It was whether she had remembered the steaks.

I was standing beside her bed with a paper cup of untouched coffee in one hand and her wet coat draped over the other arm. A monitor beside her gave a steady electronic rhythm. Every few seconds, the oxygen tubing shifted against her cheek as she breathed.

“Did she get them?” Daniel asked.

For a moment, I honestly thought I had misunderstood him.

“What?”

“The steaks,” he repeated. I could hear dishes clinking somewhere behind him, followed by a burst of laughter. “The ones I asked her to pick up. Did she remember them?”

I stared at my mother.

She was sixty-eight years old, recovering from pneumonia, and had been so weak that three days earlier she had needed my arm just to walk from the bedroom to the bathroom. Now she was unconscious beneath a hospital blanket because she had collapsed in the snow while carrying a grocery bag home for my husband.

“She could have died,” I said.

Daniel exhaled as though I were being difficult.

“She volunteered to go.”

Outside the emergency department windows, snow was still coming down in thick, wind-driven sheets. The storm had turned the parking lot into a white blur. I could barely see the cars through the glass.

“She was sick.”

“She said she was fine.”

“She wasn’t.”

There was a pause.

Then Daniel lowered his voice.

“Please don’t start this tonight. Marcus is here. I have a dinner meeting I’ve been preparing for all week.”

I looked down at the dark mark around my mother’s wrist. The grocery bag had cut into her skin before the handle froze against her glove.

“What happened to her wasn’t an inconvenience, Daniel.”

“I didn’t say it was.”

“You asked about the steaks before you asked if she was breathing.”

His silence lasted just long enough to tell me he knew I was right.

Then he said, “Are you coming home?”

I almost laughed.

“My mother is in the emergency room.”

“And the dinner still needs to happen.”

That was Daniel. Even then, even with my mother’s life hanging in the balance, he was thinking about the evening he had planned.

For two years, I had found explanations for him.

If he left his dirty dishes outside Mom’s room, I told myself he was busy. If he woke her early because he wanted his shirts ironed, I convinced myself he hadn’t realized how sick she was. When he complained that her coughing interrupted his television programs, I told myself he was stressed from work.

My mother had always made excuses for him too.

“He works hard,” she would say.

“He’s under pressure.”

“Don’t make trouble between the two of you because of me.”

She had been afraid of becoming the reason my marriage failed.

That fear had made her quiet.

Too quiet.

The nurse came over and handed me a folded plastic bag.

“These were with her when she arrived.”

I opened it.

Inside were Mom’s scarf, one glove, a receipt, and her phone.

Her phone.

I stared at it.

Daniel had told me earlier that evening that Mom had forgotten hers at home because she was “too scattered” lately.

But there it was.

I picked it up and noticed the screen was dark.

“When did she lose consciousness?” I asked the nurse.

“Paramedics found her outside the apartment complex. A neighbor called it in. She was lying partly on the sidewalk, partly in the snowbank.”

My stomach tightened.

“Was she conscious when they found her?”

“Barely.”

The nurse glanced toward my mother.

“She kept asking about the groceries.”

Of course she had.

Even while collapsing, she had been worried about coming home without everything Daniel had demanded.

I looked at the receipt.

The ink had blurred where the paper had gotten wet. I could still make out the expensive steaks, vegetables, bread, and several other items.

She had bought everything.

Every single thing.

Including the steaks.

I took out my phone and called Daniel again.

He answered immediately.

“She got them,” I said.

“Good.”

One word.

Good.

I closed my eyes.

“Daniel, I’m staying here.”

“You can’t leave me hanging like this.”

“I am not leaving my mother.”

“She’ll be fine.”

I looked at her pale face.

“You don’t know that.”

He lowered his voice.

“Don’t embarrass me in front of Marcus.”

That sentence stayed with me.

Not because it was cruel.

Because it was ordinary.

He said it the way someone might remind a spouse to bring a coat.

I ended the call.

When I turned back toward Mom, her eyes were open.

They were unfocused at first.

Then she recognized me.

“Sweetheart?”

I leaned over immediately.

“I’m here.”

Her lips moved beneath the oxygen tube.

“I’m sorry.”

I brushed damp hair away from her forehead.

“For what?”

“The dinner.”

I felt something inside me crack.

“You don’t need to apologize.”

“He wanted the steaks.”

“I know.”

“I tried to get home before they got cold.”

“You shouldn’t have gone at all.”

She closed her eyes.

“He took my phone.”

I stopped.

“What?”

Mom swallowed painfully.

“Before I left.”

The nurse glanced at me.

I lowered my voice.

“Why?”

“He said I wouldn’t need it.”

I remembered Daniel telling me she was becoming forgetful.

He had said she spent too much time staring at her phone.

He had said it was for her own safety.

Now the pieces were beginning to fit.

“Did you want to go?” I asked.

Mom shook her head.

“He said I could earn my room.”

My throat tightened.

“Mom.”

She looked ashamed.

“I didn’t want him angry with you.”

For a few seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then she whispered, “I thought if I kept him happy, you could keep your marriage.”

I took her hand.

“You don’t owe him my marriage.”

Her fingers trembled against mine.

“You’re my mother.”

She squeezed my hand.

“I know.”

I stayed beside her until she drifted into a restless sleep.

At nearly midnight, my phone buzzed.

A message from Daniel.

Marcus is investing tomorrow.
