head.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because if Victor sees me with you, he'll know I betrayed him.”

“You already did.”

She looked at him.

“Not enough.”

A figure appeared between the trees.

Tall.

Dark coat.

Gray hair.

He walked slowly toward us.

Richard whispered, “Victor.”

The man stopped twenty yards away.

He looked older than the photographs, but there was no mistaking him.

Victor Hale.

Alive.

Calm.

And completely unsurprised.

“You've made this unnecessarily difficult,” he said.

Daniel stepped forward.

“What do you want?”

Victor smiled.

“Not you.”

His eyes moved to me.

“Claire.”

I felt Miriam move beside me.

“What do you want from her?”

“The ledger.”

“We have it.”

“I know.”

Victor's gaze moved to the building.

“The missing page is more important.”

I held his stare.

“You already have it.”

“Yes.”

“Then why are you here?”

“Because the page is encrypted.”

Richard's face changed.

“You never knew.”

Victor looked at him.

“Richard.”

“You thought the ledger was enough.”

“It was.”

“Then why are you afraid?”

Victor's smile disappeared.

“Because Claire has the one thing I could never find.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“The key.”

I thought about the old documents.

The fourteen companies.

The ownership structure.

The missing account.

Then I understood.

The ledger didn't identify the final account.

It identified a sequence.

The key was something my father had left separately.

I looked at Richard.

He was staring at me.

“You know,” he whispered.

I reached into my coat.

The small brass key from my father's study was still there.

Victor's expression changed.

For the first time, he looked genuinely alarmed.

“Give it to me.”

“No.”

He took one step forward.

Daniel stepped between us.

Victor looked at him.

“You have no idea what that key opens.”

Daniel said, “Neither do you.”

Victor smiled.

“You've finally learned to ask questions.”

Then a siren sounded in the distance.

Victor looked toward the road.

Miriam had already called the authorities.

Victor stepped backward.

“You think this ends here?”

“No,” I said.

He looked at me.

“It begins here.”

He turned and disappeared among the trees.

Vanessa sank onto a snow-covered bench.

Daniel stood motionless.

Richard exhaled.

“He'll come back.”

“I know.”

Miriam looked at me.

“What does the key open?”

I looked at the lake house.

“My father's study.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“Not the study.”

I remembered something.

A sentence from my father's letter.

I separated these assets because I believed the partnership had become dangerous.

But there had been another line.

One I hadn't understood at the time.

The safest place for something valuable is often the place everyone assumes is empty.

I looked toward the frozen lake.

“There is another building.”

Daniel frowned.

“What building?”

“The boathouse.”

We walked there before sunrise.

The old structure stood half-buried in snow.

Inside, the walls were bare.

No furniture.

No boats.

Nothing.

Except an old wooden floor.

I knelt.

One board had a different color.

Daniel brought a crowbar.

We lifted it.

Beneath the floor was a metal box.

The brass key fit perfectly.

Inside was a single envelope.

My name was written across it.

Claire Whitmore.

My father's handwriting.

I opened it.

There was no money.

No ledger.

Only a letter and a small drive.

The letter contained six words that changed everything.

Trust Daniel when he finally tells you.

I looked at him.

He stared at me.

“What did it say?”

I handed him the letter.

He read it.

Then he began to cry.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

He simply lowered his head and covered his face.

For the first time since I'd known him, Daniel wasn't trying to control how anyone saw him.

He was finally seeing himself.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: My Father’s Final Letter Explained Why Daniel Had
