me?”

I stopped.

The honest answer was complicated.

There had been happy moments.

Real laughter.

Quiet mornings.

Long drives.

There had been pieces of a relationship that I had genuinely loved.

But I had mistaken those moments for proof that everything else was acceptable.

“Yes,” I said.

He seemed surprised.

“I was happy sometimes.”

He waited.

“But happiness isn't a reason to stay somewhere that destroys you.”

Then I walked away.

Outside, the evening air was warm.

I called Mom before I reached the parking lot.

“How did it go?” she asked.

“I saw him.”

“Are you okay?”

I smiled.

“I think I am.”

“You sound different.”

“I feel different.”

Dad's voice came from somewhere in the background.

“Tell her we're proud of her.”

Mom laughed softly.

“He says he's proud of you.”

I looked at the pavement beneath my feet.

“Tell him I love him.”

After the call ended, I drove to a nearby sporting store.

I walked past the shelves slowly.

Then I saw them.

A pair of black dance shoes.

Simple.

New.

Untouched by any memory.

I bought them.

Back at the hotel, I opened the old revenge archive one last time.

I had kept a copy because I needed proof that I hadn't imagined what happened.

I scrolled through the numbered entries.

Fourteen.

Thirty-one.

Forty-seven.

Eighty-one.

Ninety-six.

I stopped there.

The next entries had never happened.

The ninety-ninth act had never been performed.

The planned public humiliation never took place.

Brendan had believed he was three steps away from completing his revenge.

He had been wrong.

His revenge ended the moment I learned the truth.

Not because I defeated him.

Because I stopped participating.

I transferred the archive to an external drive and placed it somewhere safe.

Then I deleted it from my phone.

The screen went blank.

For a few seconds, I stared at my reflection in it.

I looked older than I had three years earlier.

Not ruined.

Changed.

There was a difference.

The next morning, I returned to Tucson.

I went directly to the dance studio.

The instructor looked at my new shoes.

“Those are nice.”

I smiled.

“They're mine.”

She understood without asking.

Music started.

I stepped onto the floor.

For years, I had thought winning that championship was the moment that changed my life.

It wasn't.

The real turning point came much later, in a hospital corridor, with a bruise on my arm and my blood discarded in a medical bin.

That was when I finally saw the difference between sacrificing for someone and sacrificing myself.

Brendan had spent years convincing me that love meant proving how much I could endure.

I finally understood that love without respect was not something I needed to endure at all.

The music began.

I moved.

No audience.

No trophy.

No competition.

No one keeping score.

Just the floor beneath my feet and the sound of my own breathing.

For the first time, I wasn't dancing to win anything.

I was dancing because I wanted to.

And that was something Brendan could never take from me.

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: The New Life I Had Built Began to Feel Real Until
